Jeff Lynne: George said to me, ‘We should have a group, me and you.’ I said, ‘Great, who would we have in it?’ He said, ‘Well, I’ll have Bob Dylan.’ I said, ‘Can we have Roy Orbison?’ We thought Tom Petty would be a great member of the group too; luckily so did Tom.

UNSEEN DESIGN Back in 1988, The Traveling Wilburys supergroup (Tom Petty, Bob Dylan, Roy Orbison, George Harrison, and Jeff Lynne) actually thought about touring to support their first album. Production/lighting designer Jim Lenahan (Petty's longtime designer) was enlisted for the job. For inspiration, he turned to the album's art. "It had all these weird, Monty Python-esque pictures on the back, and Eric Idle did the liner notes," he says. "So I envisioned some kind of Terry Gilliamesque vehicle as the set. The sails were going to be projection surfaces, and the wing was a thrust that we could go out on. The wheel house was the monitor mix position, and there would be smoke coming out of the smokestack and the wheels on the train would turn. But it was a really conceptual sketch, and we never got as far as the nuts and bolts of how we would actually do it." When the band finally made a firm commitment--not to tour, as it turned out--Lenahan approached Petty about using the idea for his upcoming tour. "He said, 'Sure, draw it up. Maybe we can use it.' So I did and he loved it, and he said, `Hang on to it; when it comes time to go out, we'll look into building it.' "Well, a few months went by, and I went back to it, and every time I'd look at it and think, 'This is the Traveling Wilburys. This is not Tom Petty,'" Lenahan continues. "I finally went back to Petty and told him I just didn't think it was a Tom Petty-looking set. He said, 'Okay. Well, what else you got?' And I said, 'What do you think about a big tree?' That's how we ended up doing the big inflatable treehouse for the 1991-92 Into the Great Wide Open tour. Now that Roy Orbison has died, I don't think there's any chance the Traveling Wilburys will ever tour. But it was a fun idea." ~~~~~~~~ By Catherine McHugh

HARRISON DREAMED OF WILBURYS SHIP TOUR
Late rocker GEORGE HARRISON once dreamed up a high seas adventure for supergroup the TRAVELING WILBURYS - but it was too much of a risk to get TOM PETTY, BOB DYLAN, ROY ORBISON and the former BEATLES star himself on a boat. Harrison shared his sailing tour idea with Petty, explaining the End of the Line hitmakers would dock in coves and perform for anyone who could row out for the show. Petty recalls, "He said, 'We should get a ship, just sail around. We could pull into a cove and play to guys in outrigger canoes. And we'll call it the Sponsor Ship. We'll paint a different corporate logo on it every day. That'll pay for the trip.' He was so funny." But the Free Fallin' singer admits it might have been the only way Harrison would have agreed to tour. He tells Rolling Stone magazine, "His biggest problem was the machinery of managers and booking agents. "He said to me once, 'I can't face waking up in Philadelphia and having to go to the soundcheck

This may be the first true supergroup since the Traveling Wilburys – George Harrison, Jeff Lynne, Roy Orbison, Tom Petty and Bob Dylan – formed in the late 80s. Don’t believe me? Well, just take a look at the superstar lineup that ‘Atoms For Peace’ flaunts: Thom Yorke, Joey Waronker (REM), Mauro Refosco (Forro in the Dark), Flea (Red Hot Chili Peppers) and Nigel Godrich (Radiohead producer)…I bet you believe me now, don’t you?
Flying Lotus.
Между тем, как сообщает New Musical Express, Том Йорк дал 25 февраля сольный концерт в Кембридже без своих коллег по Atoms For Peace, исполнив три абсолютно новые песни - "The Daily Mail", "Give Up The Ghost" и "Mouse Dog Bird".

