Откуда и с чьей помощью The Swingin' Pig "заполучили" эти записи, где и почему вся напечатанная партия хранилась столько лет - "тайна покрытая мраком". На этих дисках собраны редкие записи, ранее не публиковавшиеся, но ценность их не только в этом, но и в том, что к каждой песне есть комментарий, уточняющий где и когда был записан трек и его отличия от того варианта, который мы все привыкли слышать.
Пока прослушал только 1 диск,там на She's A Woman - take 2 МакКартни в середине песни не смог удержаться и засмеялся,но петь продолжил,очень прикольно получилось.

Внимательно посмотрев приложенные сканы полиграфии, я не обнаружил нигде даже упоминания имени Джефф Линна, а для нас это звучит в данном случае оскорбительно, потому что материал практически весь посвещен записи двух песен FREE AS A BIRD и REAL LOVE. Подумал, что возможно, работа производилась сначала без Джеффа, ан нет - и сроки, и многочисленные потверждения, собранные Робертом Портером говорят о обратном.

He was producer.' Jeff Lynne: 'It wasn't an easy thing because they were like mono tapes and John singing on 'em with the piano as well. And so you couldn't really separate anything. So, John is actually playing piano on the records, too, y'know. Um... Which is a great thing. So it kept the integrity of that, and it wasn't like, uh, like his voice just appearing out of nowhere, he was actually doing a performance at the same time. Technically, it was virtually impossible to do it, but we did it because, y'know, we worked at it, very hard.' Ringo Starr: 'So, after that we did, like, a basic track with all these gaps in it. And then, we had to fill in the song, uh, which... which is what happened.' George Harrison: 'What we actually did was remake this song. I mean, even with chords and stuff, we changed chords... We changed the arrangements, we added parts, and we wrote lyrics and then we'd made the multi-track tape of this song, and took John's voice and made him into the track.' Jeff Lynne: 'When it started taking shape, John was sort of in there, coming up singing and... I think everybody at that moment said, Wow, this really works, y'know, and... And I was really thrilled because I'd spent a long, long time, after we'd got the backing done, making the vocals, y'know, fit exactly. And once that happened, I think we were all Oh, yeah, this is really... this is really good. And it's not doing John a disservice or whatever. It's actually making it into a really good record.' Ringo Starr: 'I listened to it [after we'd recorded it] and I thought it sounds just like them. Y'know, I've taken myself away from it for so long, that it... that it was just like listening it from a... like an outsider. And it sounds just like them, it's brilliant.' Paul McCartney: 'When George and I were doing the harmonies and that was what Ringo said, when we got back in the [studio, we thought], it just... it sounds just like the Beatles!' Jeff Lynne: 'It wasn't surprising to me, really, because that's what I went there for, to work with the Beatles. So I always, like, assumed, in my naivety or whatever, that it was going to sounds like a Beatles record, because I'm working with the Beatles.' Я вот всё не перестаю удивляться шаблонности выбора западных исполнителей. Каждый раз встречая новую кавер-компиляцию на тему Битлз, встречаешь практически одни и те же песни. Неужели ни у кого нет желания кавернуть какие-нибудь нестандартные варианты?

Игорь, ты прав! По радио одно и то же: Let It Be, Michelle, Yesterday и Strawberry Fields Forever. Остальное оставляют за кадром.
Отличные фотки,да ещё в цвете.Харрисон в люберецких портках это что то,видно сказывается молодость,недаром его называли "тедди боем".Пол в цепях,прямо промитей или пролетарий шоу бизнеса.
Вот только,врет она все, эта Дейли Мейл,а за ней и лента ру.Фотки эти известные.По крайней мере два снимка есть на блоге нашей глубокоуважаемой SLQ.Одна с полудохлым Джоном,а вторая вообще есть в галерее Джоржа на нашем сайте.
Там и в комментах одна тетенька тоже пишет:

Ну что...Как новичок, попробую поделиться очень интересным бутлегом,вызвавшим довольно большой интерес на beatles.ru - неизданным "альбомом",а вернее материалом,который был записан Полом Маккартни в 1986-1987 годах между Press To Play и Flowers In The Dirt. Продюсировал эти записи небезызвестный Phil Ramone... Кое-что их этих сессий вошло потом и на Flowers In The Dirt, и даже докатилось до Flaming Pie,но большинство вещей до сих пор лежит на полке.

Разумеется.Cуществует масса всевозможных бутлегов с такими записями - к примеру, достаточно известный Paul McCartney Rarities объёмом в 8 СD,куда вошли и некоторые вещи с Return To Pepperland...но всего лишь некоторые.

