Crosby, Stills & Nash Release More Tour Dates With Tom Petty

David Crosby, Stephen Stills and Graham Nash have just added another U.S. leg to their ambitious 2010 summer tour, and many of the newly added dates include Tom Petty.

First announced in March, the Crosby, Stills and Nash tour already included treks around the Western United States and Europe, and will now incorporate stops in the South and on the East Coast. The 14 additional tour dates begin August 11 at Philips Arena in Atlanta, Ga., following the band’s European performances throughout July. The tour itself opens May 21 in Sonoma, Calif.

Tom Petty will perform with Crosby, Stills and Nash at seven of the tour dates just announced — in Atlanta, Ga., Nashville, Tenn., Darien Lake, N.Y., Washington, D.C., Hartford, Conn., Toronto, Ontario, and Saratoga Springs, N.Y.

Last June, the folk rock supergroup released Demos, an album of demo versions of songs recorded between 1968 and 1971 by the band and its individual members.

40 Reasons to Be Excited About Music: New Issue of Rolling Stone

“You hear it all the time: Rock is dead,” David Fricke writes in the new issue of Rolling Stone, on sale at newsstands today. “But the current state of music is the same as it ever was: There is the good and the bad, and there is always plenty of the former, if you’re willing to seek it out.”

To prove the point, the Rolling Stone staff assembled a rundown of the 40 top reasons to be excited about music right now, starting with our cover stars, the Black Eyed Peas, a group that has perfected the art of global domination thanks to the brilliant maneuvering of philosophical leader Will.i.am. The producer/rapper/friend-of-Bono tells Chris Norris about his theory that music works in circles, not squares (the proof: the success of the 45; the failure of the 8-track), the moment he realized an electro album would be a blockbuster (see: The E.N.D.), and how it’s possible to make a whole song a chorus. “Lots of people say, ‘Black Eyed Peas shit is simple,’ and I’ll be like, ‘No, fool, it’s the most complex shit you even could fathom, that’s the reason it works everywhere around the planet,” Will.i.am says.

RS also spotlights MGMT (Number 17), who tell Vanessa Grigoriadis about rejecting fame in the wake of their blockbuster Oracular Spectacular and returning to their real psychedelic roots for their new disc Congratulations. Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser also open up about their unique dynamic and their personal struggles after their first disc blew up big: “We needed to figure out how to exist in the real world, but we had no idea how to do it,” Goldwasser says. “To have a record deal come along — well, we pretty much convinced ourselves that aliens had done it.” Stay tuned for bonus Q&A, only at RollingStone.com.

The countdown also includes supergroup Them Crooked Vultures, Chuck Berry’s incredible monthly residency in St. Louis, the returns of the Strokes and T.I., the rise of ridiculously cool gear (like the micro music player), Dr. Luke’s awesomely trashy radio hits, badass country singer Jamey Johnson and U2’s epic stadium tour. Plus, RS spotlights female pop divas who are ruling the charts from Rihanna and Katy Perry to Miley Cyrus and Lady Gaga.

No. 23 - Rock's Most Tasteful Guitar Player Is Finally Letting Loose

The Heartbreakers' Mike Campbell has always been a strange breed of guitar hero: He's reluctant to engage much in the way of heroics, preferring to deliver taut, perfect melodic bursts like the four-bar solo that introduces "Refugee." "He's such a great player," says Tom Petty. "His problem is he's so tasteful and doesn't like to show off much." But on the latest Heartbreakers album, the raucous, bluesy Mojo (tentatively due in June), Petty pushed Campbell to step forward. "I think this new record has probably more guitar solos than our whole career put together," says Campbell, who nailed all his ballsy lead parts live in the studio while the rest of the band played. His secret weapon for the sessions was a 1959 Les Paul Standard Sunburst that he recently purchased with his wife's permission (there are only 1,500 of them in the world, and they sell for more than $250,000). When Campbell plugged in for new songs like the unexpectedly riff-y "I Should Have Known It," he found a thick, aggressive Peter Green-era Fleetwood Mac tone that had long eluded him.

"The guy who sold it to me said, 'A guitar like this could change your life,' and he was right," says Campbell. "I'd love to take it on the road, but I don't think I'd be able to sleep at night."

About Mojo

TOM PETTY & THE HEARTBREAKERS MOJO
Tom Petty - Vocals, Guitar
Mike Campbell - Guitar
Benmont Tench - Keyboards
Ron Blair - Bass
Scott Thurston - Harmonica, Guitar
Steve Ferrone - Drums

Some time in the last few years Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers took a left turn. Maybe it was when Petty woke up in the night with the idea of reuniting his first band, Mudcrutch, to cut the album they never got a chance to make back in the early 70s. Maybe it was when the Heartbreakers assembled the mammoth multi-disc The Live Anthology, which detailed thirty years of concerts. Maybe it was when they gave all their home movies, outtakes and live footage to director Peter Bogdanovich to create the Grammy-winning four-hour career documentary Runnin’ Down A Dream. There have been side projects and experiments since the band last went into the studio to cut a new Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers album. With MOJO, they have taken their recent freedom and experimentation to heart. They have gone off the reservation and all signs indicate they aren’t coming back.

The first thing that hits you about MOJO is that the spirit of the Mudcrutch sessions has carried on with the Heartbreakers. This is the sound of a band playing together in a room - not a studio - facing each other, all singing and playing at the same time. The music is alive, with no overdubs or studio trickery. What you hear is what they created on the spot at that time.

Tom Petty says, “With this album, I want to show other people what I hear with the band. MOJO is where the band lives when it’s playing for itself.”

As for the songs, MOJO showcases a wide variety of American music from rock ‘n’ roll to country and both electric and acoustic blues. And then there are the images in Petty’s lyrics which slip in on the melodies and set up a home in your head: The barefoot girl in the high grass chewing on a stick of sugar cane, the run-in with the law that begins when a carload of buddies decide to party with the motel maids, and the hilariously audacious idea of opening an album with an electric blues rocker about Thomas Jefferson’s love affair with Sally Hemings. Petty would probably chuck a rock at anyone who called him a poet, but he sure is a southern writer of humor and sensitivity.

MOJO has juice and guts but it also has some sweet balladry for the slow dancers and even a wacked-out reggae number that is unlike anything that Heartbreakers have done before. It’s the kind of album nobody’s supposed to be able to make anymore. It got here just in time.

The album will be released on Reprise Records on June 15.

Mike Campbell e-mail interview

April 1, 2010

An interview with Mike Campbell became a reality through his birthday present guitar. It is very difficult to put our feeling into words, but we felt like we were climbing to heaven through a series of incredibly pleasant surprises. After years of maintaining a fan site, we feel that we got a present for ourselves. We wish that TP&HB fans will be excited to read this interview.

< Introduction >

Happy birthday Mike! We are so glad to hear that you LOVED the birthday present guitar.
At first, we would like to know? was the Guyatone similar to your first guitar? What were your impressions and memories to the guitar?
Thank you. It is almost identical to the one my Dad bought for me. The only difference is mine only had two pickups. Playing this one brought back a lot of memories. This is the instrument I learned to play on and used for several years performing. It sounds remarkably good compared to more expensive guitars that I now own. It is similar to a Fender Jaguar.

I. The Live Anthology
What challenges did you face when selecting the songs for “The Live Anthology”? How do you want your fans to enjoy this album?
The biggest challenge was listening to hours of performances over the 30 years to find ones that were significant; then, narrowing them down to a final set that represented the best of the band. Many of the analog recordings had to be "baked" and transferred to digital format before we could even listen to them. We found that if the vocal was really good then the band was invariably good too, so we listened to the vocal first as a focus.
What is your favorite track on "The Live Anthology"?
"Lost Without You" ... it was unrehearsed and totally spontaneous...caught a very real emotional performance.
What kind of special emotions occurred when you listened to vintage recordings for "The Live Anthology"? Did you have heartbreaking moments on tracks with Howie and/or Stan?
Hearing Howie was particularly heart-wrenching...and we were reminded how much we miss his friendship and talent. We were pleased to hear our original drummer, Stan, sounding so good on the early stuff. He was always a great source of energy and inspiration.