Web Exclusive Interview Jim Keltner
Jim Keltner needs no introduction to Modern Drummer readers. Jim has played with just about everyone in music royalty, and it's no mystery why: Everyone wants Jim's feel-good vibe on their recordings. And if you ever met the man, you would know instantly that it's not only great playing he brings to the session, it's his warm and giving personality. You just want to hang with Jim.
by Billy Amendola
Recently we spoke with Jim about the new George Harrison studio album, Brainwashed, as well as the Harrison tribute concert at London's Royal Albert Hall that took place November 29, 2002, a bitter-sweet affair held on the one-year anniversary of George's passing. Jim played and was friends with both George Harrison and John Lennon for many years, so we started our chat on that subject. MD: One of the questions I asked Ringo for Quick Beats was: Who was a better drummer, George or John? And Ringo said "George." Would you agree with that? Jim: [laughs] Good question?. Well, I would have to say yes, because, first of all, John never played the drums in front of me. But George did, and he could play very well. He had such beautiful time. When George played drums he had all the basic language. He knew what to do with his feet and the hands. He cracked me up a few times at the drums. I have a beautiful picture of him behind my set at the house. MD: I saw a film clip of George-which featured you as well-where he was talking about the making of this new record. It brought tears to my eyes as I was watching it. Jim: I know exactly what you mean. MD: It's so nice to hear this new music. His singing and playing is so strong. Jim: That's the thing. He gave it his best shot. He knew he was leaving, he knew he was getting out of here. I had a hard time believing that. But I think he was so prepared, and everything just fell into place the way he wanted it. MD: I know you had a great friendship with George besides just playing music. Jim: Oh, God. He was an inspiration for so many things in my life and my family's life. He was an extraordinary guy. He wasn't like most of your friends. I know it sounds trite, like, "Well, he was a Beatle, so of course he was an extraordinary guy." But it's so much more than that. He had such a down-to-earth quality. He was funny and bright, and loved to share stuff. He was a real people person. He genuinely liked people. And yet, he had a tremendous bullshit meter. He could see through you from a long distance. I saw him do that all the time. My family and I feel very fortunate that we came into his life at such an early time. MD: I guess at that level you get afraid because you don't know what people really want from you. Jim: Exactly. It's the same thing with Charlie [Watts] and The Stones, or any of my other friends with such high profiles. We go so far back, I'm sure that's why our friendships are real solid. We treasure those relationships. MD: George's son Dhani did a very nice job co-producing Brainwashed with Jeff Lynne. He looks so much like his dad too. Jim: And it's not just the looks either. His mannerisms and how he moves his mouth, is just like George. Or he'll say something and he'll back his head off just like George. He'll give you a look, a glance, just like his dad. It messes me up. MD: Let's talk about Brainwashed. Jim: "Any Road" is one of my favorites. Pure George. He use to quote that line all the time, "If You don't Know Where You're Going, Any Road Will Take You There." I love that song so much. The other one that makes me cry every time I hear it, and probably always will, is "Stuck Inside A Cloud." That's one of his older one's that he used to play for me all the time. It had a magical, misty, very English sort of quality to it. We would be sitting in the studio late at night before shutting everything down, and I'd say, "Hey, George, play 'Cloud' for me," and he would put it on and sing along with it. It didn't have drums on it for many years, just these cheesy little keyboard samples from his E2 sampler, but for some reason it just takes me right to Friar Park every time I hear it. MD: Were all your drum tracks completely finished before he passed away? Jim: Yes. I didn't do any more after?. When he called me to come do the drums, it was before the stabbing, and I believe after his throat operation. I never took gear to his place because years ago I had DW send him a real nice drumset with all the hardware and everything, and then Paiste sent a bunch of cymbals and stuff. So he pretty much had everything I - or anybody - would need. So when I would go to his studio at Friar Park later on, I would hardly ever take anything with me, maybe just a certain cymbal and a snare - little things. Now, George had this tremendous living room, which was like three stories high, with a balcony overlooking it. My bedroom was on the third floor - "the loft," they used to call it. It was a beautiful place with a kitchen and den and everything. I used to come down in the morning and stand on this part of the balcony that extends out over the room a little bit. A few times over the years I'd snap my fingers to hear the sound, and I'd say to George, "It would be great to have the drums here," and he'd just laugh, because he had a major studio built in another part of the house; why would he want to put drums there? But when I arrived for this recording, I walked in and the drums were set up right in that space. I was so knocked out. He did that for me. I guess he asked the engineer John Etchells whether the sound would be controllable. So he went out and tested a few things and said, "It would be great." I remember they had a whole bunch of 87's [mic's] out over the room to get the room sound. And I ended up using George's drumset. I didn't even use any of my snares. MD: How about cymbals? JK: I might have used one of my cymbals. The hi-hats were a pair of Arbiters that said "602" on them. So they were early Paistes before they put their company name on their cymbals. They were given to Ringo, and he gave them to George. Ringo always played a beautiful Paiste 602 crash-ride, and his hi-hats are 14" Zildjians that are so old you can barely see any logo. He preferred those, so he left the Arbiter Paiste hats with George. George had them in his studio for years. I used those hi-hats on everything I ever played with George?Cloud Nine - everything. MD: The Traveling Wilburys albums too? Jim: No, both Wilburys recordings were done in California, so it was all my gear. Anyway, on the last day of the sessions for Brainwashed, as I was packing up, I was putting the cymbals back in the box like I'd done for so many years, and I said, "George I'm going to take these hi-hats with me." He said, "Why are you taking me hats?" And I said, "I've been coming here for years, and nobody else ever uses them but me. Year after year, I come here to record, I go to the box they're in, and there they are in the same position I put them in the last time. [laughs] Other people who have recorded here, Ray Cooper or Jim Capaldi, they come by and play, and they never use them. They use the new batch that I had sent, or something else. So it's a shame to just leave them here un-played. They're still yours, though, so I'll bring them back." And he said, "Okay." But I never got a chance to give them back to him. So I'll probably give them back to Dhani. MD: How was this recording arrangement set up? Jim: We'd sit out on the ledge talking until we got around to recording. Then George would sit in the control room with John the engineer and they'd talk to me over the phones while I was out in the big room. They couldn't see me and I couldn't see them. Once we started it was just one song right after the other. MD: Would he direct you to play a certain way? Jim: Oh yeah, George had a lot of set ideas, so he would tell me pretty much what he would want. Basically he would tell me what he didn't want. He didn't want fancy fills and he didn't want too much quirkiness. It was hard to do that sometimes, because he would always talk to me about Ry Cooder and how he loved Ry's records, which I played on. And he loved the quirky side of my playing, which he always got a kick out of. But when it came down to playing on his songs, it wouldn't work for him, so he would always have me kind of straighten out things and play more conventional and basic. Of course I never had any problem with that, because that's the job. I always want to play something appropriate for the song. I don't need to play something that tickles me. That's not what music is about--unless you're doing a clinic or a drum record. MD: Would George ever say to you, "Play this one with a Ringo feel"? Jim: No, he never, ever did that. But I would always do that. Every time I played with George I would think of Ringo. George and John would've had Ringo play on a lot more of their stuff if it hadn't been for the fact that those were supposed to be their "solo" efforts. It wasn't meant to be "having the mates," you know what I mean. MD: I can hear the Ringo influence on "Rising Sun." If anyone can get it to feel like Ringo, it's you. Jim: Well, thank you, but I don't know if anybody can really do Ringo. It's like nobody can ever do Charlie. You just can't do it. It's impossible. MD: Did you hear the songs beforehand? Would George give you demos? Jim: He didn't send me any demos, but he would have ideas on tape. He would call me and ask, "What are you doing in February? Can you come over?" I'd say, "What have you got?" and he'd say, "I've got some new ones and some of the ones you've heard over the years." It was always such a thrill when I'd first hear them. Sometimes he would say, "Um - I don't know about this one," but I'd be like, "God, I love that one, George. Let me put drums on it," and he'd say "okay." So we'd put drums on it, but then I'd never be sure whether he was going to use it. MD: I heard there was a pretty ballad that was left off this record that George wrote with Jim Capaldi. Jim: Yeah. Capaldi is a gifted songwriter and drummer. Jim wrote a lot with Stevie Winwood in the "Traffic" days. We've been friends for many years, so I was happy that they hooked up. MD: So obviously there's more stuff in the can. Jim: Well I hope so, but I don't know for sure - I really liked the song they did but apparently George didn't feel it was quite finished yet. MD: Some of the other tracks you're on are "Pieces Fish," "Never Get Over You"-- what a great feel--and "Vatican Blues." Jim: I hope that song doesn't upset a lot of people. George was pretty outspoken about stuff. But he wasn't mean-spirited. MD: On the song "Brainwashed," you could tell he was mad at the music business. Though, even when he's angry and disgusted, he still sounds peaceful. Jim: He was annoyed at a lot of things during the period when he wrote that song. He went through some pretty heavy stuff man. But you're right, he had a calm and soothing way about him that makes it difficult to actually remember ever seeing him truly angry with anybody or anything. MD: How was George's tribute concert? Jim: It was a very emotional night. People told me it was both powerful and intimate. Eric [Clapton] put together the band based upon people who were close to George and who had a history with him over the years. [Besides Keltner and Clapton, the players included Dhani Harrison, Anoushka Shankar [Ravi's daughter], Tom Scott, Jim Horn, Billy Preston, Jeff Lynne, Joe Brown, Chris Stainton, Albert Lee, Marc Mann, Jools Holland, Klaus Voorman, Gary Brooker, Jim Capaldi, Tom Petty (with Steve Ferrone), Sir Paul McCartney, bass player Dave Bronze, percussionist Ray Cooper, and drummer's Henry Spinetti, and Ringo Starr.] MD: How was it playing with Ringo again? Jim: Oh Man! Playing with Ringo is something everyone should have a chance to do. He's so honest. He just grooves, and when it's time for a fill, he fully commits. I would look over at Henry, and we'd be amazed at what he does to the beat--the way he pulls it back. There's just nobody like Ringo.

