The Making of "Mojo"

"Mojo is power. You've got your mojo working. Things are happening for you." - Tom Petty

"Mojo means the magic, the thing that gets girls excited." - Scott Thurston

The first studio offering from Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers in eight years, "MOJO," finds the legendary band firing away on all cylinders. Instead of hunkering down in a sterile recording studio going over every drum track, guitar solo and vocal nuance with a fine-tooth comb, the group set up shop in its cozy practice space (dubbed "The Clubhouse") to cut the record live, thus resulting in a complete overhaul of its creative process.

Flanked by tiers of guitars and photographs of influences and old friends such as George Harrison, Petty and his longtime compadres (Mike Campbell on guitar, Benmont Trench on keyboards, Ron Blair on bass, Scott Thurston on harmonica and guitar and Steve Ferrone on drums) played face-to-face with the tape rolling to capture the raw energy so familiar to anyone who's ever seen the band in concert. "We haven't done a live record - like a proper live record where the whole band plays together at the same time and we really wanted to do that," Campbell reveals. In between the real work, the band filled time by slinging back beers and riffing on old blues standards like a regular neighborhood garage band - albeit a multi-platinum-selling garage band.

The space the Heartbreakers inhabit on "MOJO" lies somewhere between the British blues of John Mayall and the Southern sensibility of Jimmy Reed with Petty's keen knack for tapping into universal themes of love - both disillusioned and hard won - and desire rounding out the album's 12 tracks. "I wanted to show other people what I hear with the band. This is really where the band kind of lives when it's playing for itself," Petty explains.

As the natural ringleader, Petty challenged the band by refraining from completing demos of the songs prior to pushing the record button in an effort to let things happen organically. By entering the recording process with just lyrics and sketches of chords, Petty allowed the Heartbreakers to explore the boundaries of the songs and transform the seedlings of his original ideas into full-fledged show stoppers.

"Just getting a good song is pretty exciting, because to me the song isn't verifiable until I get into the studio and play it with them and make a good record," Petty claims. "Then it's verified to me. Until then, I'm not sure. It might just be me who likes it."

The rollicking snarl of "I Should Have Known It" and the rough-and-tumble swagger of "Jefferson Jericho Blues" both bear the familiar Heartbreakers stamp, but manage to defy the old, tired warhorse status of so many other artists who share Petty and co.'s longevity.

"You used to have a situation where you'd had a big hit and you had to come up with another one all the time. I don't feel that anymore. I feel more pressure to have something that feels pure to me," Petty says.

With "MOJO" Petty succeeds at following his own principle of presenting the public with a collection of songs that pleases the group as a whole. "I feel like, you know, 10 years from now I can play this and not grimace," Petty states without hesitation.

Live review: Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Joe Cocker @ Red Rocks Amphitheatre
By Candace Horgan and Mark Osler

Watching Tom Petty perform on the opening night of his 2010 tour at Red Rocks with longtime band the Heartbreakers, it struck me that there is something ageless about him.

Sporting a duster and playing Rickenbacker guitars most of the night, he didn’t look much different than when he released his first album in 1976.

Petty’s show Tuesday night was long on hits and material from his latest CD, “Mojo.” Fans reveled in track after track of golden material. In fact, does Petty ever write a bad song? Some may be better than others, but it’s rare to hear a true clunker come out of his oeuvre.

Petty and the Heartbreakers showed a little rust on the opening “King’s Highway.” The mix, in particular, seemed muddy, but cleared up by the fourth song, a gorgeous “Free Fallin’” that Petty dedicated “to all the lovebirds, and to any guy who has cheated on his girlfriend.”

Tuesday’s show had an interesting pace to it. Petty seemed to break it into blocks. After the opener, he did a series of songs from his “solo” albums, including a great “You Don’t Know How it Feels,” with a long, moody jam. Many people in the audience seemed to take the lyrics, “Let’s roll another joint” literally, as I felt like I might get a contact high.

The next block showcased some classics, including “Breakdown,” which Petty and cohorts have always jammed on. This version had Petty sing-speaking a lengthy, moody ending over a solo by lead guitarist Mike Campbell. A raring “Drivin’ Down to Georgia” featured some great piano work from Benmont Tench and a lyrical solo by Petty on a Fender Telecaster.

The third block consisted of songs from “Mojo,” and the new songs are quite a departure from some of Petty’s earlier work. “First Flash of Freedom” sounds like “At Fillmore East”-era Allman Brothers, particularly with guitarists Campbell and Scott Thurston playing stereo guitar solos, the former on a Gibson Les Paul and the latter on a Gibson SG. It was actually sort of freaky how much it sounded like something that Duane Allman and Dickey Betts would come up with. The Allman Brothers love continued on “Good Enough,” while Campbell channeled his inner Jimmy Page on “I Should Have Known It.”