In general, we were surprised how good the band played in the early years. Though we have grown tremendously over the years, our early stuff holds up quite well.
I (Mayu) was personally delighted to hear the 1997 Fillmore concerts - I flew from Japan to the United States for the very first time to see your shows. I went to three shows (January 31st, February 1st and 2nd), and I remember Roger McGuinn joining the stage for the first two days. Do you have any memories about those nights?
I LOVED those shows. Very free and inspired. The band was able to get really tight playing night after night there for so long. And we were able to be free to do more covers and deep tracks. My best memory is playing there on my birthday... it was the best of all the nights and everyone played beyond the beyond.
A lot of people must have made tons of requests about selection of the songs and/or takes. What did they say? Do you have plans to release "The Live Anthology Part 2" for the tracks that barely did not made it to the album?
There are few if any "left over" tracks. We did our best to include all the best performances. so I doubt there will be a "part 2". However, We DO intend someday to put out the best of the Fillmore run as a special release..... there are so many great performances in there, that the deserve to stand on their own.
Do you plan to release particular concert(s) in its entirety as live albums? We heard that you referred to a possibility of releasing the Fillmore shows on your interview with an Italian magazine.
Yup

II. New Album / Tour
How long did the band spent on recording the new album? Was the recording process elaborate or swift?
The new album "MOJO" was done over a few months... allowing for writing time. It was recorded relatively quickly... live in our warehouse... little or no over dubs.
The band's website states "Mojo" as "the sound of a band making some of its most exhilarating music". Could you share us your further impressions of the album? What are the album's highlights?
We had a great time, because we were performing LIVE... with no headphones. So, the whole group was really listening and reacting to each other instantly. Many of the vocals and all the guitar solos were spontaneous. Two of the highlights for me were "First Flash of Freedom" and "Good Enough".... both of those songs have extended guitar sections like we have never done before, and capture the band at its best.
Does the new album contain songs composed by you (or you with Tom)?
There are three co-written songs... "First Flash of Freedom", "Good Enough", and "I Should Have Known It".
How do you feel about the upcoming summer tour? Are there special things that you do in prior to the touring?
I'm anticipating our best tour ever.... prior to the tour I will probably sleep a lot!!!
How many new songs would you want to play for the summer tour?
Many fans, including us, would love to hear new songs as well as tunes that have not been played for a while in recent shows. How are the set lists decided ? does Tom make the decision, or is it more of a democratic process? If possible, could you take our comments into considerations?
Ultimately, Tom makes the final decision on the set list... and as the singer, it's best that way... naturally we all put in our 2 cents.... (I put in five cents!! ) Tom told me that he wants to do a show with some hits at the beginning, then a large chunk of the new album in the middle, then some hits at the end... this is exactly what I would love.
Tom recently talks in his interviews about his emphasis to recordings rather than touring. Do you agree with him on this topic? If not, what would be your short- to mid-term goals for your career?
Well, recordings last forever as a piece of art... whereas a live performance is in the moment, then gone... so in many ways your legacy is the recordings you leave behind. For that reason we take great care and devotion to the recordings. I agree with him, and we both still love to play live. In many ways, playing live creates the inspiration for what you play in the studio, so both are essential.

III. Guitars
Do you remember what guitars you had used for the original Mudcrutch?
Well, for a time, the Guyatone was all I had... then later I got Gibson Firebird... then a Fender Stratocaster.
For the Mudcrutch reunion tour, you stuck to a single guitar, in particular, a blue telecaster with a string bender. What were your policies for using that guitar?
It was white, not blue... I used it exclusively, as Tom suggested, it would give the album an identity. Also, it was the only guitar I had with a "string bender" which gives a bit of a steel guitar sound.
Your 12-string Rickenbacker guitars apparently have high octave strings below the original octave strings. This configuration is different from the original ? do you remember when you had started this, and for what reason?
It's simply the way it was when I bought it. I didn't know any difference really. Later on I realized it, and now have another one strung the other way for a slightly different ring.
How did Duesenberg bring your custom guitar offer for you? How did you feel about it, and what were your requests for the guitar?
Nathan from Duesenburg brought the guitar to a gig, and I liked it the way it was, so I did the endorsement with him. I like the guitar, and I am proud when I see other artists using it.
Are you interested in having other guitar brands make your guitars? For example, Fender Custom Shop has been very eager to restore signature guitars for various artists, such as Eric Clapton and David Gilmour. We are wondering if they would offer you to make your relic Broadcaster.
Never gave it a thought.
Is Alan "Bugs" Weidel still in charge for your guitars? He is quite famous among many fans, and some desperately wish to speak to him in person. Could you tell us more about him?
Bugs has been with us since day one. He is a one of a kind guy; very down to earth and loyal to the band. He keeps the other roadies under control.
Have you been hunting for particular guitar(s)? What makes you decide to buy a guitar ? are there certain standards for the decision?
Lately I have not been looking... I hardly have room for another guitar in my house right now, and I have pretty much all the ones I ever wanted. When I DO shop... it is for vintage from the 60s and earlier.

IV: In-depth
Tom often refers to Elvis as his childhood hero. Did you have any childhood heroes? Do you have any childhood memories of going to concerts?
Elvis would be one of mine as well.... and Johnny Cash... those were the records my Dad played around the house when I was a kid. Of course, I always focused on the guitar players (Scotty Moore and Luther Perkins). But there are so many from that time that are my heroes.... George Harrison, Keith Richards, Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page, Mike Bloomfield... it was an amazing time to be learning guitar from so many innovators.
What are your current interests, music-wise and non-music-wise? Did you have any recent records that you particularly enjoyed?
I tend to not gravitate toward new records much... I always end up listening to older stuff... J.J. Cale, Howlin’ Wolf, etc... Too much of the music today sounds the same to me.... nothing jumps out like in the 60s. I like a band called Tinariwen...... from Mali..... they are pretty cool.
Could you name five Heartbreakers tracks that are valuable to you?
American Girl
Refugee
Here Comes My Girl
Runnin’ Down a Dream
The Waiting
We have always loved not only your band performance but also your collaborations with various artists. Could you also name five sessions that you are especially proud of?
Don Henley ..... Boys of Summer and Heart of the Matter
Johnny Cash ....... the Rick Rubin recordings
Taj Mahal ........ Lovin in my Baby's Arms
Wallflowers ..... 6th Avenue Heartache
Bad religion ....... Hills of LA

Furthermore, could you tell us five guitars that have been important your career?
Fender Broadcaster
Rickenbacker 12 string
Gibson Gold Top Les Paul
Gretsch Clipper
Gibson 59 Sunburst Les Paul

V: Miscellaneous
How do you spend your time when you are not on tour or recording? Do you meet with Tom or the Heartbreakers on such occasions?
The Heartbreakers don't socialize much outside of work... occasionally we might hang out on NEW YEARS EVE. That's part of the reason we still like each other!!
I tend to write all the time and record in my home studio. I also play small venues with my band THE DIRTY KNOBS. My family is important to me and I spend my time with them.
Who decides the band’s stage outfits? If so, are there certain rules within the band for them? What are your personal fashion preferences?
We just wear what we wear... self-styled if you wanna call it that... we aren't hung up on fashion long as no one shows up in a tutu.
Many fans were surprised by your dramatic hair style change a few years ago. What was the reason for the change? How did the band members respond to you?
I assume you mean my so called "dreads"? It's no big deal... I just quit brushing my hair one year and that’s what happened... I like it because it is low maintenance.
What changes had Mudcrutch reunion brought to you, in terms of guitar playing and spirituality? Would you like to have another reunion album and/or tour?
It was great to reconnect with our old friends and make a fun record that people seem to really like... and time permitting, we would love to do another one. Playing guitar with my old band mate Tom Leadon was inspiring... we like to teach each other things.
Do you plan to expand the Dirty Knobs' activities outside of California? Do you plan to record an album? Would you be willing to tour Japan if someone offered you?
The Dirty Knobs are the world's best kept little secret!! It's a really good band and the guys are way cool... no egos and amazing players. I wouldn't feel comfortable promoting them in a big way as long as the Heartbreakers are together and working so much.... and they understand that, so we play when we can and have a great time. It gives me a great opportunity to try out new material on a live audience that sometimes finds its way into the Heartbreakers songs.
You had visit Japan twice; in 1980 and in 1986 (with Bob Dylan). Do you remember anything about the trips? What are your current impressions about the country?

I love Japan... my step mom is from Okinawa also. I remember the kindness and enthusiasm of all the fans there... and the fascinating culture. I hope we can go there again...
Could you give us messages for the long-awaited Japanese fans?
Thank you for listening... we love you all.

Petty Uses 'Electric Cigarette' Device To Quit Smoking

Rocker TOM PETTY is using desperate measures in a bid to kick his smoking habit.

The Free Fallin' hitmaker has been puffing away for much of his life and now he's determined to quit, so he has taken to using an "electric cigarette" device that he hopes will gently ween him off nicotine.