Traveling Wilburys' Jeff Lynne Discusses New Book, Rules Out Reunion
For Jeff Lynne, one of the remaining survivors of '80s supergroup the Traveling Wilburys, releasing some of the band's candid photos publicly in the new limited-edition book, the aptly-titled 'The Traveling Wilburys,' was bittersweet.
"The main thing is a sense of loss of George [Harrison] and Roy [Orbison]," Lynne, 62, tells Spinner of looking at the photos. "Those were the two great losses to me personally because they were both great friends of mine, as well as being fantastic musicians and singers."
The Traveling Wilburys had arguably the best-known rock lineup in pop music history: Tom Petty, Bob Dylan, Electric Light Orchestra's Lynne, Orbison and Harrison. Fans who want one of the hardcover books should be willing to look around or pay at least £225 (around $340 US) for it: there are only 3,000 of them, and each is signed by Lynne.
Encased in a cloth box, the 144-page book has numerous colorful photos of the iconic band recording in a Beverly Hills mansion. Folded in are hand-glued note-like schedules, sketches, hand-written lyric sheets, cover artwork and interviews that shed light on the group's artistic process. "What didn't come across in the music was a sense of awe. I see Roy Oribson across the mic, and I go, 'This is really happening,'" Lynne says.
"Hopefully it brings out the diversity and the unity [of the band] all at once," Lynne says of the the book. "Everyone comes from such amazing different places and we all ended up as a unit, which was a very unusual thing." Lynne, a producer who worked on Harrison's final album and co-produced Petty's iconic 1989 LP, 'Full Moon Fever,' is credited with coining the group's name with Harrison, which started with the Beatle saying their instruments "will be buried" in the mix. Lynne added the "Traveling."
As for a 2010-era Wilburys reunion, don't count on it.
"We have never talked about it," Lynne says. "We look at that piece as a nice historic period, and I think it should stay that way. I love the memory of it. I loved doing it. It was some of the most fun I had in life, I would say. I would like to leave it at that and that book about sums it up."
Started over lunch at Dylan's house, the group began with a song that unexpectedly became a single, 'Handle With Care.' That blossomed into 1988's hit 'The Traveling Wilburys Vol. 1,' which sold three million copies and won Best Rock Group Performance Grammy in 1989. Orbison's death in December 1988 -- just months after the first album's release -- shook up the lineup, which released the 'The Traveling Wilburys Vol. 3' (the number is intentionally incorrect) in 1990.
The book's pictures, which include the band's only two photo shoots, show the Wilburys clowning around and hard at work. "We had a lot of people who enjoyed taking pictures," Lynne recalls. "Even George himself took a lot of footage and photographs, movies as well. There was a lot of coverage but not from an official source. Just whenever it happened, it happened."
Lynne credits the new book to Harrison's widow, Olivia, who he describes as "the keeper of all things Wilbury." Lynne wrote the book's foreword, talking about the group's start and recording process: "Sometimes I like to think about those days. It's the most fun you could have without getting in trouble."
In the digital download world 2010, when album artwork may not play a factor in a fan's musical experience, the Traveling Wilburys book is an anachronism, heavy on the handmade artistry feel, conjuring up the album experience of older decades. "No computers, all done by hand," the book's opening page reads.
Asked about his new preferences, Lynne says he is a fan of the Killers but didn't mention any other artists. He does reveal he's getting music tips from his daughters, Laura and Stephanie, and that never-ending source of new music, iTunes.
"Old music is the same as new music -- it's just a different way of delivering it. There is some that I like and some that I don't really know about yet," Lynne says. "If it's an ordinary song, it's still ordinary, however much [paint] you put on it or wrap around it. It's always been the same, really."