McCartney still the showman

GLENDALE - In 1993, my parents took me to see Paul McCartney at Philadelphia's 62,000-seat Veterans Stadium - my first rock concert.
We sat in the upper deck, stage right, and Paul played a set of classic Beatles tunes and Wings hits like "Band On The Run" and "Let Me Roll It," peppered with songs from his recently released and coolly received "Off The Ground" album.
Much of that sticky June evening is now a blur. I remember the roar of the crowd when McCartney and his band opened the show with "Drive My Car." I remember being wowed by the fireworks that accompanied "Live And Let Die," which Paul wrote for the James Bond flick of the same name.
More than anything, I remember being terrified somebody would see me socializing with my parents.
Fast forward 17 years to Sunday's McCartney concert at the approximately 18,000-seat Jobing.com Arena in Glendale, where a packed house saw the former Beatle kick off his latest tour.
This older McCartney, clad in a collarless jacket that recalled the 1963 pre- "Ed Sullivan Show" Beatles, was a little less spry and more restrained.
Since I'd seen him last, McCartney had lost his wife of 29 years, Linda, to cancer; gotten remarried to a much younger woman; had a daughter and gotten divorced.
He'd released five more studio records, as well as a couple of live albums.
As for me, I got a job, not as a paperback writer, but as a journalist; moved to Tucson (where they now import California grass); and married a girl with a mother named Loretta (get back, Loretta!).
At Sunday's concert, McCartney bantered casually with the audience, his mischievous sense of humor firmly intact.
Many audience members brought homemade signs with messages such as "Kiss me Paul" and "I want to hold your hand."
McCartney told the crowd he liked to read the signs, but sometimes it made it hard to concentrate on the chords.
"I had one guy with a sign that said, 'I'll trade you my wife for your guitar pick,' " McCartney recalled. "And I said, 'What's she like?'"
McCartney kicked off the show with a medley of Wings hits: "Venus and Mars," an abbreviated "Rock Show" and "Jet."
Next came "All My Loving," the night's only nod to the pre-"Help" Beatles.
The Glendale audience was the first in North America to hear Paul perform his piano-rocker "Nineteen Hundred and Eighty-Five" from Wings' "Band On The Run" album. The song is McCartney at his most unhinged. Flush with wailing guitar solos and an intoxicating bass line, it was written to be played live.
There were homages to McCartney's deceased Beatles mates. A ukulele version of George Harrison's "Something" gave way to electric guitars halfway through.
Paul paid tribute to his murdered songwriting partner, John Lennon, with the song "Here Today," which wonders, "And if I say I really knew you well/What would your answer be?" Later, "A Day in the Life" segued into Lennon's "Give Peace a Chance."
Amidst all the looking back, McCartney found time to play a couple of tracks off his most recent album, "Electric Arguments," which he recorded under the name The Fireman. The joyout "Sing The Changes" willed the audience to its feet. While McCartney's solo career been hit or miss, his work with The Fireman proves that he's still a creative force.
Just as he did when I was a teenager, McCartney broke out the pyrotechnics for "Live And Let Die." Unfortunately, while 13-year-old me found the flames and fireworks exciting, 30-year-old me was terrified.
I wasn't the only one.
After the song, McCartney leaned against the piano and looked like he was catching his breath, still a little dazed from the intensely loud and hot special effects. He gestured to somebody offstage as if to say, "Too much!"
The rest of the show was a trip down memory lane, with Paul egging on the audience as they sang along to "Hey Jude."
He did two encores of three songs each, all Beatles material, and closed the show with "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (Reprise)," which segued into the "Abbey Road" classic "The End."
It's unlikely that McCartney, who is 67 years old, will still be touring when I've got a 13-year-old of my own.
‘Nowhere Boy’ is a biopic chronicling the early years of John Lennon. It follows the young Liverpudlian tyro through his tumultuous familial relations and the earliest days of his first band ‘The Quarrymen’ to his fated meeting with Paul McCartney and George Harrison and subsequent formation of The Beatles.
It’s the directorial film debut of British artist Sam Taylor Wood and features a screenplay from Matt Greenhalgh who wrote Joy Division’s ‘Control’. Aaron Johnson, in the title role was recently honoured with "Best Newcomer" at the Empire Awards and BAFTA saw fit to nominate the film in several categories at this years ceremony.
It’s no real surprise that Taylor Wood would have chosen Lennon as subject matter as she is of course no stranger to celebrity herself. Formerly married to gallery owner and man about Hoxton, Jay Jopling, back in the day she was associated with the now infamous YBA’s (Young British Artists), which included Hirst, Emin and Lucas. Previously working in the field of fine art photography she made an interesting collaboration with the artist Henry Bond in 1993 in which they created a pastiche of the famous Liebovitz shot of Lennon & Yoko lying on the bed (but with the gender roles re-assigned).
For my money though she should probably stick to photography, as this is definitely the films strongest point. There are moments of great visual beauty and it contains moments of Technicolor style saturation that Jack Cardiff would be proud of. However, I found the film overly long, the performances stilted and more than a little self consciously ‘performing arts’; I’m sure it would have been far more successful as a stage play.
That said, if you’re a Lennon fan it’s sure to be of interest and the period detail is a delight.
Icon Home Entertainment release the film on DVD and Blu-ray on May 10th.
Bonus features include Director's Audio Commentary, Extended Interviews, Deleted Scenes and several featurettes including "Lennon's Liverpool" and "The Re-creation of the Quarrymen".

Sir Paul Mccartney - Mccartney's Tour Is Meat-Free
SIR PAUL MCCARTNEY has banned meat from his latest tour - he's serving vegetarian meals to all his crewmembers.
The Beatles star is taking his Up and Coming Tour through the U.S., South America and Europe, and the staunch animal rights activist is making sure all his employees give up meat for the duration of the trek.
A spokesman for the veteran rocker tells Britain's Sunday Express newspaper, "We will serve some 480 vegetarian meals a day to keep the crew going."
British singer Leona Lewis is also taking steps to make her upcoming tour meat-free - she's wiped animal products from the menu when she hits the road in May (10).

Even at 67, Sir Paul rocks like Superman

Sometimes it's easy to forget that Sir Paul McCartney is Beatles royalty. He's so frequently in the public eye -- touring every few years, performing at 2006's Super Bowl halftime show and enduring tabloid harassment following his failed marriage to Heather Mills -- that it can't help but detract from his mystique, making him seem almost like Everyman.
In concert, however, McCartney, even at 67, is more like Superman. Watching him perform 40 vocally demanding songs over nearly three hours Saturday night at a near-capacity Sun Life Stadium, one could only wonder: How does he do it?
On the fourth date of his oddly named ``Up and Coming Tour,'' McCartney, displaying the energy and vocal ability of a man decades younger, gave fans of the Fab Four and his later hits with Wings a night to remember.
With a superb backing band, he performed just about every song anyone would want to hear, from the obvious (Hey Jude, Let It Be, Lady Madonna, The Long and Winding Road, Jet and Band on the Run) to the delightfully surprising (All My Loving, Got to Get You Into My Life, I'm Looking Through You, Two of Us, I've Got a Feeling and, performed for the first time live in the United States on this tour, a deliriously bouncy Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da).
CHILLING RENDITION
And those songs weren't even the night's true highlights. Halfway through the show, McCartney strapped on an acoustic guitar and performed a chills-inducing, solo version of Blackbird, followed by his loving 1982 tribute to slain Beatle John Lennon, Here Today, before which he said, ``I wrote this next song for my dear friend John. Let's hear it for John! Sometimes you don't say all you mean to say to people, and then when they pass away, it's too late.''
A few songs later, McCartney again appeared solo with his acoustic guitar to perform a tender rendition of Eleanor Rigby, flanked by the drummer and guitarist, who came up to sing backups on the chorus, Ahh, look at all the lonely people. Simply lovely.
REVERB-SOAKED
The tributes to his fallen loved ones weren't limited to Lennon. Before his ballad My Love, McCartney honored his wife Linda, who died of breast cancer in 1998: ``I wrote this next song for Linda, and tonight this is dedicated to all the lovers in the audience.'' And McCartney brought out a ukulele -- one of the many instruments he played on this night, including the usual bass and piano, plus electric and acoustic guitar and even mandolin -- for his jaunty version of the George Harrison-penned Beatles staple Something.
``George was a great ukulele player -- let's hear it for George!''
Before Paperback Writer, which featured five-part harmonies, McCartney pointed out for guitar lovers in the crowd that he was playing ``the original guitar I made the original record with in the '60s'' -- a gold-and-brown sunburst, hollow-bodied Epiphone, for those who care about such details.
Other highlights included A Day in the Life, on which McCartney's reverb-soaked vocals did John proud, leading into an audience singalong of Give Peace a Chance; Live and Let Die, during which explosive bursts of fire and other jarring pyrotechnics jolted the crowd; an amped-up version of Day Tripper; and, fittingly, The End, from the iconic album Abbey Road, which ended the second encore and the evening, with the classic line, And in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make.
From the awestruck looks on fans' faces as they headed home, it seems as if Sir Paul is way ahead of the game in that department.