The final block returned to the familiar hits, including an acoustic “Learning to Fly” and trippy, searing versions of “Don’t Come Around Here No More” and “Refugee.” The multi-song encore included a fiery “You Wreck Me.”

Joe Cocker opened the show with a long, hit-filled set. It’s sometimes easy to forget how much Cocker has contributed to rock over the years, but hearing “Feelin’ Alright,” “The Letter,” “You Can Leave Your Hat On,” and the always welcome “With a Little Help from My Friends,” was a good reminder. Cocker’s voice still has its trademark emotive growl, but the volume levels left a lot to be desired. In 27 years of attending concerts, it might be the first time I wished the performer had been turned up so we could feel the impact of the music.

Billboard CD reviews: Tom Petty

ARTIST: TOM PETTY & THE HEARTBREAKERS

ALBUM: MOJO

NEW YORK (Billboard) - Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers have always been a rock 'n' roll band. But "Mojo," a mostly blues-rock opus clocking in at nearly 65 minutes, is for those who've been waiting for the long-lived group to let the throttle out all the way. Petty and lead guitarist Mike Campbell don't restrain themselves with these arrangements, ranging from the tasteful licks of "Jefferson Jericho Blues" (about founding father Thomas Jefferson's plantation proclivities) to screaming solos on "I Should Have Known It" and the album-closing "Good Enough." Benmont Tench gets his own piano and organ spotlights on such tracks as "Running Man's Bible" and the swirling "Something Good Coming," while Petty and company cut a wide swath through Delta blues ("Takin' My Time"), reggae (the pro-pot "Don't Pull Me Over"), garage rock ("Candy") and nods to soul ("No Reason to Cry") and folk ("Something Good Coming"). It's not news that these guys rock, but on their first new album in eight years the Heartbreakers have their "Mojo" working like they never have before -- which is a fine thing indeed.

Review: Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers are `all right' in Oakland
By Jim Harrington
Oakland Tribune

Posted: 06/06/2010 03:36:24 AM PDT
Updated: 06/06/2010 05:41:58 PM PDT

Halfway through the encore of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' concert on Saturday at Oracle Arena, the 59-year-old bandleader closed his eyes and spoke to the crowd mid-song.

"I thought to myself," he uttered during the group's oft-played cover of Van Morrison's "Mystic Eyes," "wouldn't it be great if, for just one moment, everything was all right."

Petty has made a career out of providing those kinds of moments for his fans.

Those moments tend to last three to four minutes and have names like "American Girl," "Listen to Her Heart" and "I Need to Know." They regularly triumph over his listeners' worldly cares and, indeed, make everything temporarily feel all right.

Petty and his Gainesville, Fla crew — which consists of superman guitarist Mike Campbell, keyboardist Benmont Tench, bassist Ron Blair, multi-instrumentalist Scott Thurston and drummer Steve Ferrone — delivered plenty of those instances during what was a huge night for the band, and its fans, in Oakland.

For one thing, it was an early outing (only the third show) in the Heartbreakers' 2010 tour, which is currently scheduled to run into early October. Even more significant, however, was that the band was debuting material from a brand new album, "Mojo," Petty's first with the Heartbreakers since 2002's disappointing "The Last DJ." ("Mojo" is due in stores June 15.)

Those two reasons — along with the usual ones, such as, most notably, Petty's track record as a reliably entertaining concert act — were enough to draw a capacity crowd to Oakland. They also helped generate a sizable amount of media coverage, which included reviewers from Spin and Rolling Stone magazines.

As expected, Petty did not disappoint when he stuck to the fan favorites. Classics like "I Won't Back Down," "Free Fallin'" and "Mary Jane's Last Dance," all of which came early in the two-hour set, certainly haven't lost their power over the years. On the flip side, though, was the new material.

The Heartbreakers performed five tracks from "Mojo" and each one was painfully mediocre. Yet, it must be said, that they failed to impress in a variety of ways. "First Flash of Freedom," for instance, was run-of-the-mill psychedelic rock, while "Running Man's Bible" was a monotonous slow blues number with a somewhat entertaining guitar lead tacked on at the end. The trying quintet of tunes ended with "Good Enough," which simply wasn't.

With those five numbers out of the way, Petty and his men were able to turn their attention toward the songs the crowd had paid its money to hear. The last third of the concert was particularly inspiring as the group raced through killer versions of "Refugee," "Runnin' Down a Dream" and "American Girl," all of which benefitted from Petty's solid vocal work and Campbell's tasty leads.

Those that got to the show on time were treated to an opening set by rock legend Joe Cocker, who turned in a performance that was at least the equal as what came in the nightcap. The 66-year-old Englander was feisty and in tremendous voice as he punched his way through such all-time greats as "Feeling Alright," "The Letter" and, of course, "With a Little Help from My Friends."