He tells Parade magazine, "It gives you a shot of nicotine and steam. I'm using these to edge off the smoking."

Petty, 59, admits age, combined with poor health in recent years has made him think seriously about his vices: "It's just part of getting older and realising you have to straighten up."

'Go After What You Love'

At 59, rocker Tom Petty still finds happiness in making music

by Ben Fong-Torres

'I have a very blessed life,” Tom Petty says. “I think any time you’re making a living at what you love to do, you’re blessed. That’s what I try to instill in my kids. Go after what you really love and find a way to make that work for you, and then you’ll be a happy person.”

On this sunny spring afternoon at his Malibu beach house, sitting yards away from the Pacific Ocean, Petty appears to be pretty happy. What he loves to do—and has been doing for more than 40 years—is make music. He and his band, the Heartbreakers, are getting ready for a major tour through 45 cities, coast to coast.

Petty and company will play songs from their first new album in eight years, Mojo, on which they dive into the blues and add a splash of reggae, along with the melodic rock that has taken them to the top of the charts time and time again. Since 1976, he and his band have been known for hits such as “Breakdown,” “Don’t Do Me Like That,” and “Free Fallin’” and for accumulating sales of more than 50 million albums. In 2002, they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Over the years, Petty has played with the greats: George Harrison, Roy Orbison, Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Stevie Nicks.

For the past five years, he has also had a weekly show, Buried Treasure, on the SIRIUS XM satellite radio network. “I play what I want to play and say what I want to say. It’s a labor of love. The feedback I get is so rewarding. I get such nice mail: people remembering things or discovering things. A teenage girl wrote me saying she’d never heard of Chuck Berry. I couldn’t believe it. It’s so rewarding to be passing that music on to people.”

A blessed life, indeed.

Petty and his wife, Dana York, to whom he’s been married since 2001, have a main residence, also in Malibu, and a third place, a “clubhouse,” where his band can rehearse and where he keeps his collection of some 140 guitars.

In front of Petty is a small bottle of Coke. His right hand twiddles with a thin brown stick.

“Got my electric cigarette here,” he says. “It gives you a shot of nicotine and steam.” The vapors substitute for smoke. “I’m using these to edge off of the smoking,” he says. “It’s just part of getting older and realizing you have to straighten up.”

Petty has reason to be thinking about his health. In October, he turns 60, and that’s all right by him. As he likes to say, “If you’re not getting older, you’re dead.”

He is not ready to slow down. “I’m really enjoying playing,” Petty says. “I think we’ll always play. The great thing about the Heartbreakers is that we seem to actually be getting better. And we’ll always give it everything we’ve got.”

Mojo is a looser, bluesier album than any of the others. “I always liked the blues, but I fell purely in love with it about 10 years ago. I started to think, ‘I should be doing that; that’s where my heart is.’”

One theme of Petty’s life and career is embodied in his 1989 hit “I Won’t Back Down.” Soon after signing his first recording contract in the mid-’70s, Petty confronted his record company over his publishing deal, saying he’d been coerced into signing away most of his songwriting royalties. He got his rights back. In 1981, the record label decided to raise album prices by a dollar. Petty would have none of it—and forced the company to retreat. “I honestly thought, as naive as it sounds, ‘Look, I don’t need the extra dollar,’” he says. “‘I’m doing fine.’ But it makes a big deal to the people buying the music.”

His outspokenness, he says, is rooted in “a rough childhood. I developed a problem with authority. Any time that authority was what I interpreted as being unjust, I stood up to it, and that became my personality.”

Tom and his younger brother, Bruce, are the sons of Earl Petty, an insurance salesman, and his wife, Katherine. The family lived in Gainesville, Fla., where his father liked to fish and hunt and would take his sons along. Tom was not interested in his dad’s hobbies or in sports. He was drawn to the arts, and especially to rock ’n’ roll. “I was just a super music fan,” he says. “The first time I tried to write was when I was 14, after I got an electric guitar. I put a song together, and it wasn’t that bad! The writing came natural to me. I thought everybody could do it.” This, he says, drove his father to anger.

“He was very abusive,” both verbally and physically, Petty says. “I had a couple of bad experiences. There was one big fight where he came in and smashed up a lot of records. But it didn’t stop me. Music was in my blood. I couldn’t quit. I never had any choice about what I was going do.”

When he let his hair grow long as a teenager, his father “called me everything in the book,” Petty recalls. “But it just made me stronger in some ways, more determined. And I think music to me, subconsciously, was a safe place.”

He and his father, who died in 1999, never reconciled. “He was a curious person,” Petty says. “As much as he hated rock ’n’ roll and the haircuts and the lifestyle, he kind of got off when we were onstage and it was going well. I remember seeing him in the back of bars here and there watching, and then saying to me later, ‘That was really good.’ One of the best days of my life was when he bought me a Gibson bass and a Fender amplifier. I was knocked out. I was 14.”

Others were more consistently supportive. His mother, Katherine, he says, “was a complete angel. She was cool. She’d give me Rolling Stones albums. My mom was always there, always great. I lost her kind of early. She had cancer, and she also had epilepsy, which was brought on by a car accident. We had to watch her fade out slowly. It was very painful.”

Katherine died in 1980. Petty’s grandmother, who had helped raise him and his brother, remained close. “She thought I was the greatest thing going. ‘You can do anything you want to do. Just do it,’ she would say.”

Inspired by bands like the Byrds, the Kinks, and the Rolling Stones, and blessed with a gift for songwriting and a voice that’s both world-weary and vulnerable, Petty didn’t take long to attain success.

But the rock ’n’ roll lifestyle would exact its toll. In the mid-’80s, Petty had a “huge wake-up call” about his drug use, and in 1996 he separated from his first wife, Jane, after 22 years of marriage. (They have two daughters, Adria, now a film producer, and Kim, an artist. He also has a stepson, Dylan, 17, from Dana’s earlier marriage.) Petty moved into what he has called a “rundown shack” in the woods of the Pacific Palisades. It served as his “bachelor pad,” he says, while he coped with the end of his marriage.

“I think there are points in everyone’s life where they’re tested, and that was certainly one of mine,” he says. “I had deep depression. I just had to find my way out of it. I had some good friends, and I had the music, and if I didn’t get myself together, I wasn’t going to be able to make it. I knew I had to make more music. I wasn’t ready to give up.”

Petty, who played small clubs for years in the ’70s, is amused by the impatience of today’s aspiring singers on American Idol. “They want to start at the top now,” he says, smiling. “I just saw music as something I was compelled to do, something that made me feel good, and I wanted to do it.”

Would he ever do a Tom Petty Rock Band video game? “If we want this music to be accepted by coming generations, it might almost be a necessity,” he admits. “But I wouldn’t want to do a commercial. A lot of younger groups want to be on commercials, but I don’t.”

Petty insists he will keep writing songs and touring until it’s no longer fun or he’s no longer creating good music. “Then I would stop instantly,” he says. “Maybe it’s part of my makeup, but I just take things as they come and go where the wind blows me musically. I just make records. That’s what I do.”

Tom Petty Web Exclusive

In this week's issue of PARADE, Ben Fong-Torres talks to rocker Tom Petty about finding happiness in making music. Plus, why he's showing no signs of slowing down. In the web exclusive below, Petty names some high points of his long, illustrious career in rock music.

The best shows aren't always the biggest.
"I've had a career that I'm so humbled by. There've been so many great moments on stage; it's hard to pick one. Sometimes it's the oddest gig; in the middle of nowhere. Some of them are small moments."

Rocking out with Muddy.
"I got to jam with Muddy Waters once. This was in 1981, and it was at a little club in Phoenix. We had played the big arena and heard Muddy was at this club, so we went straight there to hear Muddy. Someone from his camp came out and said, 'Muddy would like to see you backstage and meet all of you.' It was strange. But he'd married a girl from Gainesville, and he knew all about us. He said, 'Let's play' (on his encore)...So we were walking out to play, and I said, 'What are we gonna play, Muddy?' He said, 'Let's play some blues.' We had such a good time. We left there floating on a cloud."

Another memorable spontaneous gig.
"And I had a thing not long ago with J.J. Cale at McCabe's (a folk music club in Los Angeles). 'Come on down.' He knew Mike Campbell, our guitarist. We practiced a number, and J.J. said, 'When you come up there, stay there; don't leave.' We stayed and had this marvelous time. I left there feeling really great about things, and I think it had a lot to do with this new album (Mojo). He played with such a loose structure to everything, but it worked like crazy. So I found myself playing songs for the first time but really getting a big bang out of it. I looked at the way he structured his songs, and I took a lot of that back to my record. He plays a song once, verse and chorus, and everybody falls into it. And the rest of it is how you express yourself."