Vatican forgives The Beatles for 'bigger than Jesus' comment
At the height of their fame The Beatles enraged the Roman Catholic Church by famously declaring they were bigger than Jesus.
Their enthusiastic pursuit of the sex, drugs and rock and roll lifestyle also did little to convince the Vatican they were anything other than a thoroughly bad influence.
But now in a move sanctioned by Pope Benedict XVI, the Catholic Church has offered the Fab Four its official seal of approval, forgiving them their various excesses and even lauding them as a “precious jewel”.

In a front page article the Vatican’s official newspaper L’Osservatore Romano, offers a glowing assessment of The Beatles’ achievements 40-years after they split, heralding their “beautiful melodies” and begging the question “what would pop music have been like without the Beatles?”
In an astonishing turnaround the Church dismisses previous moral outrages including blasphemous remarks, drug taking and even the dissemination of Satanic messages through their music.
While recognising that John, Paul, George and Ringo, were no saints during their time in The Beatles, the Vatican assures followers they were by no means the worst behaved rock and rollers of their generation.
Offering the band complete absolution, the article, entitled Seven Years That Shook Music, L’Osservatore Romano said: “Its true they took drugs, lived life to excess because of their success, even said they were bigger than Jesus and put out mysterious messages, that were possibly even Satanic.
“They may not have been the best example for the youth of the day but they were by no means the worst. Their beautiful melodies changed music and continue to give pleasure.”
It went on: “Forty years later the Beatles still astound with their originality and they are a
consolation against the continual assault on music lovers by the record industry.”
And referring to the band’s acrimonious split in April 1970, the article added: “Rather then expressing regret at their break up perhaps the question should be what would pop music have been like without the Beatles?”
The glowing praise may come as a surprise to many Catholics, given the band’s very public attacks on organised religion.
John Lennon sparked international condemnation by Christians of all denominations when he famously declared in 1966 that The Beatles were bigger than Jesus.
In an interview he said: “Christianity will go. It will vanish and shrink. I needn’t argue about that; I’m right and I’ll be proved right. We’re more popular than Jesus now; I don’t know which will go first rock ’n’ roll or Christianity.”
At the time Catholic church was at the forefront of the attacks on the remarks, but two years ago forgave Lennon for his comments, insisting it had merely been the “boasting of an English working-class lad struggling to cope with unexpected success”.
While Sir Paul McCartney and George Harrison were baptized as Catholics, neither followed the faith.
In the late 1960s all four members of the band became fascinated with Eastern mysticism and Harrison later became a devoted follower of the Hare Krishna movement.
Earlier this year Ringo Starr, who turns 70 in July, admitted he had finally found religion saying: “For me, God is in my life. I don’t hide from that. I think the search has been on since the 1960s.”

How John Lennon and The Beatles Made the Epiphone Casino Famous
The Casino was unveiled by the Epiphone Company in 1958, just a year after the operation was acquired by the Chicago Music Company – then the parent of Gibson. But 1964 was the year that the ringing, bell-toned thinline hollowbody guitar entered rock ‘n’ roll history.
It’s unclear whether Keith Richards, who played a ’61 or ’62 model on The Rolling Stones’ 1964 American tour, or Paul McCartney, who bought one in ’64 and took it into the studio for the Rubber Soul sessions the following year, was the first superstar to own a Casino. But the mega-band that will forever be associated with the effervescent, P-90 equipped, six-string is The Beatles. Forty years after their break-up, they are still the crown princes of the Casino sound. McCartney, John Lennon and George Harrison all owned Casinos and played them in the studio. And Lennon, in particular, became a champion of the model, using his on every post-Rubber Soul Beatles album and his early solo recordings.
Both Lennon and Harrison were hooked on the Casino after getting an earful of the crisp tones and bristling sustain produced by McCartney’s Bigsby adorned instrument, which he played on “Drive My Car” and “Taxman.”
When the Revolver sessions began a year later, Lennon and Harrison purchased new 1965 models of their own, making the Beatles (at that time) an all-Casino band. Harrison’s guitar sported a Bigsby, like McCartney’s, but was a sunburst beauty with a stock trapeze tailpiece.
After those sessions, Lennon rarely put his Casino down. It became his main guitar for the rest of The Beatles’ musical career, accompanying him on the band’s third world tour, including their final public concert at Candlestick Park in San Francisco in 1966. Lennon’s Casino was his primary axe on 1967’s Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, chopping out the chords of his compositions “For the Benefit of Mr. Kite” and the sparking arpeggios of “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.”
Despite its extensive service on the era’s most cutting-edge album, the Casino was something of a calculated throwback at birth. In the late ’50s, the blossoming of the rock ‘n’ roll era required more powerful amplification, which made hollowbody guitars feed back. That’s why bluesmen like John Lee Hooker preferred Epiphone models like the semi-hollowbody Riveria and Sheraton. They could be turned up to cut through the noisiest juke joint audiences without howling through their amps. But the tonal qualities of the Casino’s classic hollow, two-f-hole construction and 16th-fret neck joint for additional string tension gave it a unique sound. And The Beatles and other rockers, like Richards, found feedback a desirable component of the era’s expanding sonic palette, and the Casino the perfect, highly reactive brush.
Lennon’s Casino got a prominent facelift during the making of the White Album. The pick guard was removed and the sunburst finish sanded down to bare wood before getting two thin coats of clear lacquer. The revamped guitar made its public debut in the Beatles’ live “Revolution” promotional video, producing an insanely raunchy tone — in contrast to George Harrison’s cherry red 1957 Les Paul, which was a gift from Eric Clapton. Lennon also played the now-natural-finish Casino in The Rolling Stones’ Rock ‘n’ Roll Circus film, backed by Eric Clapton, Keith Richards and Mitch Mitchell for a version of the White Album’s “Yer Blues.” Parenthetically, Harrison also had his own Casino sanded down and refinished clear, believing the strip-down had improved the sound of Lennon’s guitar.
Lennon’s Casino can also be heard on “Get Back,” “I Want You,” “The Ballad of John and Yoko,” the intro to “Across the Universe,” and other Beatles classics, and was in his arms when the group filmed their farewell Let It Be concert atop the roof of the Apple Corp. building on Saville Road. Lennon used his Casino on the Abbey Road sessions, too, and beyond The Beatles, taking the guitar to Canada for the Plastic Ono Band’s famed Live Peace in Toronto concert.
Reportedly, he was interested in having the Casino restored to its original sunburst finish toward the end of his life, but that never happened. Today the guitar is owned by his widow, Yoko Ono, and listed in the inventory of Lennon’s estate as the “Revolution” guitar.