You’re asking Wilbury character names, or real names?

Roy Orbison. Two more.

Traveling Wilburys, Volume 1 - The Traveling Wilburys (1988)
POSSIBLY one of the best supergroup offerings, the birth of The Traveling Wilburys was a happy accident. In early April 1988, George Harrison needed to record a B-side for a European single, This Is Love. Harrison's collaborator Jeff Lynne, was producing some tracks for Roy Orbison, and Orbison and Lynne agreed over dinner to help.
Needing a studio on short notice, Harrison suggested they call Bob Dylan, who had a home studio. After dinner, George stopped by Tom Petty's house to pick up his guitar and invited him along, too. The following day, they wrote and recorded the song Handle With Care in five hours, with all five sharing the vocals.
The record label considered the song too good to be used as a B-side, so Harrison hatched the idea to form a band and record an album. The group convened over nine days and put together the rest of the album, with everybody collaboratively writing and producing all the tracks.
Although there some discernible lead vocals (Dylan's Tweeter And The Monkey Man, Harrison's Heading For The Light or Petty's Last Night, for example), for most part, everybody contributed equally to vocal duties.
Released in October 1988, Volume One became the surprise hit of the year, selling 2 million copies within six months. The album was a Top 20 hit in the United Kingdom, and peaked at No 3 in America, where it eventually stayed for over 50 weeks on the charts.
Orbison's death in December 1988, meant that no repeat performance was forthcoming. And though the remaining four put out a second album, it couldn't surpass this release. Christopher

Bob Dylan and Jeff Lynne
The original Traveling Wilburys (L to R) : Bob Dylan, Jeff Lynne, Tom Petty, Roy Orbison, George Harrison. (Wilbury Records)
Jeff Lynne was born on December 30, 1947. He is a singer, songwriter, musician, arranger, and producer. Lynne got his start in the band Idle Race, later joined The Move, and finally found his biggest success in the Electric Light Orchestra. He was also a member of the Traveling Wilburys, which featured Bob Dylan.
The Traveling Wilburys couldn't have happened without Jeff Lynne's involvement. He had co-produced George Harrison's 1987 "comeback" album, Cloud Nine. Soon after, Lynne went on to co-produce Tom Petty's Full Moon Fever, and Roy Orbison's Mystery Girl. During this period, Harrison needed a new track for his single "This Is Love," from the Cloud Nine album, to give extra value to his fans. While the story has been told a number of ways, it seems that Lynne, Harrison, Orbison, and Petty were all hanging out, and recording, around this time. Harrison recruited Lynne and Orbison for the new track. Harrison had left a guitar at Petty's house, so he eagerly joined the gang when the ex-Beatle's instrument was retrieved.
(Dark Horse Records)
Since there was some difficulty finding a place to record, they went to Bob Dylan's home studio in Malibu, California. The five musicians, joined by session drummer Jim Keltner, recorded the song, "Handle With Care." It was deemed too valuable for a b-side, so plans were made to record nine more tracks. The resulting album, Traveling Wilburys, Vol. 1, sold more than five million copies. Unfortunately, Roy Orbison died less than two months after Vol. 1 was released. The remaining four Wilburys reunited in 1990 for the album Traveling Wilburys, Vol. 3.
Jeff Lynne, as Otis Wilbury (Vol. 1) and Clayton Wilbury (Vol. 3), co-produced both albums with George Harrison. Lynne, alone, produced three of the bonus tracks on the 2007 reissue, the Traveling Wilburys Collection. The video of "Inside Out," included on the included DVD disc, featured a slightly different edit.
For the original release of Vol. 1, Harrison went out of his way to create a system for all five Wilburys to share credit equally. On the 2007 reissue, the songs were attributed to different publishers, possibly in reaction to issues with some of Roy Orbison's former publishers.