Paying homage to Dylan.
"Bob Dylan had a huge influence on us. We worked with him in 1986, backing him up, and we're just forever in his debt. He gave us a whole different way to open the music up. He gave us a lot more confidence on stage, too. Some of the things were really bold, too. We'd have to play stuff we'd just learned. He went for the feel of things; 'If this is feeling good I don't worry about dotting the i's and crossing the t's.' I saw his music very much like jazz or blues; it was very free. It made us want to be a bit bolder on stage, maybe improvise more."

A changed music man.
It had an effect on my writing, too. I wanted it to be a wider thing, where you could take it in on many levels and it would still work. Hard to explain. But we were different after we did that."

Tom Petty - Petty Considers Rock Band

Rocker TOM PETTY is considering adding his name to a new Rock Band video game - but he'll never allow his music to be used in commercials.

The I Won't Back Down hitmaker admits he's on board for fronting a new Rock Band, which enables gamers to play along with his hits.

He says, "If we want this music to be accepted by coming generations, it might be a necessity."

But Petty tells Parade magazine that doesn't mean he's about to relax his rules on using his tunes in commercials: "A lot of younger groups want to be on commercials, but I don't."

Как это что означает название? Эта хрень типа амулета, привораживающая женщин, встречается почти во всех старых блюзовых опусах. вспомните тексты мадди Уотерса. А энциклопедия дает следующее (весьма верное) толкование:
Mojo is a term commonly encountered in the African-American folk belief called hoodoo. A mojo is a type of magic charm, often of red flannel cloth and tied with a drawstring, containing botanical, zoological, and/or mineral curios, petition papers, and the like. It is typically worn under clothing.

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, 'I Should Have Known It' -- New Song

'I Should Have Known It' is the first official single off Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' upcoming studio album 'Mojo.' In stores June 15, their 12th studio album will be the band's first in eight years.

The album's title refers to the strong blues influence featured on 'Mojo,' with Petty crediting fellow southern rockers The Allman Brothers as an influence. Petty also reportedly encouraged long-time Heartbreakers lead guitarist Mike Campbell to shed his somewhat reserved and tasteful demeanor and embrace his inner guitar hero this time around -- which is evident in the Them Crooked Vultures-sounding 'I Should Have Known It,' especially in the bridge and towards the end of the song.

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers will be performing (hopefully this song) on this week's 'Saturday Night Live' and are currently on a massive U.S. summer tour, which kicked off May 6 in Raleigh, N.C. To hear 'I Should Have Known It,' tune into AOL Radio's Adult Rock Station.

In Fricke's Rotation: Tom Petty, Texas Icons, Timber Timbre

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' Mojo (Warner Bros.)
Coming in June, Petty's first album of new material with the Heartbreakers in eight years is one of the best he's ever made with the band. When they break out these songs on tour this summer, you will hear them as they cut them — live, in their suburban-Los Angeles rehearsal space, often in first takes. The writing is up to that rigor too. Shoo-ins for the set list include the desperate velocity of "Running Man's Bible" and the psychedelic waltz "First Flash of Freedom," the latter with guitarist Mike Campbell combining his own lightning with the bright vintage slash of Duane Allman and the 1967 Jerry Garcia.

New Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers Album on Audio Blu-ray Share
Posted May 18, 2010 05:36 AM by Juan Calonge

The latest album by Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, Mojo, will be released on June 29 on audio Blu-ray, two weeks after the CD. The BD will contain all 15 tracks from Mojo in high-resolution stereo LPCM (at 24 bits and 48kHz), and DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround. It is an audio-only disc, with basic navigation and song information displayed on screen; a screensaver switches to non-static images of the cover art 30 seconds after each song begins.

Note that the Amazon page erroneously lists this title as DVD-Audio, but the logo on the cover denotes that this is actually a BD.

The track listing is as follows:
Jefferson Jericho Blues
First Flash Of Freedom
Running Man's Bible
The Trip To Pirate's Cove
Candy
No Reason To Cry
I Should Have Known It
U.S. 41
Takin' My Time
Let Yourself Go
Don't Pull Me Over
Lover's Touch
High In The Morning
Something Good Coming
Good Enough
It must be noted that Tom Petty is an ardent supporter of Blu-ray for music. In an interview with Sound and Vision Magazine, he said that Blu-ray is "the closest you can get to sitting in the control room. I don't know how many people it will immediately appeal to, but more and more people are going to come this way." He considered that "to disregard the hi-fi end of what we do is wrong."

From the album production notes

Some time in the last few years Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers took a left turn. Maybe it was when Petty woke up in the night with the idea of reuniting his first band, Mudcrutch, to cut the album they never got a chance to make back in the early 70's. Maybe it was when the Heartbreakers assembled the mammoth multi-disc The Live Anthology, which detailed thirty years of concerts. Maybe it was when they gave all their home movies, outtakes and live footage to director Peter Bogdanovich to create the Grammy-winning four-hour career documentary Runnin Down A Dream. There have been side projects and experiments since the band last went into the studio to cut a new Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers album.

With Mojo, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers have taken their recent freedom and experimentation to heart. They have gone off the reservation and all signs indicate they aren't coming back.

The first thing that hits you about Mojo is that the spirit of the Mudcrutch sessions has carried on with the Heartbreakers. This is the sound of a band playing together in a room, not a studio - facing each other, all singing and playing at the same time. The music is alive, with no overdubs or studio trickery. What you hear is what they created on the spot at that time.

Tom Petty says, "With this album, I want to show other people what I hear with the band. Mojo is where the band lives when it's playing for itself."

As for the songs, Mojo showcases a wide variety of American music from rock 'n' roll to country and both electric and acoustic blues. And then there are the images in Petty's lyrics which slip in on the melodies and set up a home in your head: The barefoot girl in the high grass chewing on a stick of sugar cane, the run-in with the law that begins when a carload of buddies decide to party with the motel maids, and the hilariously audacious idea of opening an album with an electric blues rocker about Thomas Jefferson's love affair with Sally Hemings. Petty would probably chuck a rock at anyone who called him a poet, but he sure is a southern writer of humor and sensitivity.

Mojo has juice and guts but it also has some sweet balladry for the slow dancers and even a wacked-out reggae number that is unlike anything that the Heartbreakers have done before. It's the kind of album nobody's supposed to be able to make anymore. It got here just in time.

The producer's note informs that the 48K, 24-bit audio on this disc has 256 times more resolution than a CD, providing greater detail and reproducing the music's full dynamic range, from the softest to the loudest sounds. To achieve full dynamic range it's necessary to master with less overall level, so this disc might not sound as "loud" as a standard CD or film soundtrack. The note concludes: "To compensate for this, turn up the volume!"

An Inside Look at Tom Petty's Mojo

There are fifteen songs on Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' forthcoming June 15 release Mojo - their first record in eight years - but the 59-year-old rock legend is nervous about some of them.

"The challenge is getting people to hear the record," Petty told Poison Ivy at an intimate listening party at Germano Studios in New York's Soho neighborhood Thursday night.

"Radio stations don't play [entire] records," Petty elaborated.

There may be a lapse in the radio format, but after hearing Mojo in its entirety - on Germano's fantastic 5.1 Surround Sound system - we'd like to advise them to make an exception.

Mojo opens in true heartland fashion - with scattered chords and shout-outs ("That's impressive!" Petty offers before track one even begins). Check out a track listing, along with Poison Ivy's take on each song, below.

1. "Jefferson Jericho Blues" - A wailing guitar tremors through this fast-paced blues anthem that Petty will perform on Saturday Night Live this weekend. Petty has found a seat directly across from me in the dimly lit recording studio. He has on a suede navy jacket and a pair of barely penetrable sunglasses. Beside him are his wife, Dana York, manager, Tony Dimitriades, and several band and crew members.

2. "First Flash Of Freedom" - Here's the single. Not the song you'd pick out out of a lineup, with its ethereal tone and flighty flashbacks: "We felt so much more than our hearts could explain." Petty is bobbing his head.

3. "Running Man’s Bible" - A nomadic, mid-tempo highway track with a somber quality: "I don't speak of the times I've nearly died," Petty sings.

4. "The Trip To Pirate’s Cove" - Keeping on the somber, melodramatic theme, here's a tune about a lost love. "She was a part of my heart/now she's just a line in my face." Petty takes a big sip of whiskey.