Аукционный дом Sotheby's выставил на торги текст песни The Beatles 1967 года "A Day In The Life", собственноручно написанный Джоном Ленноном. Как сообщает Bloomberg, аукцион пройдет 18 июня в Нью-Йорке.

Удивительно, но почти 65 неизданных треков Пола Маккартни, более четырех часов музыки, охватывающих период с 1971 по 1987, были выложены в интернет в течение последних нескольких дней. Фанаты группы в исступлении бьются над вопросом:”Как вся эта музыка, музыка которая тщательнейшим образом “охранялась” десятилетиями, появилась в интернете для свободного скачивания?”
Многие из песен, как считается, являются копиями лент, принадлежащих Тревору Джонсу, человеку, обслуживающему группу Wings на гастролях, чьи личные архивы были проданы с аукциона Christie's в 1998 году. Другие считают, что некоторые из записей яляются рабочими версиями песен, предназначавшихся для сборников Пола, находящихся, в данное время, в производстве.

Издатель журнала Beatlefan Бил Кинг объясняет, что прослеживается прямая связь между выходом этих записей и объявлением Маккартни о том, что он планирует отлушать все старые записи и издать их на своем новом лейбле Concord Music Group:”Утечка этих записей, неважно по какой причине, был ли это расстроенный новостью работник, имеющий к ним доступ или же эти записи уже давно были «вынесены» и кто-то просто «сидел» на них какое то время, порождает огромное количество различных теорий. Естественно, ничего из этого не было подтверждено, но источник подтвердил свою серьезность приложив к письму дополнительные MP3 материалы, включающие в себя работу Майкла Джексона над “The Girl Is Mine” в которой также принимал участие Маккартни.
Таким образом, скорей всего поток неизданного материала еще не окончен.

I Wanna Eat Your Hand: The Beatles as Zombies!
The Beatles are to be reborn as the undead in a new film adaptation of a graphic novel. The movie - entitled Paul Is Undead: The British Zombie Invasion - will show the band as zombies, after Doubles Features producers Michael Shamberg and Stacey Sher brought the screen rights for Alan Goldsher's illustrated novel.
The books sees an undead John Lennon killing a reanimated Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr. The group travel the world performing gigs, before facing off against zombie hunter Mick Jagger and Yoko Ono, who's a ninja.
It follows in the footsteps in such 'zombification' fiction as Pride and Prejudice And Zombies - which is being made into a feature film with Natalie Portman - and Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter.
"I am a huge Beatles fan like the rest of the world and Alan's mash-up, which really showcases his love of music history and his appreciation of the zombie world, is a fun, funny read," said Sher.
"The illustrations are fantastic, and how can you not love a book where Jesus agrees with Zombie John Lennon, that The Beatles are in fact bigger than him."
There is currently no word when production will begin.

'Let It Be' 40 Years Later: A Look Back at the Beatles' Final LP
Forty years ago this weekend, the greatest band of all time gave the world their final album together: On May 8th, 1970, the Beatles released Let It Be, the Phil Spector-produced LP that featured hits like the title track, "The Long and Winding Road" and one of John Lennon's most famous compositions, "Across the Universe." While the album was recorded during the band's caustic final days, Let It Be would go on to become one of their most celebrated records: it ranked Number 86 in Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
The story behind Let It Be is almost as mythic as the Beatles themselves. The band originally intended to record it as a live-in-the-studio album and movie in 1969. But the ambitious undertaking left the Beatles so weary, they abandoned the project to make Abbey Road instead. Later, Phil Spector added oversweetened orchestral overdubs to many of the album's tracks — even though the record features some of the band's strongest rock songs ever (including "Get Back"). In 1970, the Beatles released the documentary film of the same name, which captured the group's iconic performance atop the Apple Studios building in January 1969. Perhaps due its controversial and detailed look at the Beatles' interpersonal problems, the film itself remains unavailable on DVD.
Despite the album's status in rock history, Paul McCartney was never a fan of Phil Spector's production flourishes on Let It Be. In Rolling Stone's original review of the album, writer John Mendelsohn also criticized Spector's superfluous additions, saying the famed Wall of Sound producer rendered "The Long and Winding Road" "virtually unlistenable with hideously cloying strings and a ridiculous choir" when compared to the version that appeared on the Get Back bootlegs in May, 1969. After years of dissatisfaction with the released version, McCartney announced plans to put out Let It Be… Naked in November 2003, which stripped the Let It Be songs of Spector's ornate production. The original reel-to reel-recording of a 1966 press conference where the Beatles defended their "Bigger than Jesus" comment is set to go to auction on June 13 in Los Angeles.
Speaking with the BBC, auctioneers Bonhams and Butterfields who are selling off this piece of entertainment history, said, "We do know what they said that day, we have just never heard it." Having apparently been kept in a drawer for over 40 years, the tapes are now expected to fetch between $20,000 and $25,000 (£13,000 to £16,500).
The original owner -- a photojournalist -- attempted to sell the recording in 1966 with little interest.
The press conference was recorded in the King Edward Hotel in Toronto and also features John Lennon and Paul McCartney joking about their relationship, with Lennon saying, "We're obviously not gonna go around holding hands forever."
The tape is expected to attract a greater price than some of the items it is being sold alongside, including a cane belonging to Charlie Chapman and one of Michael Jackson's infamous white rhinestone gloves.
Generally, memorabilia relating to the Fab Four flies at auction, with signed items getting the most attention, such as the 2006 sale of a signed 'Sgt. Pepper' album cover that made £16,800 ($25,000) when the hammer fell.

