ROY WOOD - MOJO AWARDS 2010
ELO former member, Roy Wood, received the "Classic Songwriter Award" from the music magazine "Mojo". This award honors among others his career in 3 classic British bands: The Move, Electric Light Orchestra and Wizzard. The ceremony took place at the Brewery in London on 10 June.
The MOJO Classic Songwriter Award Winner: Roy Wood
PA: "Roy Wood formed three classic British bands: The Move, ELO and Wizzard. He also wrote some of the best pop music of any era, all before he'd turned 22. He has influenced everyone from Paul Weller to Kiss. That's why he is a Classic Songwriter - with a capital 'C' and an equally capital 'S'. This award is long overdue if you ask me. Oh, and have you noticed that I haven't even mentioned his evergreen role during the festive period..."

Sunday Mercury campaign: Roy Wood to win star on Broad Street at Christmas
Oct 24 2010 by Paul Cole, Sunday Mercury
MIDLAND pop wizard Roy Wood is to be the Christmas star of Birmingham – thanks to thousands of Sunday Mercury readers.
The Move, ELO and Wizzard legend will take his place on Broad Street’s Walk Of Stars in the biggest celebration yet, after an army of fans backed our campaign to get him the celebrity honour.
Roy, writer of some of rock and pop’s biggest hits, will be paraded through the city centre streets on a reindeer-drawn sleigh, switching on Birmingham’s Christmas lights as he passes by.
The procession, taking place on Saturday, November 13, will be followed by a ceremony onstage in Brindleyplace, where the Lord Mayor will present him with the honour recognising his contribution to the city. Roy Wood: I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day
Since the Sunday Mercury started its campaign to have Roy recognised on the Walk Of Stars, supporters from all around the world have flooded our offices with messages of support.
Celebrity backers of the campaign have included Brummie rock wildman Ozzy Osbourne, violin superstar Nigel Kennedy, Who Wants To Be A Millionaire host Chris Tarrant, songbird Toyah Willcox and 10cc’s Graham Gouldman.
Last night Roy thanked everyone who backed the Mercury crusade.
“Wow! This is really brilliant!” he said. “If someone had told me when I first started in the music business, that I would be recognised in this way, I would have had a problem coming to terms with that.
“I was born a Brummie, and have lived in the Midlands all my life, and have written most of my music here.
“I have to thank the Sunday Mercury for instigating this. I was absolutely astounded at the thousands of you who sent messages of support to get me this fantastic star award.
“I am also grateful for the kind words from my peers in the entertainment world.
‘‘It’s great to be recognised by the likes of Nigel Kennedy, Ozzy Osbourne, Chris Tarrant and the others.
“Thank you very much indeed to everyone. I look forward to seeing you all there!”
The November 13 event will begin at 4.30pm in the Bullring, where Roy will board his sleigh. The procession will then make its way along New Street, and up Corporation Street to the Cathedral Square.
From there, the sleigh – and two others carrying the Lord Mayor and Miss Birmingham – will run along Colmore Row, into Victoria Square, then through Paradise Forum into Brindleyplace.
As Roy passes each area, the Christmas lights will come on like a trail of snowflakes in his wake. Costumed characters will join in the fun to boost the Xmas appeal.
The presentation will take place on a BRMB radio stage, where Roy’s seasonal smash I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday will boom out so the crowd can sing along.
Then, on Friday December 3, the Roy Wood Rock And Roll Band will play a celebratory concert at Birmingham Town Hall. Tickets, priced £19, are now on sale from the box office on 0121 780 3333.
The Birmingham Walk of Stars is organised and funded by the Broad Street Business Improvement District, which represents the 260-plus businesses in the area – the Midlands premier entertainment district – welcoming more than 100,000 visitors a week.
Previous winners have included Ozzy Osbourne, Lenny Henry, Chris Tarrant, Beverley Knight, Murray Walker, The Archers, Joan Armatrading, Noddy Holder, Birmingham Royal Ballet and football stars from Villa, Blues and Albion.