5. "Candy" - A playful, child-like song you want to sing along to. Sample lyric: "I sure like that candy/I don't go for them turnip greens... I don't drink Coca Cola. But I sure like an old moonshine." Petty's laughing. A blunt is lit.

6. "No Reason To Cry" - A heartfelt love ballad. Petty gets up and is walking around the room.

7. "I Should Have Known It" - Here's a bat-out-of-hell, Zeppelin-esque rager we'll be singing for weeks: "And now it's over/now you see/that's the last time you gonna hurt me."

8. "U.S. 41" - Rootsy, traintrack ballad that could have easily soundtracked There Will Be Blood. Petty looks somber. Big inhale.

9. "Takin' My Time" - The opening drum line on this song is no different than "Bad to the Bone." For a minute you even think he's going to cover it. "When I was a little boy/honey my fuse was lit/yes it was." Sex track.

10. "Let Yourself Go" - "When time's are hard and you start feeling lone, let yourself go." Here's a memorable, tambourine-encrusted, lounge-y song.

11. "Don’t Pull Me Over" - This is the first time Petty smiles in the entire two-hour session. It's a Bob Marley-inspired Bohemian jam about marijuana reform. Petty grins for a few seconds before the cryptic melody begins. "Don't pull me over, Mr. Policeman. What I've got to do won't hurt anymore. Don't pull me over... Should be legalized."

12. "Lover’s Touch" - "She's got the lover's touch." Not the strongest wolf in the pack.

13. "High In The Morning" - Here's a wise Petty talking to what seems like a younger, less wise Petty: "Boy that power belongs to the devil. Leave it alone... It hurts my heart/to see a young man fall/hurts me to the bone. To see him high in the morning/and by the evening, see him gone."

14. "Something Good Coming" - Slow, optimistic track, and Petty wants to explain himself. "I'm an honest man," he pleads. "I know so well the look on your face."

15. "Good Enough" - Petty seals the deal with the love story about a girl that rarely hears no. "If she marries into money/she's still gonna miss me. And that's gonna have to be good enough."

A wild applause erupts following the session, and Petty thanks us with a fist pump.

"Shit yeah I'm happy," he says, when I ask if he's pleased with the finished product.

Интересно,что Том вроде пытается оправдываться перед фанами за этот альбом(ну мне так кажется).В первой статье:

Tom Petty says, "With this album, I want to show other people what I hear with the band. Mojo is where the band lives when it's playing for itself."

Этим альбомом,я хочу рассказать людям,что я слышу вместе с группой.Мойо это альбом показывает как живет группа,когда играет для себя.

There are fifteen songs on Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' forthcoming June 15 release Mojo - their first record in eight years - but the 59-year-old rock legend is nervous about some of them.

"Radio stations don't play [entire] records," Petty elaborated.

Тут оказывается Том беспокоиться,что радиостанции не берут в ротацию новые песни,типа не в формате.

Можно ещё добавить, некоторых фанов шокировало появление Тома с колобасами и бубном в песне “I Should Have Known It” на шоу SNL.

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, 'Something Good Coming' -- Video Premiere

It may have taken an extra moment or two, but it seems as if Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers have their mojo workin' again. Their first album in eight years -- appropriately entitled 'Mojo' -- is set to be released on June 15. It was originally supposed to drop earlier and the unexpected delay forced the band to reschedule some of their summer dates. No big deal -- the tour has been rerouted and will now kick off in Oakland, Calif. on June 5.

If the first single, 'Something Good Coming,' is any indication, it's safe to say that fans have a lot of good things coming indeed. Petty digs right into it with the Heartbreakers in step and the breezy sound marks a return to form for the famously crafty singer-songwriter.

Of course, Petty is no stranger to fancy videos, having won awards with such visually memorable classics as 'Don't Come Around Here No More' and 'Last Dance with Mary Jane.' But for 'Something Good Coming,' he chose to let the music do the talking.

Preview: It's a good old-fashioned rock 'n' roll record at a good old fashioned listening party

Tom Petty and Jeff Slate.

May 19, 2010 (New York, NY) -- Tom Petty is sitting at the mixing board in the control room of Manhattan's Germano Studios with his wife Dana on his left. I'm sitting on his right. Pretty cool.

We're listening to the Blu-ray 5.1 mix of his new album "Mojo" -- his first album with the Heartbreakers in 8 years -- and Petty's tapping his red Converse and pulling hard on his electric cigarrette, while listening intently to what's blaring from Germano's top-notch system.

At one point Mike Campbell, the Heartbreakers' guitarist and Petty's "co-captain" in the band rips out a truly spine-tingling fill and Petty bounces up and down in his chair. He turns to me and looks over his dark shades and chuckles that half-menace half-exuberant Florida chuckle of his. He likes what he hears.

"Man, that sounds fantastic," Petty says to "Mojo" co-producer, engineer and mixer of the 5.1 Blu-ray Ryan Ulyate when the playback is done. And it does.

While Petty makes the rounds of the 30 or so people lucky enough to be invited to the listening party, Dana Petty and I hatch a plan to try to convince this rock icon to do the album start to finish, bookended by hits, perhaps doing multiple dates in those cities and advertising the album nights as such to anyone who might only want the best of Petty's illustrious catalogue. It's not a crazy idea.

"Mojo" is, at 70 minutes, a good old-fashioned rock 'n' roll double album that screams to be played live. In a word, it's epic. The songs are not the perfect 3-minute pop songs Petty is known for. Instead it's full of long, bluesy jams around stellar, unique songs played by one of the last great bands from an almost bygone era in rock music.

"Tom was listening to a lot of old blues records and Mike (Campbell) was listening to a lot of Zeppelin," Heartbreakers keyboardist Benmont Tench tells me. It shows. In fact, the era and sound that "Mojo" owes the most to is late-60's London blues like the Peter Green fronted version of Fleetwood Mac; that pre-Led Zeppelin moment in rock where American blues met tuneful British virtuoso playing. A great pedigree, and Petty and his Heartbreakers live up to their lofty aspirations.

But this is also a classic Tom Petty record. So extended band workouts like the instant classics "First Flash of Freedom" and "Good Enough" sit alongside beautiful and moody melodic stunners on the mellower side like "Trip to Priate's Cove", "No Reason To Cry"and "Something Good Coming."

What first strikes you about "Mojo" is how great it sounds. It really seems (especially on the 5.1 Blu-ray and most likely on the uncompressed vinyl coming next month) that you're sitting in the middle of the band while it plays just for you.

"I tried really hard to capture the sound of the Clubhouse (Petty's warehouse turned studio in Los Angeles)," says Ulyate, having cut his teeth on Blu-ray on last year's stunning "Live Anthology." "Except for some ear candy here and there, the surround sound experience in particular is created by the band playing live and the placement of mics around the room. That's what's great about working with Tom. He's really game to push the technology to offer the best listening experience possible."

But more than anything, throughout "Mojo", both Petty's songwriting muse and the playing of the Heartbreakers is on fire.

"I don't think we could have made this record 15 or even 10 years ago," Petty tells me, blunty. "We've always been a great band, but we've really blossomed in an unexpected way and this album really showcases that. I'm really happy with this record. I always say that, but this time there's something really special going on."

So everyone is in a great mood as the hour gets late and the evening winds down. It's been a good old fashioned listening party, with the artists in attendence no less. And you can tell they want to be here. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers are proud of "Mojo".

They should be.

TRIP TO PIRATE’S COVE

http://uk.eonline.com/uberblog/b182476_sneak_cut_trippin_with_tom_pettys_pirate.html

I took my few belongings
We headed out to Pirate’s Cove
In my buddies old (defender?) . . . . <<??
We ran until the gas got low

We were flying close to heaven
Everything was starting to close
Driving in the sunset
Rolling ‘cause we had to roll . . . . <<??