"It could have been a charity thing. Or it could have been because we just met up and said, 'Let's do it.' You never know. But it's not to be so sadly it's all just conjecture."
John Lennon was shot and killed in New York City in 1980, and George Harrison died of lung cancer in 2001.
It seems the legendary musician has had a change of heart in his attitude towards reunions.
The 'Live and Let Die' hitmaker has previously claimed it was a "blessing" that the quartet never performed together again after they split up.
He said: "There was a bit of talk of The Beatles at certain points. What used to happen was three of us would fancy it and then maybe George or John or I wouldn't. In a way it was a blessing. We'd done it, why spoil it? Whether it's god given or not those four people was a pretty good mix."

The Beatles' solo years to be subject of upcoming DVD documentary
"Parting Ways: An Unauthorized Story on Life After The Beatles," out on DVD July 27, will look at events in the lives of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr in the years after the group's breakup.
The single disc DVD to be released by Infinity Entertainment Group will look at John Lennon teaming up with Yoko Ono as his new artistic partner and the music and art they created; Paul McCartney’s solo career with Wings; George Harrison’s music with the Traveling Wilburys, plus his work with HandMade Films; and Ringo Starr’s solo albums and acting roles.
The DVD will also have bonus features: “Stella,” focusing on Paul McCartney’s fashion designer daughter; “Yogi,” exploring the group’s relationship with the Maharishi; “Yoko,” specifically examining her relationship with John Lennon; and “Beatlemania,” a look back at the original fan hysteria.

Notwithstanding Lennon’s love of the skiffle tune, “Rock Island Line,” Presley’s “Heartbreak Hotel” was the first song to open his eyes to the true power of rock and roll. Just 16 years old when he heard the track, Lennon was fascinated not only by Presley’s voice, but also by the jagged guitar work that propelled the song. “Blue Suede Shoes” and “Hound Dog,” released that same year, made an even deeper impact. Until the very end, on “(Just Like) Starting Over,” Presley’s influence was clear.
Chuck Berry
“If you tried to give rock and roll another name, you might call it ‘Chuck Berry,’” Lennon once famously said. The many Berry songs Lennon covered – “Rock and Roll Music,” “You Can’t Catch Me,” and “Sweet Little Sixteen,” to name three – attest to the profound affection the late Beatle felt for Berry’s music. Berry’s sense of wordplay impacted Lennon as well, most obviously on “Come Together.”
Paul McCartney
In his book, Tell Me Why, author Tom Riley writes that Paul McCartney pulled Lennon toward the center, and away from “the fringes that are rock and roll’s true holy ground.” The caustic nature of much of Lennon’s solo work attests to that assertion. It’s also true, however, that McCartney’s melodic skills posed a competitive challenge for Lennon. In a word, McCartney made Lennon a better songwriter.
Bob Dylan
Dylan’s influence on Lennon’s songwriting came to the fore on the soundtrack to Help! “You’ve Got to Hide Your Love Away,” the most obvious example, presents Lennon in a folkie guise, strumming his acoustic guitar and adopting Dylan’s trademark nasal vocal style. Moreover, the title track to the film subtly cops a lyric from Dylan’s “My Back Pages” – specifically, Dylan’s line, “I was so much older then / I’m younger than that now.”
Lewis Carroll
As a child, Lennon devoured the Carroll classics Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass, both of which are rife with sparkling puns and lunatic logic. Two decades after he first encountered these books, Lennon incorporated Carroll’s imaginative syntax and incandescent wordplay into such masterworks as “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” and “I Am the Walrus.”
Julia Lennon
An effervescent presence throughout Lennon’s adolescence, Julia Lennon kept her son apprised of all the great music on the British pop charts, as well as the inroads American performers were making on the British scene in the mid-’50s. She also bought Lennon his first “rock and roll” attire: stovepipe black jeans, and a “shortie” raincoat. More significantly, her death, which occurred when Lennon was just 17, instilled in him a complicated mix of anger, bitterness, and melancholy that fueled some of his most moving material.
Buddy Holly
Lennon first heard Holly’s “That’ll be the Day” in late 1957, by which time he and McCartney were immersed in afternoon songwriting sessions at the McCartney family home. As one of the first white rock and rollers to write his own songs – and great ones, at that – Holly set a standard by which Lennon and McCartney measured themselves. The fact that Holly’s chord changes and vocal mannerisms were relatively easy to duplicate helped the young upstarts in their songwriting efforts, as well.
Yoko Ono
Although Lennon was already at the height of his creative powers when he met her, Yoko Ono opened up new avenues through which the soon-to-be-former Beatle could explore his art. The stripped-down music and lacerating introspection that mark Plastic Ono Band, Lennon’s first post-Beatles album, owe much to Yoko, who pushed Lennon to take greater risks with his music. Lennon’s last album proper, Double Fantasy, was in essence an alternating duet between him and Yoko, featuring songs sung to one another and to the couple’s son, Sean.

Paul McCartney to Receive Gershwin Prize From President Obama at White House
Paul McCartney is set to be honored by President Barack Obama in a June 2 ceremony at the White House, where the legendary rocker will be given the Gershwin Prize, a lifetime achievement award for contributions to pop music. The likes of Stevie Wonder, Elvis Costello, Emmylou Harris, Jack White and Dave Grohl will all pay tribute to Macca in an event that will be hosted by the President and First Lady Michelle Obama.
Other performers slated for the celebration include Corinne Bailey Rae, Herbie Hancock, Faith Hill, Emmylou Harris and comedian Jerry Seinfeld. According to the Guardian, McCartney was selected by a panel of judges including Jimmy Webb, Paul Simon and ASCAP President Paul Williams.
In a statement, James H.t Billington, the Librarian of Congress, said, "Sir Paul has been writing and performing for more than five decades -- as a member of iconic groups and as a solo artist -- in genres ranging from rock 'n' roll to classical compositions. He also has made an impact far beyond music through his humanitarianism and activism around the world."
The former Beatle is just the third musician after Simon and Wonder to receive the Gershwin Prize for Popular Song since the honor, which is designed to acknowledge "the profound and positive effect of popular music on the world's culuture," began in 2007. A PBS special of the event will air on July 28.

The Beatles Lead the Rolling Stone Top 500 Songs
Rolling Stone Magazine gets on with the release of list of “500 Greatest Songs of All Time.” The first and the original list was compiled in 2004 and just recently, it is being updated. Predictably, 23 songs by the Beatles got into the list, and a few of them were “Come Together,” “All You Need Is Love,” “Ticket Ride,” “Can’t Buy Me Love,” “A Hard Day’s Night,” “Eleanor Rigby,” “She Loves You,” “Help,” “Let It Be,” “Yesterday,” and “Hey Jude.” Next to the list, are the Rolling Stones which listed 14 songs. For the 2 to 5 ranking spots, “I Can’t Get No Satisfaction” hit the number 2, John Lennon’s “Imagine,” Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On,” and Aretha Franklin’s “Respect,” rank respectively. Bob Dylan’s “Like A Rolling Stone” is at the top of the “500 Greatest Songs of All Time” list.