Great Show, Amazing Picture
That's my little GIRL!! The show was awesome, & what a GREAT surprise seeing my little girls picture as the opener for the Oakland show review!! Thank you Tom Petty & crew!!

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers hit Northern California Saturday night, delivering a thrilling set to a sold out standing-room-only audience at Oracle Arena in Oakland.

Joe Cocker and his exceptional eight-piece band continue to impress, complementing the Heartbreakers’ hard-charging rock set with a mix of soulful selections from their legendary frontman’s celebrated career.

Clocking in at more than two hours, Tom and the band’s set drew from across their catalog, including “I Won’t Back Down,” “Learning to Fly” and “Don’t Come Around Here No More.” Songs from Mojo, the new album out later this month, continue to evolve as the band hones the live interpretation of their most recent studio masterpiece. While Mike Campbell’s guitar playing is at the forefront of these blues-based gems, it’s the nuanced interplay between the entire group that ultimately shapes how these songs come alive.

Oakland was the first indoor concert of the tour and so tonight was also the debut of the band’s full light and stage production. Laser lights enhance the etherealness of “First Flash of Freedom,” a new song off Mojo penned by Petty and Campbell. Six enormous flat screens above the stage give the crowd an up-close view of the band normally afforded only to those in the first few rows.

With three shows in the books, the 2010 Mojo summer tour is off to a fast and exciting start. Check back often at TomPetty.com for tour updates including photos, show recaps and more!

Майк считает,что блюзовое звучание Mojo,было достигнуто в большой степени благодаря его гитаре sunburst '59 Les Paul,она их даже вдохновила на такой стиль нового альбома.

Guitar inspires Petty's Mojo

Tom Petty got his Mojo working with Mike Campbell's guitar.

The Heartbreakers' new blues-based album was inspired by the sound of Campbell's recently acquired sunburst '59 Les Paul, says Petty's longtime lead guitarist and musical foil.

"I got a new guitar which is actually an old guitar," the 60-year-old picker says from his Southern California home. "It's the classic Jimmy Page, Peter Green, Eric Clapton-era guitar. There were only 500 or 600 of them made that year. There's just something about the harmonic overtones in it when I picked it up and plugged it in, it immediately had that classic British blues sound. It was kind of eerie.

"And Tom had been listening to a lot of blues on our break. So when he heard that guitar, he said, ‘Why don't we build an album around that guitar?' It kinda came from that. It was a combination of Tom wanting to explore that aspect of our influence and wanting to feature this guitar."

And what Petty wants, Petty gets. The 15-song throwback Mojo, in stores June 15, is knee-deep in the blues, with licks and grooves reminiscent of everyone from Muddy Waters to the Allmans to Jeff Beck and with Campbell's tasteful playing and Les Paul in every song.

Recorded live in the studio in old-school fashion, it's the band's first CD since 2002's The Last DJ, and their most vibrant work in much longer.

En route to The Heartbreakers' Canadian tour-opener June 8 in Vancouver, Campbell talked about the blues, Petty's beard and his old-new guitar. Here are the highlights:

This album feels like a travelogue. You've got British blues, but also the sounds of Chicago, the Delta, Texas, Memphis. Were you trying to check all those boxes?

The influences were just instinctual. There wasn't any conscious effort, aside from wanting to put the guitar up front and do it live. And of course, we wanted to have really good songs, not just have a bunch of jamming. Tom worked really hard to write good songs. Growing up in Florida, we listened to a lot of blues, Muddy Waters, Howling Wolf, Jimmy Reed, Lightnin' Hopkins. And that's still the stuff we listen to when we're on break. And then there's the influence of the British stuff. So this is just a hybrid of all the things we've been influenced by.

Were there specific songs or artists you were trying to honour?

Not really. I know Jeff Beck's name came up. But only in the sense of saying, ÔLet's make it sound like a Jeff Beck record, where the guitar is really loud and the band is behind that.' Which we'd never really done. The only other criteria we had was we didn't want to do overdubs. So it was all live off the floor all the solos and most of the vocals. We played without headphones, except for Tom, he had a little earplug so he could hear his vocal. But we were all in the same room, and we just played together. I think that's the beauty of the record, everyone's in the room, everyone's listening, there's no polish. It was, 'We're going to play this top to bottom, and the solo better be good, because if I screw up we've gotta play the whole song again.' And that's really a fun way to do it; it's like playing a gig. You count it off and you go for it. You just have to know in the back of your mind that there's no punching in, no fixing. It steps everybody's game up quite a bit. Everybody focuses more and listens and makes more of a performance out of it.

What's your relationship like with Tom after all these years?

That's interesting. We've gone through a lot of ups and downs over the decades, but we're really close right now. We really have a love for each other and a respect. And we still love working together. I feel like he's my brother. We're so close you can't put a word on it really.