I think he was a preacher
But Lord I can’t recall his name
He was running out of wind
but talking to me just the same

He said five will get you ten
before you got to stay in the game
Yeah you got to let it ride or you
only got yourself to blame

We lost a wheel in Santa Cruz
so we partied with some motel maids
My friend said ”I don’t like mine
so whatdaya say we trade”

She was a part of my heart
now she’s just a line in my face . . . . << << ** great line
They let us go with a warning
said they’d book you but we don’t have case

My friends said take her with you
To leave her hear would be a crime
But lets get out of Santa Cruz
‘cause all I got is a Canadian dime

I got a friend in Mendocino
and its getting close to harvest time
and she was kinda cute
if a little past her prime

On the trip to pirates cove
On the trip to pirates cove
Drivin in the sunset

36. (tie) Mike Campbell (Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers)

I don’t think Tom Petty would argue with this: The band should be called Tom Petty and Mike Campbell and the Heartbreakers. As a co-writer, a co-producer and a phenomenally melodic guitarist, Campbell has as big a claim on that band as anyone. Never showy, every note he plays is in service of the song, whether Campbell is gassing up “Honeybee” in the garage or keeping “Free Fallin’” lighter than air. His versatility is further evidenced by his session work, in which he’s played with the Dixie Chicks, Bad Religion, D’Angelo and Bob Dylan. – Bryan Wawzenek

Mojo Listening Parties

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and Reprise Records are looking for enthusiastic fans to organize and host a listening party for the Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers’ upcoming album Mojo.

What is a listening party?

It’s an event held at a venue of your choice (local bar, record store, coffee house, your living room, etc) where the new album is played several times over the house stereo system. Ten fans will be picked from different cities to host their own listening party! The party should preferably be held in a public place so that fans and their friends and anyone else who wanders into the venue gets a chance to hear Mojo in its entirety prior to its official release on June 15th! These grassroots events help spread the word about Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers’ and the new album while also providing a great time for fans, old and new.

If you are chosen to hold the listening party in your city, Reprise Records will send you a "listening party kit" which will include a CD and posters to help you promote your event. In addition, you will later receive a free copy of Mojo on vinyl and Blu-ray AND free tickets to a Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers show of your choice (some restrictions may apply depending on the show). All listening parties must take place between June 10th and the 15th.

Please read the rules and guidelines on how to submit your proposal for the opportunity to hold your Mojo listening party.

RULES AND GUIDELINES

1. Ten fans will be picked (possibly more depending on how many proposals are submitted) from different cities across the country. The party can be held either at a venue of your choice (preferably a public place such as your local bar, coffee shop, or record store, but your own living room is acceptable as well). The duration of the event should be roughly 2-3 hours.

2. You must submit your proposal on why you think you should be the one chosen to host the listening party via email. The deadline for submissions must be emailed to MojoListeningParty@TomPetty.com by June 2. Each listening party proposal will include details about your party such as the date you plan to hold the event, the venue where it will take place, what other festivities you have in mind, how you plan to promote the event, and how many attendees you think you will have (20-30 attendees minimum are required). Winners will be notified by June 6th.

3. Participant must agree to play the record at least as long as the event is taking place. You may integrate some other favorite Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers material, but the focus will be to get yourself, and your friends stoked on the new songs on Mojo. If the event is taking place in a public place such as a bar or coffee shop, the owner, bartender or clientele must agree to play Mojo and other Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers material for the duration of the event. Most bartenders or clientele should be excited to accommodate you as you will be bringing in business for them, especially if the party is being held at an otherwise generally slow time for them.

4. The Listening Party Kits will be shipped to all winners to arrive by June 8th. The package will include:
a) Mojo CD
b) 11 X17 full color posters
c) Reprise Records will email you fonts and images from album art to create emails, banners, and widgets to help promote your event on your local blog, Myspace, or Facebook.

5. Mojo must be played on the venue house stereo system and not a little ipod speaker or boombox in the corner of the room. It is important that no other music is played in other parts of the venue.
6. All listening parties need to be documented to prove the event occurred in order to receive tickets. Digital photos of the listening party are required and video clips if possible. We will upload the photo/video from the listening parties to TomPetty.com and the band’s Myspace and Facebook Pages.

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers appreciate your support in helping get the word out about Mojo!

Очередное интервью с Томом.

Tom Petty, the interview: 'I wanted to rough it up'

No one could blame Tom Petty for feeling a little entitled. After all, most rock stars who have been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, played the Super Bowl halftime and sold more than 60 million records are well into the rock-royalty phases of their career. Which means they’re coasting.

But Petty is a rock star who doesn’t behave like one. He’s more about work and process, rather than rewards and nostalgia. Chalk it up to his working-class Florida roots or a litany of potentially career-ending (or at least career-sidetracking) roadblocks: the break-up of his first band, Mudcrutch; Petty’s bankruptcy in 1979 amid a record-company squabble; the 1997 dissolution of his 22-year marriage to Jane Benyo that plunged him into a depression; the death of longtime bassist Howie Epstein in 2002.

Yet Petty is making some of the best music of his career right now, no small feat for a rocker who has been at it for more than 30 years. He released an excellent solo album in 2006, “Highway Companion,” playing most of the instruments himself. He following it up by reassembling Mudcrutch for the 2008 better-late-than-never debut album they didn’t get a chance to make the first time around. And on June 15, he and his band the Heartbreakers will release, “Mojo” (Reprise), an unusually unvarnished document of the band in top form.

In a recent interview before beginning a tour that brings him and the Heartbreakers to the United Center on July 17, Petty at 59 sounded fired up – or as fired up as anyone with a relaxed, Southern drawl can. For him, the music yet to be made is still the most exciting part of a career that is showing no signs of self-satisfied stasis.

Q: You’ve been doing this for 30-plus years without any embarrassing misfires, and a string of solid albums and tours. That’s harder to do than it sounds. Any tips?

A: We were really interested in the music most of all, and still are. We always played pretty head’s up ball with everybody. We weren’t attached to a fad. Maybe people felt there was an honesty to the trip. We always tried to make music that we felt had a timeless quality. More than anything it was just trying to adhere to keeping the bar as high as we could. I don’t think we noticed everyone around us to a great deal, because all our energy was going into what we’ve been doing. Then we’d look up occasionally and, yeah, we noticed a lot of tail lights going by (laughs).

Q: There were a few moments, though, where it could’ve easily come apart. Did you ever feel like it was over for you guys as a band?

A: The one moment I’m sure of is when Howie died. If (original Heartbreakers bassist) Ron Blair hadn’t been there to step back in, I personally would’ve called it a day as far as the Heartbreakers are concerned. I don’t know about them, but they probably would’ve too. I couldn’t have faced a new person filling that slot, it would’ve felt phony. I owe Ron a lot. From that point on the band got reinvigorated and got a new start.

Q: It wasn’t a game-changer when (original Heartbreakers drummer) Stan Lynch left the band in 1994?

A: It was very different with Stan. We were prepared for Stan to leave. That had been coming for a long time, and none of us was shocked when he did leave. It felt like we could do more with a new drummer. If it had been two of us gone, it would’ve violated the pact, the idea of having this group, having it stick together, to see what we could create out of this same group of people. It would’ve felt false.

Q: Yet you see so many bands down to one or two original members still touring behind the original name.

A: The thinking is usually financial, and it’s much easier to go on with a brand name rather than starting over. But that kind of thinking always lets me down.

Q: It’s rare for bands to hang together this long. What keeps you bonded to the Heartbreakers? And how do you keep it fresh after 30-plus years?

A: They’re my old friends, my brothers from way back, to when I was a young boy. They’re a talented group of guys, and we tend to complement one another. I don’t think there is something better I could be doing. I don’t long for a new band. On the contrary, I keep finding more in this group to work with. “Mojo” is a huge opening of a door for us. Every now and then you hit something where you find some new ground, and this is definitely one of those times.

Q: In the 2007 Peter Bogdanovich documentary, “Runnin’ Down a Dream,” keyboardist Benmont Tench says he never felt like a hired hand or the member of a backing band, even though you’re the only guy with individual billing. You’re first among equals, obviously, but how you do keep the Heartbreakers feeling invested?

A: I don’t think there’s ever been a relationship in the band where we’ve treated someone like a hired hand. We involve everyone in everything. I don’t stay in better hotels. I’m not treated any different than they are. We had very few times where we had a crisis in the voting about anything. At least the majority of us feel the same most of the time. Our trip has never been about becoming a celebrity or being in People magazine. Today it seems people want to start at the top, start at “American Idol” and go on to some form of instant fame from there. But ultimately that’s not a good way to go. Musically, there are not a lot of things like us around anymore. We came up playing live for our living, and then became a recording act after lots of trial and error. That served us really well.

Q: Why did you reunite with your old band Mudcrutch after all these years?

A: I felt there was unfinished business there. It was such a great band, but they never got their shot. That’s some of the most fun I’ve ever had doing that record. That was just absolutely self-indulgent fun. Those sessions went so well I wanted to involve the Heartbreakers in that sort of trip; we were going for a whole performance when we recorded rather than doing it piece by piece.

Q: Mudcrutch shares some personnel with the Heartbreakers, but did you see it as a detour from what you do with the Heartbreakers?