Ringo Starr launches North American tour with a little help from his friends
NIAGARA FALLS, Ont. - Ringo Starr and his All Starr Band will spread peace and love to 30 cities across North America, including three stops in Canada.
The annual summer tour was unveiled Wednesday at the Fallsview Casino in Niagara Falls, where the tour kicks off with two shows Thursday (June 24) and Friday (June 25). This is the 11th edition of the All Starr band since 1989.
"I love hanging out with musicians," said the 69-year-old ex-Beatle as he introduced the newest All Starr lineup. Returning from previous lineups are keyboards/sax player Edgar Winter, drummer Gregg Bissonette and keyboardist Gary Wright.
Joining them are guitarist Rick Derringer, The Romantics' Wally Palmar on guitar, and Mr. Mister's Richard Page on bass.
"We are the 1-800 band," Ringo said of his power-packed group. "The main thing I'm looking for when I pick who's in the band is hits. They have to have hits, and we've got lots in this band."
Besides Ringo's hits that include "Photograph," "It Don't Come Easy," and a smattering of Beatles songs, like "With a Little Help From My Friends" and "Yellow Submarine," the set-list for this tour will also feature the likes of Mr. Mister's "Broken Wings," The Romantics' "What I Like About You," Derringer's "Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo," Wright's "Love Is Alive," and Winter's "Free Ride."
With media from Ontario and northern New York state in attendance, as well as about 50 invited guests from the casino, the band played a sample set of eight songs, which featured a new Ringo song from his latest Y Not album, The Other Side of Liverpool.
The album also features the other surviving Beatle, Paul McCartney, sitting in on vocals and bass on "Walk With Me." Asked if there was a chance McCartney might join a future All Starr lineup, Ringo said he used to ask George Harrison but it never happened. "I can't ask him anymore, obviously."
One of the highlights of the tour will be a 70th birthday party at New York City's Radio City Music Hall on July 7, Ringo's birthday. He was asked if there's any significance in having the event in New York.
"It happens to be where we are in the tour," he said.
Two years ago, when asked if he had a birthday wish, Ringo said "more peace and love." That kicked off an impromptu campaign every July 7 at noon when fans around the world are encouraged to give the peace sign. This year's Peace and Love event takes place at New York's Hard Rock Cafe.
Mr. Mister's Page said he was at first intimidated to be asked to join the All Starrs.
"We're going back to the source here with The Beatles," he said. "But Ringo's funny as hell and doesn't take himself seriously at all."
Following the news conference, Ringo recalled his famous words at The Beatles' rooftop performance of "Get Back" when he thanked everyone for coming.
"Thank you, have a great life, and please pass by the casino on your way out."

Paul McCartney plays George Harrison ‘Something’ on ukulele
There was a certain sense of sadness at Hard Rock Calling last night when Sir Paul first mentioned John Lennon and played a tribute to him, but then reminded us further of our mortality by moving on to a celebration of Beeatles guitarist and all around musical inspiration Mr George Harrison, who again is no longer with us.
McCartney told the crowd: “as many of you will know, George was a very talented Ukulele player”. Apparently on one occasion they were both sitting together with said instrument and Paul said, “I’m going to learn one of your songs in the ukulele” … and so he did.
Here’s a video taken from the crowd which gives you a feel for the performance. Macca starts on his own with nothing more than a ukulele, his voice and the crowd participation, before being joined by the whole band in what becomes a beautiful version of a great song:

Ringo Starr and his All-Starrs give a great show at Ste. Michelle Winery in Seattle
August 1, 2010 - Ringo Starr and his All-Starr band performed at Ste. Michelle Winery in Woodinville last night, July 31, east of Seattle.
We arrived around 4:15 and were treated to part of the soundcheck, which was closed, but we could hear it all the same. After a cloudy and breezy day, the weather was beginning to break and the sunshine burst through for a very enjoyable evening of music from the ex-Beatle and his current line-up of classic hits musicians.
This is the 11th version of the All-Starrs since 1989, four decades of touring since Ringo was a Beatle.
The Eleventh All-Star Band Members include:
Ringo Starr – drums, vocals Wally Palmer – guitar, vocals (the Romantics) Rick Derringer – guitar, vocals (the McCoys, Edgar Winter, Derringer Band) Edgar Winter – keyboards, saxophone, vocals Gary Wright – keyboards, vocals Richard Page – Bass, vocals (Mr. Mister) Gregg Bissonette – drums, vocals
Ringo’s tour is promoting his latest album Y Not, his first album since 2008′s Liverpool 8′ in 2008. It features a duet with Paul McCartney on Walk With You, the album’s lead single; and includes guest appearances by Joe Walsh, Joss Stone, Ben Harper, and Richard Marx.

In attendance at last night’s show included Alan White (of Yes, former drummer for John Lennon), Donn Bennett of Donn Bennett’s Drum Studios in Bellevue, and Seattle Pop Culture Examiner Gillian Gaar, (see her Ringo review here) author of “Return of the King: Elvis’s Great Comeback.”
Ringo came on stage on-time at 7:15 with his All-Starrs, for a two hour set of rock classic hits from the Beatles and his All-Starrs former hits. From Y Not, Ringo sang "The Other Side Of Liverpool" and "Peace Dream", the 2005 track Choose Love. From his '70s solo hits he did "It Don't Come Easy," "Back Off Boogaloo" and "Photograph." From the Beatles, he sang "Act Naturally," "Boys," "I Wanna Be Your Man," "Yellow Submarine," and "With A Little Help From My Friends."
Ringo’s humor was in full-swing, making comments now and then about the wine being consumed by the crowd in the reserved seats as well as the sprawling lawn covered with lawn chairs, blankets and little tables with cheese and grapes, imitating someone slurring “more wine!!!” which was hilarious.
At the end of the show, which had no encore (I guess the old “this is the part where we run off, you scream, and then we come back and do more songs. So let’s skip that part and we’ll just stay here”, is also getting old.) Ringo yelled out, “I love you ALL. Thank you very much everyone!” The band bowed and they left suddenly it seemed, leaving us to quickly pack up our blankets before we were trampled down.
Edgar Winter performed his legendary hit "Frankenstein," explaining to the audience in his famous southern drawl that he was the “first one in musical history to do theeee—issss!” and to great cheers, slung the strapped keyboard over his shoulders to begin the awesome song that everyone stood up for. He also did his hit, "Free Ride" which had the audience up dancing and doing air-punches in unison.
Gary Wright did his etherical hit "Dream Weaver" and "Love Is Alive”, explaining how he got the idea for Dream Weaver. He talked about his friendship with George Harrison. He explained that in 1972, George Harrison invited him to join him in India and gave him the book, Autobiography of a Yogi by Paramahansa Yogananda. It would deeply inspire him. He came across a poem that talked about the mind weaving dreams, and that is how this song was born. Gary Wright has a new album called “Connected” and a beautiful new song called “Satisfied.” Ringo then made the comment, "George never gave ME a book!" getting laughs from the crowd.
Rick Derringer launched into an rocking version of his "Rock And Roll Hoochie Koo" -- as well as an energetic rendition of his early McCoys hit "Hang On Sloopy." At that point, with everyone on their feet and dancing with wine glasses in their hands, on their blankets, I commented that “this makes me feel like I’m at Woodstock…” (At Rick's website he has included the video of McCartney's appearance for Ringo's birthday at Radio City Music Hall)
Wally Palmer (the Romantics) did "Talking In Your Sleep" and "What I Like About You." Ringo took the mic and said “I did some talking in my sleep once many years ago and that’s what got me into trouble!” invoking much laughter in the audience.
Mr. Mister's Richard Page performed the band's mid-'80s classics "Kyrie" and "Broken Wings."