The Jim Keltner Fan Club
I have reviewed hundreds of albums from the sixties through the nineties and one name that pops up with regularity is session drummer Jim Keltner. He has played with a virtual wing of The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame. George Harrison, Roy Orbison, Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Steely Dan, The Traveling Wilburys, Barbra Streisand, Mick Jagger, Jerry Garcia, Joni Mitchell, Brian Wilson, The Bee Gees, and dozens of others have employed him as their session drummer. Not bad for a person whose first claim to fame was for Gary Lewis & The Playboys 1966 hit single, “She Just My Style.”
During the early seventies he was the regular drummer for George Harrison appearing on several albums plus drumming live on The Concert For Bangladesh and the subsequent tour. He also played with Ringo Starr and John Lennon which increased his profile to one of the premier session musicians in the world.
It was the only Beatle he did not play for that set in motion one of the great jokes of the seventies. Paul McCartney’s Red Rose Speedway contained information about joining the Wings fan club. Harrison and Starr responded by including information about joining The Jim Keltner Fan Club on their albums, Living In The Material World and Ringo. It is not known how many people actually mailed in the required self addressed stamped envelope.
Now 68 years old, Kelter has remained active in the studio and on the road. In the last decade he has toured with Bob Dylan, Simon & Garfunkel, and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. Recently he has drummed in the studio for The Pretenders, Oasis, and B.B. King among others.
Still, no matter who he plays with he will always be remembered as the central character in George Harrison and Ringo Starr’s creation of The Jim Keltner Fan Club.

Stand-in ovation Wilburys Weekend at the Lizard Lounge celebrates the ultimate supergroup
Послушал Handle With Care, зацепило.

Knoking on the haven door зарядил бы Runaway.
Knoking on the haven door

THE TRAVELING WILBURYS by Dan Meth
Why is this supergroup so forgotten? Sure, their albums aren’t exactly the sum of their parts and maybe all of our dads “de-cooled” them by overplaying the cassette tapes… But it’s the closest we have to a Dylan/Beatle duet… which also happens to feature Tom Petty at his peak, rock pioneer Orbison, and the guy from ELO thrown into the mix.

The 20 Worst Songs of 2010, #4: Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, "Don't Pull Me Over"
By Christopher Weingarten, Fri., Dec. 17 2010
Here is the moment where Jeff Lynne finally captures the hard-earned title of "second worst Wilbury."
Tom Petty doing a reggae song broke my brain. Usually when a misguided, quasi-hippie dudebro takes an earnest, po-faced trip to Bonaroo island, I have a stockpile of easy gags to go too--Bob Marley posters in the ol' dorm room, telling mom you've converted to Rastafarianism freshman year. But Tom Petty is no Ras Trent. He's a 60-year-old man. He's old enough to be on posters with Bob Marley, if he were cool and dead like Jim Morrison. This is more like your dad using his golden years to follow around 311. Joke scientists haven't even discovered a word for this (though I recommend "Irie-tirement").
"Don't Pull Me Over" combines the halting, all-elbows island rhythms of a gang of AARP-members doing Peter Tosh with the sad croon of poor, hapless, beaten-down working man Tom multimillionaire Petty crying "Don't pull me over, Mr. Pooooliceman." As far as I can tell, the two underlying messages of the songs are 1)"it [marijuana] should be lee-goo-lized" and 2) Tom Petty fans will listen to anything as long as he drags his husk out and plays "American Girl" once in a while. Seriously this makes the music videos of him trading spit with dead-ass Kim Basinger look sane as hell.
Also, hey Mike Campbell, how about some more wah-wah pedal on that guitar solo, you fuck.
As Petty told Rolling Stone, "We were having so much fun recording that we had to force ourselves to pull the plug -- it could have gone on and on." Congrats dude, it totally feels like it does!

Bob Dylan to Publish 6 More Books
Bob Dylan has not only inked a deal to publish the highly anticipated second and third volumes in his trilogy of memoirs, Chronicles, but the poet laureate of rock has even more books on the way, as well. Crain’s New York Business reports that Dylan’s literary agent sought an 8-figure deal with publishing house Simon & Schuster for the iconic singer-songwriter, which would include the Chronicles follow-ups, a book of dialogue from his “Theme Time Radio Hour” show on Sirius/XM, and 3 more to-be-revealed efforts.
As Rolling Stone points out, Dylan discussed Chronicles: Volume Two back in 2006: “I think I can go back to the Blonde on Blonde album — that’s probably about as far back as I can go on the next book,” he said, adding that he plans to reflect on the period of time in which he was simultaneously recording with the Traveling Wilburys supergroup for their second LP and laying down tracks for his 1990 Don Was-produced Under the Red Sky album.