A: It’s definitely a detour, especially in the way we were applying what we did to country music, which we had huge education in the ‘70s. Mudcrutch is basically a West Coast rock band, the way it sounds. And for me, playing bass instead of guitar puts a different spin on things. It’s an entirely new rhythm section from the Heartbreakers. And it amazed me how easy it was, how quickly that sound returned. We made that Mudcrutch record in 10 days, with only four songs finished before we went in. Everyone got involved, threw in something, and afterward I thought, ‘Why in hell would I ever record any other way?” (laughs).

Q: So the Heartbreakers used a little bit of the Mudcrutch approach?

A: Yes. We got into a comfortable space in our rehearsal room (in north Hollywood, Calif.), which we call our clubhouse. We don’t have headphones. We sit in a semi circle, and recording doesn’t feel much different than a rehearsal would feel. One odd thing about the Heartbreakers, they have never rehearsed for an album. Each album has been created on the studio floor. That’s what we did this time to an even greater degree. I didn’t have demo tracks. I’d come in and teach them a song on guitar, just the skeleton structure, and then we’d work it up. As soon as we had something working as group, there was a recording of that event, and that became the record.

Q: So you basically recorded the band live?

A: Yeah, we’d never done it to this extent on a Heartbreakers records. We rarely went for a guitar solo or finished vocals as we were recording the basic track. We were more in record-making mode on past albums. We threw that idea out the window this time. We weren’t trying to construct something for the pop-music market. We’re really playing for ourselves. This is a record we couldn’t have made in the ‘70s and ‘80s because we weren’t really good enough as musicians. We’re using our age as a plus in this sense, in that we’ve become better musicians. For the last 10, 11 years, I’ve been immersed in blues. That’s what I listen to all the time and we got caught up in that vibe on this record.

Q: When do remember first becoming aware of the blues?

A: I feel like I was always aware of it. Most garage bands were playing blues in crude form during the ‘60s. I think about groups like the Animals or the Rolling Stones in the ‘60s, and all those singles you’d hear on the radio. But growing up, we didn’t have any radio station that was playing original blues. I had to learn about it from the Rolling Stones. They singlehandedly saved that music for my generation. We have to thank them for that. We’d scan the credits on albums from English artists, and be introduced to people like Bo Diddley, Howlin’ Wolf, Slim Harpo. And then we’d find the great beauty of that music. People think it’s simple, but it’s very tricky to play. I knew the structure of the blues when I was 14, 15, but I didn’t really know the music. I learned as I went along. As I listened to it more and more, there was a purity to it that I didn’t feel pop music had. I don’t think “Mojo” is really a blues record. It’s our version of it, but it’s leaning toward that side of record-making. It fits us very well right now.

Q: So in studying that music, how did that change your approach as a band leader?

A: I wanted to push (guitarist) Mike (Campbell) on this record especially. He’s by nature very tasteful and doesn’t overplay, but I wanted to create stuff where he could play a lot. I wanted him to be another voice on the record. On the “Highway Companion” album (2006), I put him on slide guitar. When we did Mudcrutch, we put him on B Bender Telecaster, which creates a very particular sound (similar to a pedal-steel guitar). On “Mojo,” he had a ‘58 Les Paul and we got a great sound on it right away and I said, “Let’s just stay with that guitar for the whole album.”

Q: Was there a particular feel you were going for?

A: I intentionally wanted the album to be rougher, not polish it up or make it a production piece. Let the space make the sound, and leave as much air in the arrangements as possible. Let ‘em breathe. I gave the engineer a bunch of records to listen to, early Jeff Beck Group, Traffic, Jimi Hendrix, the first Led Zeppelin record, John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers, and I said, “This is the kind of sound I want to get.” I also had him listen to Muddy Waters and John Lee Hooker.

Q: What do you like about those records?

A: Well, I like Traffic a lot because of the way they use these traditional song structures, but they could be very improvisational within that structures. Of course, what we do isn’t going to come out sounding like any of those records, but it allows us to get our version of that kind of music. It inspired our band, created a whole new power to work with. This band plays American music, and we play all types. This is another chapter.

Q: What’s your favorite thing about being in a rock band – playing shows or making records?

A: I love to make records more than anything. The idea of making something out of nothing. It’s more than a hard time for the music business and expectations for sales have gone down. But the music still reaches a lot of people. Even if it didn’t I’d still make the record. I don’t think people are going to stop making them. I’m old fashioned in that I try to make an album that’s a complete statement. I try to make records with a beginning, a middle and an end, and say something with that form. I feel right now that recording is more important than anything we’re doing. I was convinced to tour this year, and I’m gonna do it. But I could’ve just as easily gone back in and done another record. We were hot when we quit.

Q: Will there be another Mudcrutch record?

A: I certainly do see myself doing another Mudcrutch record, and I would be interested in getting Mudcrutch on the road. We did two weeks on the West Coast the first time, and we were just playing new stuff. And the audience knew it.

Q: You’ve been known for playing new stuff on your tours at the expense of some of your better-known hits.

A: Yeah, well, we’ve had enough looking back now. We’ve been through all the 30th anniversary stuff and the movie. OK, we’ve summed that up. Now it’s time to move forward, play some new stuff, show people we’re still creating. We will not turn into a jukebox.

Opening Night At Red Rocks

Opening night of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' Summer 2010 tour! The band certainly did not disappoint the sold-out crowd at the majestic Red Rocks Amphitheatre outside of Denver, CO.

Joe Cocker began the festivities with a breezy and inspired set of hits including "Unchain My Heart," "With a Little Help from My Friends," "Feelin' Alright" and a cover of The Beatles' "Come Together," which he recorded for 2007's Hymn for My Soul.

The excitement and anticipation at Red Rocks was undeniable as the Heartbreakers struck the first notes of tonight's opener, "Kings Highway," off Into The Great Wide Open. The guys tore through classics "Mary Jane's Last Dance" and "Breakdown" before surprising fans with a blazing version of the rare "Driving Down to Georgia" off the recently released The Live Anthology. Scott's wicked harmonica riff helped kick start "Jefferson Jericho Blues," which began a string of songs from Mojo, due out June 15. The capacity crowd was treated to live debuts of "First Flash of Freedom," "Running Man's Bible," "I Should Have Known It," and "Good Enough," all of which promise to be strong staples on this summer's tour. Wrapping up the set with "Refugee," Tom and the Heartbreakers returned to the stage and treated the audience to an intense triple-encore of "You Wreck Me," "Mystic Eyes," and the finale "Runnin' Down a Dream."

Check out the photos from last night and stay tuned for updates, photos, and more from every night of the tour. It's going to be a fun summer!

The Making of "Mojo"

"Mojo is power. You've got your mojo working. Things are happening for you." - Tom Petty

"Mojo means the magic, the thing that gets girls excited." - Scott Thurston

The first studio offering from Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers in eight years, "MOJO," finds the legendary band firing away on all cylinders. Instead of hunkering down in a sterile recording studio going over every drum track, guitar solo and vocal nuance with a fine-tooth comb, the group set up shop in its cozy practice space (dubbed "The Clubhouse") to cut the record live, thus resulting in a complete overhaul of its creative process.

Flanked by tiers of guitars and photographs of influences and old friends such as George Harrison, Petty and his longtime compadres (Mike Campbell on guitar, Benmont Trench on keyboards, Ron Blair on bass, Scott Thurston on harmonica and guitar and Steve Ferrone on drums) played face-to-face with the tape rolling to capture the raw energy so familiar to anyone who's ever seen the band in concert. "We haven't done a live record - like a proper live record where the whole band plays together at the same time and we really wanted to do that," Campbell reveals. In between the real work, the band filled time by slinging back beers and riffing on old blues standards like a regular neighborhood garage band - albeit a multi-platinum-selling garage band.

The space the Heartbreakers inhabit on "MOJO" lies somewhere between the British blues of John Mayall and the Southern sensibility of Jimmy Reed with Petty's keen knack for tapping into universal themes of love - both disillusioned and hard won - and desire rounding out the album's 12 tracks. "I wanted to show other people what I hear with the band. This is really where the band kind of lives when it's playing for itself," Petty explains.

As the natural ringleader, Petty challenged the band by refraining from completing demos of the songs prior to pushing the record button in an effort to let things happen organically. By entering the recording process with just lyrics and sketches of chords, Petty allowed the Heartbreakers to explore the boundaries of the songs and transform the seedlings of his original ideas into full-fledged show stoppers.