At the end, Ringo said "Now this next song got a really poor reception last night and if you don't like it, we'll just drop it from the tour." After which he launched into the Billy Shears intro and everyone cheered, then going into "With A Little Help From My Friends."
The show ended with a tribute to John Lennon with Lennon's "Give Peace A Chance", as a big peace sign came up on the screen behind the stage. It was a wonderful ending and a great night of fun music.

Музыка Пола Маккартни прозвучит в сериале "Песня"
Композиции Пола Маккартни прозвучат в музыкальном сериале "Песня" ("Glee"), сообщает Associated Press.
Бывший участник The Beatles сам предложил создателям сериала задействовать его композиции. По словам Райана Мерфи, одного из соавторов сценария "Песни", Маккартни прислал ему письмо, которое Мерфи сначала принял за розыгрыш. Но музыкант объяснил, что является давним поклонником сериала, и даже приложил к письму нарезку из своих композиций. Известно, что в этот микс был также включен фрагмент песни The Beatles "Michelle" 1965 года.
"Я был буквально ошеломлен. Я же вырос на музыке этого парня. Разумеется, я придумаю, как задействовать эти песни", - сказал Мерфи.
В настоящее время создатели сериала также ведут переговоры с британской певицей Сьюзан Бойл, получившей известность благодаря участию в конкурсе талантов "Britain's Got Talent". Ее приглашают в рождественский эпизод "Песни". Кроме того, предполагается, что одна из серий будет посвящена Бритни Спирс.
Одним из центральных персонажей "Песни" является молодой учитель, решивший стать руководителем школьного музыкального кружка и восстановить его былую славу. Сериал выходит в эфир с мая 2009 года. В настоящее время снято уже 22 эпизода.

Редакция журнала Rolling Stone составила рейтинг «100 величайших песен Beatles». Такую акцию журналисты устроили в честь 40-летия выхода 12-го и последнего студийного альбома легендарной четверки «Let It Be», изданного в 1970-м. При составлении рейтинга учитывались мнения как публики, так и профессионального «жюри» в лице известных музыкантов.
«Леннон, Маккартни и Харрисон установили высокие стандарты песнесложения, - отмечает принявший участие в голосовании Элвис Костелло (Elvis Costello). – И они постоянно эволюционировали и росли как сонграйтеры – от примитивной любовной лирики до масштабных историй с социальным подтекстом. Никто не ожидал такого он обычной поп-группы, которыми The Beatles являлись в самом начале».
В десятку «Величайших песен Beatles» попали «Yesterday», «In My Life», «Something», «Hey Jude», «Let It Be», «Come Together» и «While My Guitar Gently Weeps». Автором двух из них - «Something» и «While My Guitar Gently Weeps» - является Джордж Харрисон (George Harrison), остальные принадлежат перу Леннона и Маккартни. на втором месте- «I Want to Hold Your Hand» и на третьем «Strawberry Fields Forever».

Russian monks in Beatles tribute at Liverpool cathedral
Beatles hits sung by Russian monks in Antarctica will echo round Liverpool's Anglican cathedral as part of a festival dedicated to peace.
It has taken months to track down singers from every continent willing to take part in the Peace, Love And Understanding concert on Saturday.
The monks from King George Island have recorded their Fab Four favourites and sent the video to the UK.
Organiser, John Keats, said: "We have singers from every continent now."
The monks' place of worship, Trinity Church, is believed to be the southernmost church in the world and was built near Bellingshausen Station, Russia's permanent outpost in Antarctica.
Their tribute to John, Paul, George and Ringo will follow the likes of Japanese band, Beatribes, Charlie Guitar from the USA, Nube 9 from Argentina and other groups from around the world.

Помимо Пола Маккартни лауреатами премии центра имени Кеннеди 2010 года стали телеведущая Опра Уинфри, кантри-певец Мерл Хаггард, хореограф Билл Ти Джонс и композитор Джерри Херман.

Вообще лицо Барака производит на меня приятное впечатление, что редко бывает среди политиков. Хочется верить что светлой частичке своего внутреннего мира он где-то обязан и битлам.

3-D Version of Beatles' 'Yellow Submarine' To Shoot In April 2011, Says Star Cary Elwes
Disney announced in March that it plans to shut down Robert Zemeckis' digital animation studio. Apparently "A Christmas Carol" — and its lackluster domestic box office showing — will be one of the studio's swan songs (get excited for "Mars Needs Moms," people!). Yet the closure, so it seems, will have no bearing on the status of "Yellow Submarine," Zemeckis' 3-D motion-capture reinvention of the classic Beatles cartoon.
"That will be going in April of next year, so we're gearing up for that," star Cary Elwes, who will be voicing the role of George Harrison, told MTV News at New York Comic Con, where he was promoting "Saw 3D."
Elwes is not only set to voice Harrison but will slip on that rather flattering mo-cap outfit to play the role. "It's more than a voice. We actually have to perform the roles," he said. "If you know much about motion-capture, it's not just voice-over work. You really have to perform the role."
When I asked if Elwes would be going for a straight imitation of Harrison or if he had any room to strike out into new vocal territory, the actor declined to get specific. "I can't really talk too much about it because I signed a waiver to the effect of not discussing it," he said. "But I can tell you it's going to be a really exciting film. I'm thrilled to be part of it."
He did say, though, that Harrison's family (the guitarist passed away in 2001) has been supportive of the project. "I know the family a little bit and they're very happy about it. I think the film will be really extraordinary thanks to 3-D," Elwes told us. "Today we're able to reinvent the film in a way that will be very, very exciting."