Bob Dylan Signs Six-Book Deal
Bob Dylan has signed a six-book deal with Simon & Schuster, according to Crain's New York Business, encompassing two sequels to his acclaimed 2004 book Chronicles: Volume One as well as another book based on dialogue from his Sirius/XM radio show Theme Time Radio Hour.
It's unclear what the other three books are going to be. According to the Crain's, Dylan's literary agent Andrew Wylie was seeking an eight-figure deal for the books. (Dylan has not responded to Rolling Stone's request for comment).
In 2006 Dylan told Rolling Stone that he was stunned by the overwhelmingly positive response to the first volume of Chronicles. "The reviews of this book, some of 'em almost made me cry - in a good way," he told writer Jonathan Lethem. "I'd never felt that from a music critic, ever....Most people who write about music, they have no idea what it feels like to play it. But with the book I wrote, I thought, 'The people who are writing reviews of this book, man, they know what the hell they're talking about.' It spoils you."
In that same article, he discussed his possible plans for Chronicles: Volume 2. "I think I can go back to the Blonde on Blonde album — that's probably about as far back as I can go on the next book," he said. "Then I'll probably go forward. I thought of an interesting time. I made this record, Under the Red Sky, with Don Was, but at the same time I was also doing the [second] Wilburys record. I don't know how it happened that I got into both albums at the same time. I worked with George [Harrison] and Jeff [Lynne] during the day — everything had to be done in one day, the track and the song had to be written in one day, and then I'd go down and see Don Was, and I felt like I was walking into a wall. He'd have a different band for me to play with every day, a lot of all-stars, for no particular purpose. Back then I wasn't bringing anything at all into the studio, I was completely disillusioned."

Simon & Schuster.

Hailing the 50th anniversary of Del Shannon's 'Runaway,' a No. 1 song that changed rock; inspired Tom Petty, Nils Lofgren and others
Enchanted by Del Shannon’s “Runaway” as a boy, Tom Petty later paid the ultimate tribute to this No. 1 single and its singer: He saluted the tune in his own 1989 hit song, “Runnin’ Down a Dream.”
Bruce Springsteen guitarist Nils Lofgren said he fell in love with Shannon’s “Runaway” “the second I heard it.”
“The haunting minor chords added an ominous feel to the heartbreak in the lyrics and the resolve to the major chords in the chorus gives a little hope, or at least acceptance that the pain was survivable despite the confusion and heartbreak,” Lofgren wrote me in a recent e-mail.
Pretty heady stuff for a rock song written on the fly by Shannon and keyboard player Max Crook while performing with bandmates at a little Battle Creek nightclub in 1960.
Few could have guessed at the time that this pop single would propel the Coopersville native — born in Grand Rapids as Charles Westover — to national super-stardom or that it eventually would be regarded as a milestone in rock history.
Monday marks the 50th anniversary of Shannon’s recording of ”Runaway” in a New York City studio. Officially released a few weeks later, on Valentine’s Day 1961, it shot straight to No. 1 on the singles chart, an achievement that would cement Shannon’s induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1999.
A phenomenon in the pre-Beatles music scene, the song’s minor chords and lyrics stood out from other “safe” mainstream pop hits of the day.
“‘Runaway’ was the biggest record of 1961 and was riding along the same caliber as Chubby Checker’s ‘The Twist,’” said Brian Young, president of the Del Shannon Appreciation Society, based in Washington.
“It was something totally new and fresh. Del’s vocals in ‘Runaway’ were as if he was hurting so bad, that when he couldn’t explain his hurt and anguish, he’d explode into falsetto.”
The song since has been covered by more than 200 artists — including Bob Dylan, Bonnie Raitt and The Traveling Wilburys — with Petty paying homage to his pal Shannon in “Runnin’ Down a Dream”: “I had my radio on, I was drivin’; the trees went by, me and Del were singin’ little ‘Runaway’ ...”
Lofgren, who re-recorded Shannon’s “I Go To Pieces” with the singer for a 1981 solo album, also recalls playing “a haunting, powerful version of ‘Runaway’ “ with Neil Young in 1983 during that guitarist’s “Trans” tour.
And as a keyboard dabbler, I can’t overlook what makes “Runaway” even more memorable: the instrumental break played by Crook on his “Musitron” invention, a device that allowed him to bend keyboard notes, giving it a distinctive synthesizer-like quality before there were synthesizers.
“When ‘Runaway’ hit in 1961, it was something different: a singer-songwriter who wasn’t movie-star handsome but had a voice with that soaring falsetto that was more distinctive than anything else on radio,” said Bruce Parrott, a Grand Rapids radio announcer and record collector. “Not to mention the keyboard-early synth work on that song was something that had not been heard before.”
Crook, now 74 and living in New Mexico, told me that the keyboard solo came to him “almost instantaneously and complete,” though he and Shannon didn’t suspect the song would be a hit until the New York recording session. It ended up selling as many as 80,000 copies a day after its release. “I am astonished at the enduring popularity of the solo and song itself,” Crook conceded.
To be sure, it ignited Shannon’s career with eight more Top 40 hits, including “Hats Off to Larry,” and sparked an international following that even had The Beatles open for Shannon in 1963 in England, a country where the Michigan native also became a superstar, racking up 14 Top 40 hits and mesmerizing devoted lifelong fans such as Anthony Press, who was just 14 when “Runaway” fever struck.
“It (‘Runaway’) started off this obsession that I’ve had ever since,” Press told me by phone from Great Britain, adding he’s traveled to Coopersville 10 times over the years for that city’s tributes to Shannon during its Summerfest celebration.
Yet despite his vast popularity, Shannon, who sadly suffered from depression and committed suicide in 1990 at 55, never repeated the chart-topping success of “Runaway”: It was his first and only No. 1 hit.
But what a No. 1 it was.
Rolling Stone magazine lists it among the 500 greatest songs of all time, while the Michigan Rock and Roll Legends website ranks it as Michigan’s No. 1 rock song, topping Aretha Franklin’s “Respect” and ? & the Mysterians’ “96 Tears.”
To commemorate the anniversary of the song by Shannon, a 1953 graduate of Coopersville High School, the Coopersville Area Historical Society Museum has created a special “Runaway” display with news articles of the day, photos and gold and platinum records issued to commemorate more than 1 million in sales for “Runaway,” according to museum curator Jim Budzynski, who said Shannon “shined a light on Coopersville” due to his stardom.
But Parrott boasts one unusual Shannon memento that few will ever see.
He interviewed the singer in the principal’s office of Coopersville High School for radio station WCUZ in 1983, after Shannon returned to town to serve as grand marshal for the Christmas parade.
“When we finished, I asked if I could have his autograph. He said, ‘Yes,’ and I looked down at the desk and saw a little stack of yellow paper,” Parrott recalled.
“I grabbed a piece and he signed one for me. It wasn’t till later that I flipped over the paper and saw what it was. I may be the only person to have Del’s autograph on the back of a Coopersville High School hall pass, already stamped by the principal.”