I've read you've never had much interest in making a solo album.

Well, I do. But not while I'm in this band. I was working toward it for a while, and then I thought, 'Why do I want to compete with myself?' The Heartbreakers is my life and I love it. I wouldn't want to do anything to conflict with that. So my attitude is, I'm going to work with The Heartbreakers as long as we can. If that ever does dissolve, then I'll take it seriously. And I have a little side band called The Dirty Knobs I play with locally. I can try out tunes, and some ideas eventually find their way onto a Heartbreakers record. We have a lot of fun. There's no pressure. It keeps me out of trouble. And it's nice to be the boss every now and then.

Is Tom a stern taskmaster?

Stern? He's got a very powerful opinion, and he's usually right. But he's a great boss, a great leader, a great force. It's like having Bob Dylan and Keith Richards in one guy. He's stern when he needs to be, but he's also democratic. And we've been together this long, so obviously it works out well.

So what do you think of his beard?

I think it looks great. Overall, he's really healthy. He had some knee issues a couple of years ago, and he fixed that. So he's in great shape. I think the beard makes him look really good. He's looking the best he has in a long time. And he's real clear, he's focused, he's excited to get out and play. That makes me happy.

Will you be bringing the Les Paul out on the road?

No way! I couldn't deal with the pressure. Gibson has made me a replica that's almost identical. It sounds 95% as good. That's the one I'll take on tour. It's just too expensive to carry the real one around. I may play it locally when I can carry it with me. But I want to use it on the next record. I don't want to damage it out on tour.

Tom Petty Works New 'Mojo' in Oakland

By Barry Walters
Jun 07, 2010 9:31 AM EDT

In a two-hour show that combined hits, covers and an uninterrupted chunk of their upcoming Mojo album, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers once again justified nearly 34 years of popular rock classicism in Oakland on Saturday night. Every new track evoked different early '70s sounds that predate the Heartbreakers' own formation, and most of their enduring FM staples rework styles that stretch back even further. But Petty and cohorts performed with both precision and commitment — a rare combination for a band of vets with a median age nearing 60.

Although he'll hit that milestone this fall, Petty certainly didn't look or sound his age. Like his Heatbreakers, he was dressed primarily in black, which in his case included a velvet suit with fat silver buttons that flanked his shins. Aside from his Grand Ole Opry-inspired fashion sense and the occasional shake of his thick hair mop, Petty remains a low-key entertainer. His sole concession to arena-rock showmanship was in leading a few call-and-response chants that nearly contradicted his lyrical content: A cheery string of "ohh-ohh-ohh"s broke the otherwise sulky mood of his 1985 MTV smash "Don't Come Around Here No More," yet the response that echoed through Oakland's nearly 20,000-capacity Oracle Arena proved his fans didn't mind the occasional mixed message.

From the chugging rhythms of set opener "Kings Highway" to a final encore of their Byrds-y early hit "American Girl," the Heatbreakers maintained an authoritative roar, and the Bay Area audience paid them back with equal enthusiasm. "That you're still here tonight means so much to me," he told them after "Good Enough," a moody Mojo track that evoked Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here" during the verses and the climax from the Beatles' "I Want You (She's So Heavy)" during its thunderous instrumental coda.

The evening's first new song, "Jefferson Jericho Blues," suggested the Allman Brothers' layered guitar leads, while the current radio cut, ""I Should Have Known It," hammered out heavy Led Zeppelin-esque riffs. Covers of Fleetwood Mac's early hit "Oh Well" and "Mystic Eyes," Van Morrison and Them's follow-up to "Gloria," further acknowledged the band's ties to rock's past.

The most satisfying songs of the evening came from the Gainesville, Florida-born rocker's own back catalog. Balancing and bracketing the five-song string of soon-to-be-released album tracks was a cross section of singes from Petty's first 13 years of hits. The Heartbreakers' very first one, "Breakdown," provoked a particularly enthusiastic response: "Come a little closer to me, babe," Petty drawled to the very vocal delight of his female fans. "Why don't you go ahead and give it to me?" he continued, and the women screamed louder. It takes a special kind of talent to make a song about acute depressive disorder seem sexy, and Petty's still got it.

Set list:
"Kings Highway"
"Listen to Her Heart"
"I Won't Back Down"
"Free Fallin' "
"Oh Well"
"Mary Jane's Last Dance"
"Drivin' Down to Georgia"
"Breakdown"
"Jefferson Jericho Blues"
"First Flash of Freedom"
"Running Man's Bible"
"I Should Have Known It"
"Good Enough"
"Learning to Fly"
"Don't Come Around Here No More"
"Refugee"
Encore:
"Runnin' Down a Dream"
"Mystic Eyes"
"American Girl"