Before The Beatles, there was a band called The Quarrymen. The musical menagerie of John Lennon and his school friends was formed in 1956, inspired by the skiffle craze that was sweeping the country and the intoxicating allure of rock and roll. Over the next four years, the band would evolve, losing players here and there and constantly upgrading — first with the addition of a precocious young guitarist-singer named Paul McCartney and, later, with an even younger guitarist named George Harrison. Eventually, all of the original Quarrymen — save John — would fall by the wayside until only John, Paul and George remained.
Thirteen years ago, the surviving members of the original Quarrymen reunited to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the epochal performance at the St. Peter’s Church Rose Queen garden fête, where Paul was introduced to the band. Since that time, they have continued to play music together and spin tales of those days when legends were born.
With what would have been John Lennon’s 70th birthday fast approaching, the three remaining active Quarrymen — Rod Davis, Len Garry and Colin Hanton — sat down at the Gibson New York Showroom to talk about the formation of the band, playing alongside a young John Lennon and the various characters who played a role in the birth of The Beatles.

Come Together: The Night Lennon and McCartney Reunited
“Valiant Paul McCartney, I presume?” said John Lennon. “Sir Jasper Lennon, I presume,” responded Paul McCartney.
Such was the manner in which the two former Beatles greeted one another when McCartney showed up, unexpectedly, at a recording session Lennon was conducting on March 28, 1974. In the throes of his “Lost Weekend” period, Lennon was in a Los Angeles studio overseeing production of Harry Nilsson’s Pussy Cats album. Present were a number of players – including Stevie Wonder, guitarist Jesse Ed Davis, saxophonist Bobby Keys and Nilsson himself. McCartney was accompanied by his wife, Linda. Lennon’s then-girlfriend, May Pang, was there as well.
“We had no clue he was coming,” said Pang, referring to McCartney’s visit in Peter Ames Carlin’s recent McCartney biography, McCartney: A Life. “All of a sudden we turned around, and Paul was there.”
So began the only instance in which, post-Beatles, Lennon and McCartney ever joined forces in the studio. Remarkably, although Pang had made reference to the event previously, it wasn’t until May 1992 that McCartney confirmed that the studio reunion had occurred. “It’s very difficult to remember those days, because it was all a bit crazy and everyone was getting out of it,” McCartney revealed. “But yes, John was doing some recordings in Los Angeles and I showed up.”
Indeed, the night was late, the day’s “official” sessions were complete, and, by all accounts, the gathered musicians – including Lennon and McCartney – were, to varying degrees, in chemically-induced altered states of mind. Disappointed he had missed the session, McCartney edged toward the drum kit, where Ringo Starr had been sitting earlier, and picked up the sticks. “Ah, okay,” Lennon said, looking around for his guitar. “Maybe we’ll have a little jam.”
As detailed by Carlin, Linda then seated herself at the organ, Wonder manned the electric piano, Jesse Ed Davis picked up his six-string, and a musician from a session next door strapped on a bass. Lennon began ad-libbing some vocals, and Wonder launched into a gospel-style progression that evolved into a funky version of “Lucille.” “Stand By Me” came next, with Lennon, McCartney, and Nilsson sharing vocals. Pang later recalled that the ad-hoc group also pulled together a skiffle rendition of the Leadbelly classic, “Midnight Special.”
The session sputtered on into the wee hours, but technical problems were rampant, and Lennon became progressively irritable. Still, in the words of Pang, the Lennon-McCartney reunion “was like yesterday … they didn’t skip a beat, just went right into it.”
Even more enticingly, although Beatles fans never knew, the spontaneous jam session very nearly sparked a full-on Fab Four reunion. The day after the jam, at Lennon’s invitation, McCartney, Linda, and the couple’s children went to Lennon’s rented Malibu home. Gathered around the pool were Ringo, Keith Moon and a handful of others. Lennon soon joined them. McCartney sat at a piano for most of the afternoon, playing Beatles songs and some standards. Ringo seated himself on the bench next to McCartney, singing along and having a rollicking good time.
As day turned to night, Lennon and McCartney bid their adieus. “Let’s see each other again,” McCartney said. Lennon nodded in agreement. Afterwards, Pang overheard Lennon tell Nilsson, “Wouldn’t it be fun to get the guys back together again?” In the minds of Nilsson and Pang, there was no doubt which “guys” Lennon was referring to. Some might dismiss Lennon’s remarks as whimsical musing, but years later, in an interview with Earcandy magazine, Pang insisted otherwise.
“He wanted to write with Paul again,” she said. “He asked me if I thought it was a good idea. I told him I thought it was a great idea. Solo they were great, but together they were unbeatable. He thought about it and he said, ‘You know what? Let’s go down and visit Paul and Linda.’”
The proposed visit was to take place in early 1975, in New Orleans, where McCartney was working on Wings’ Venus and Mars album. Lennon was back in New York by then, still living with Pang. Just before the trip was to be arranged, Yoko Ono phoned Lennon, insisting the stars were aligned for him to undergo a smoking cessation program. The trip to New Orleans was postponed, and was ultimately abandoned altogether.
Following Lennon’s death, Pang told McCartney about the planned visit that never happened.
“I said to [Paul], ‘For what it’s worth I just want you to know that John really loved you,’” said Pang. “He said, ‘Oh, I know that.’ Then I said, ‘You know, we were going to come down to New Orleans because he wanted to write with you again.’ Paul looked at me and said, ‘Oh yeah … that would have been great.’ I could tell he thought I was just being nice.”
Pang went on to say that McCartney seemed not to want to entertain the thought, perhaps because the idea of such a missed opportunity was too painful. A year later, however, at McCartney’s annual Buddy Holly tribute party in New York, the former Beatle rushed over to Pang as she was talking with Linda McCartney. “Tell her!” McCartney said. “Tell me what?” said Pang. “One of Derek Taylor’s postcards from John fell into our hands,” McCartney said. “John had written, ‘Thinking of visiting the Macs in New Orleans.’”
The postcard was evidence to McCartney that Lennon had wanted, perhaps only briefly, to try and rekindle the greatest songwriting partnership of the century.