Коллектив даже сделал видео на песню "End Of The Line".
Он обозначал ляпы, которые можно будет убрать во время процесса микширования; появился в результате фразы "We’ll bury' them in the mix" ("Мы уберём их во время микширования").

It’s Never Too Late
It’s not often you meet a nearly 60-year-old man standing on the brink of a promising career in rock ’n’ roll. But then again, a conversation with John Lefebvre proves he is anything but ordinary.
“Let’s be frank, I got into this because I had some money in my pocket but the truth is, you can kick the door open with money but you can’t stay inside very long if it’s all you’ve got,” Lefebvre says.
Music as a vocation may be new to him but Lefebvre’s sound feels lived in, classic and timeless, thanks to decades of practice on the piano and guitar and to the talents of his all-star recording band, part of which — including vetaran musicians Bill Payne, James Hutchinson, Greg Leisz, Rickie Fataar, and Patrick Warren — is joining him on the road.
The Vancouver Sun once referred to Lefebvre the “teddy bear hippie millionaire,” and after a half hour of joking with him over the line from his Salt Spring Island, B.C home, I get the impression the term fits. Born in Calgary, Lefebvre spent his youth strumming Bob Dylan songs around the campfire and worked in law before co-founding a successful PayPal-style system for consumers and gamblers and that aforementioned pocket started to bulge.
In 2007 his company was hit with serious legal issues but positive news arrived as well: a demo Lefebvre had submitted to renowned producer Brian Ahern through musician friend Danny Patton was deemed a hit.
“Brian wrote back a letter to Danny saying, ‘I think I can work with this guy,’” Lefebvre says. “From there on in it was all pretty much magic because Brian has very serious traction in the music racket.”
With Ahern guiding the way, Lefebvre took his first steps into the industry. First stop: T-Bone Burnett’s house for coffee, where the famous musician suggested starting with drummer Jim Keltner, best known for his work with the Traveling Wilburys. To Lefebvre, this was a big deal.
“I grew up sort of idolizing some of these guys,” he admits. “Jim Keltner has played with all of the Beatles. If you were Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne, Roy Orbison and Bob Dylan, who would you pick for a drummer? Anybody you want, right? Well it was Jim Keltner.”
So when Keltner agreed to the project, Lefebvre suddenly found himself living a bit of a dream.
“Once I had Brian and Jim Keltner on board all the other chips just fell and we got this unspeakably good band, maybe one of the best bands in the world to do both the records,” Lefebvre says, referring to his pair (yes, pair) of double albums, 2009 debut Psalings and latest offering Initial Album.
“Now five of them are coming out on the road with me. I can hardly believe it myself.”
Lefebvre’s enthusiasm is contagious.
“I’m still as knocked out today as the first day these guys were coming out to do my stuff. It’s a whole new adventure for me. I always imagined I’d be scared shitless but I’m sort of not. I’m just really excited for the opportunity to play with the guys again.” He chuckles, “I’d really have to try hard to make those guys sound bad.”

Gary Moore, dead at 58, played lead guitar with Traveling Wilburys
Gary Moore, the blues-rock guitarist from Belfast, Northern Ireland, has died at the age of 58. According to various reports, he died earlier today while on holiday in Estepona, Spain. Moore is known for his solo career as well as his work with Thin Lizzy, George Harrison, and others.
There are at least two connections to Bob Dylan:
1. Moore played a cameo lead guitar solo on "She's My Baby", the opening track on Traveling Wilburys Vol.3. However, he does not appear in the video.
2. During his stint as guitarist for Greg Lake, he played lead on the rare Bob Dylan-Helena Springs composition, "Love You Too Much". The version on Lake's self-titled 1981 album also credits the former King Crimson singer as co-writer of the song. You can hear the track in the embedded video on the left.

Bob Dylan and George Harrison through the years
And I'd felt very strongly about Bob when I'd been in India years before-- the only record I took with me along with all my Indian records was 'Blonde On Blonde.' I felt somehow very close to him or something, you know, because he was so great, so heavy and so observant about everything- George Harrison, Crawdaddy, February 1977.
George Harrison was born on February 25, 1943.
Bob Dylan and Harrison were friends for decades. They co-wrote songs and covered each other's material. Dylan collaborated with Harrison on many occasions: in the studio, on stage, and in Dylan's home.
Here's a list, courtesy of Olof:
Late November 1968: The Home Of Bob Dylan, Woodstock, New York
1 May 1970: Columbia Studio B, New York City, New York
1 August 1971: Concert For Bangla Desh, Madison Square Garden, New York City, New York
19 February 1987: Palomino, Hollywood, Los Angeles, California (Guest Appearance at a Taj Mahal concert).
17 October 1987: Wembley Arena, London, England
20 January 1988: The Grand Ballroom, Hotel Waldorf-Astoria, New York City, New York (Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame)
May 1988: Bob Dylan's garage, and Dave Stewart Studios, Los Angeles, California (Traveling Wilburys Vol. 1)
March to May 1990: Oceanway Studios, Los Angeles, California (under the red sky).
April 1990: Wilbury Mountain Studio, Bel Air, Los Angeles, California (Traveling Wilburys Vol. 3)
Mid-October 1992: Bob Dylan 30th Anniversary Concert Celebration, including rehearsals, New York City.
Harrison would often quote Dylan's lyrics like it was scripture. Here's a few examples:
"I'm really quite simple. I don't want to be in the business full-time, because I'm a gardener. I plant flowers and watch them grow. I don't go out to clubs and partying. I stay at home and watch the river flow.
"One body is called the causal body, the next body is called the astral body and the third is called the gross physical body. So death is only relative to birth - If you don't wanna die, you don't get born. But as long as you're born, you've got to die, because just as sure as nighttime is gonna follow daytime, death is gonna follow birth. Like Bob Dylan said, "Look out kid, it's something you did. God knows when, but you're doing it again.
"I said, "You don't have to have a Number 1. You want to be number one. The record is second." I say, if you set yourself up looking for success, when you have a failure, you fall much deeper. I say, bring the two together. As Bob Dylan said, "When you find out you are at the top, you are at the bottom."
George had this to say about writing "I'd Have You Anytime" with Dylan:
"He sang for me, 'Love is all you need/ Makes the world go 'round/ Love and only love can't be denied/ No matter what you think about it/ You're not going to be able to live without it/ Take a tip from one who's tried.' And I thought, Isn't it great, because I know people are going to think, 'S***, what's Dylan doing?' . . . I was saying to him, You write incredible lyrics,' and he was saying, 'How do you write those tunes?' So I was just showing him chords like crazy. Chords, because he tended just to play alot of basic chords and move a capo up and down. And I was saying, 'Come on, write me some words,' and he was scribbling words down. And it just killed me because he'd been doing all these sensational lyrics. And he wrote, 'All I have is yours/ All you see is mine/ And I'm glad to hold you in my arms/ I'd have you anytime.' The idea of Dylan writing something, like, so very simple."
Harrison also recycled a riff from Dylan's "I Want You" for his 1973 hit single, "Give Me Love (Peace On Earth)".
Here's Dylan on Harrison, late 2001:
"He was a giant, a great, great soul, with all of the humanity, all of the wit and humor, all of the wisdom, the spirituality, the common sense of a man and compassion for people. He inspired love and had the strength of a hundred men. He was like the sun, the flowers and the moon, and we will miss him enormously. The world is a profoundly emptier place without him."
The following year, Dylan performed Harrison's "Something" at Madison Square Garden:
"Thank you. There's a tribute coming, I guess it's the next week or the week after, it's over in England, for George Harrison and <inaudible> lot's of people <inaudible> I'm not sure who. But we can't make it. I just want to do this song <inaudible> for George because we were such good buddies."
For what it's worth, I always associate the "Quiet Beatle" with the song, "Ain't Talkin'", where Dylan is in a "mystic garden" and "someone hit me from behind", and now "the gardener is gone."