"Just getting a good song is pretty exciting, because to me the song isn't verifiable until I get into the studio and play it with them and make a good record," Petty claims. "Then it's verified to me. Until then, I'm not sure. It might just be me who likes it."

The rollicking snarl of "I Should Have Known It" and the rough-and-tumble swagger of "Jefferson Jericho Blues" both bear the familiar Heartbreakers stamp, but manage to defy the old, tired warhorse status of so many other artists who share Petty and co.'s longevity.

"You used to have a situation where you'd had a big hit and you had to come up with another one all the time. I don't feel that anymore. I feel more pressure to have something that feels pure to me," Petty says.

With "MOJO" Petty succeeds at following his own principle of presenting the public with a collection of songs that pleases the group as a whole. "I feel like, you know, 10 years from now I can play this and not grimace," Petty states without hesitation.

Live review: Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Joe Cocker @ Red Rocks Amphitheatre
By Candace Horgan and Mark Osler

Watching Tom Petty perform on the opening night of his 2010 tour at Red Rocks with longtime band the Heartbreakers, it struck me that there is something ageless about him.

Sporting a duster and playing Rickenbacker guitars most of the night, he didn’t look much different than when he released his first album in 1976.

Petty’s show Tuesday night was long on hits and material from his latest CD, “Mojo.” Fans reveled in track after track of golden material. In fact, does Petty ever write a bad song? Some may be better than others, but it’s rare to hear a true clunker come out of his oeuvre.

Petty and the Heartbreakers showed a little rust on the opening “King’s Highway.” The mix, in particular, seemed muddy, but cleared up by the fourth song, a gorgeous “Free Fallin’” that Petty dedicated “to all the lovebirds, and to any guy who has cheated on his girlfriend.”

Tuesday’s show had an interesting pace to it. Petty seemed to break it into blocks. After the opener, he did a series of songs from his “solo” albums, including a great “You Don’t Know How it Feels,” with a long, moody jam. Many people in the audience seemed to take the lyrics, “Let’s roll another joint” literally, as I felt like I might get a contact high.

The next block showcased some classics, including “Breakdown,” which Petty and cohorts have always jammed on. This version had Petty sing-speaking a lengthy, moody ending over a solo by lead guitarist Mike Campbell. A raring “Drivin’ Down to Georgia” featured some great piano work from Benmont Tench and a lyrical solo by Petty on a Fender Telecaster.

The third block consisted of songs from “Mojo,” and the new songs are quite a departure from some of Petty’s earlier work. “First Flash of Freedom” sounds like “At Fillmore East”-era Allman Brothers, particularly with guitarists Campbell and Scott Thurston playing stereo guitar solos, the former on a Gibson Les Paul and the latter on a Gibson SG. It was actually sort of freaky how much it sounded like something that Duane Allman and Dickey Betts would come up with. The Allman Brothers love continued on “Good Enough,” while Campbell channeled his inner Jimmy Page on “I Should Have Known It.”

The final block returned to the familiar hits, including an acoustic “Learning to Fly” and trippy, searing versions of “Don’t Come Around Here No More” and “Refugee.” The multi-song encore included a fiery “You Wreck Me.”

Joe Cocker opened the show with a long, hit-filled set. It’s sometimes easy to forget how much Cocker has contributed to rock over the years, but hearing “Feelin’ Alright,” “The Letter,” “You Can Leave Your Hat On,” and the always welcome “With a Little Help from My Friends,” was a good reminder. Cocker’s voice still has its trademark emotive growl, but the volume levels left a lot to be desired. In 27 years of attending concerts, it might be the first time I wished the performer had been turned up so we could feel the impact of the music.

Billboard CD reviews: Tom Petty

ARTIST: TOM PETTY & THE HEARTBREAKERS

ALBUM: MOJO

NEW YORK (Billboard) - Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers have always been a rock 'n' roll band. But "Mojo," a mostly blues-rock opus clocking in at nearly 65 minutes, is for those who've been waiting for the long-lived group to let the throttle out all the way. Petty and lead guitarist Mike Campbell don't restrain themselves with these arrangements, ranging from the tasteful licks of "Jefferson Jericho Blues" (about founding father Thomas Jefferson's plantation proclivities) to screaming solos on "I Should Have Known It" and the album-closing "Good Enough." Benmont Tench gets his own piano and organ spotlights on such tracks as "Running Man's Bible" and the swirling "Something Good Coming," while Petty and company cut a wide swath through Delta blues ("Takin' My Time"), reggae (the pro-pot "Don't Pull Me Over"), garage rock ("Candy") and nods to soul ("No Reason to Cry") and folk ("Something Good Coming"). It's not news that these guys rock, but on their first new album in eight years the Heartbreakers have their "Mojo" working like they never have before -- which is a fine thing indeed.

Review: Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers are `all right' in Oakland
By Jim Harrington
Oakland Tribune

Posted: 06/06/2010 03:36:24 AM PDT
Updated: 06/06/2010 05:41:58 PM PDT

Halfway through the encore of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' concert on Saturday at Oracle Arena, the 59-year-old bandleader closed his eyes and spoke to the crowd mid-song.

"I thought to myself," he uttered during the group's oft-played cover of Van Morrison's "Mystic Eyes," "wouldn't it be great if, for just one moment, everything was all right."

Petty has made a career out of providing those kinds of moments for his fans.

Those moments tend to last three to four minutes and have names like "American Girl," "Listen to Her Heart" and "I Need to Know." They regularly triumph over his listeners' worldly cares and, indeed, make everything temporarily feel all right.

Petty and his Gainesville, Fla crew — which consists of superman guitarist Mike Campbell, keyboardist Benmont Tench, bassist Ron Blair, multi-instrumentalist Scott Thurston and drummer Steve Ferrone — delivered plenty of those instances during what was a huge night for the band, and its fans, in Oakland.

For one thing, it was an early outing (only the third show) in the Heartbreakers' 2010 tour, which is currently scheduled to run into early October. Even more significant, however, was that the band was debuting material from a brand new album, "Mojo," Petty's first with the Heartbreakers since 2002's disappointing "The Last DJ." ("Mojo" is due in stores June 15.)

Those two reasons — along with the usual ones, such as, most notably, Petty's track record as a reliably entertaining concert act — were enough to draw a capacity crowd to Oakland. They also helped generate a sizable amount of media coverage, which included reviewers from Spin and Rolling Stone magazines.

As expected, Petty did not disappoint when he stuck to the fan favorites. Classics like "I Won't Back Down," "Free Fallin'" and "Mary Jane's Last Dance," all of which came early in the two-hour set, certainly haven't lost their power over the years. On the flip side, though, was the new material.

The Heartbreakers performed five tracks from "Mojo" and each one was painfully mediocre. Yet, it must be said, that they failed to impress in a variety of ways. "First Flash of Freedom," for instance, was run-of-the-mill psychedelic rock, while "Running Man's Bible" was a monotonous slow blues number with a somewhat entertaining guitar lead tacked on at the end. The trying quintet of tunes ended with "Good Enough," which simply wasn't.

With those five numbers out of the way, Petty and his men were able to turn their attention toward the songs the crowd had paid its money to hear. The last third of the concert was particularly inspiring as the group raced through killer versions of "Refugee," "Runnin' Down a Dream" and "American Girl," all of which benefitted from Petty's solid vocal work and Campbell's tasty leads.

Those that got to the show on time were treated to an opening set by rock legend Joe Cocker, who turned in a performance that was at least the equal as what came in the nightcap. The 66-year-old Englander was feisty and in tremendous voice as he punched his way through such all-time greats as "Feeling Alright," "The Letter" and, of course, "With a Little Help from My Friends."

Great Show, Amazing Picture
That's my little GIRL!! The show was awesome, & what a GREAT surprise seeing my little girls picture as the opener for the Oakland show review!! Thank you Tom Petty & crew!!

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers hit Northern California Saturday night, delivering a thrilling set to a sold out standing-room-only audience at Oracle Arena in Oakland.

Joe Cocker and his exceptional eight-piece band continue to impress, complementing the Heartbreakers’ hard-charging rock set with a mix of soulful selections from their legendary frontman’s celebrated career.

Clocking in at more than two hours, Tom and the band’s set drew from across their catalog, including “I Won’t Back Down,” “Learning to Fly” and “Don’t Come Around Here No More.” Songs from Mojo, the new album out later this month, continue to evolve as the band hones the live interpretation of their most recent studio masterpiece. While Mike Campbell’s guitar playing is at the forefront of these blues-based gems, it’s the nuanced interplay between the entire group that ultimately shapes how these songs come alive.

Oakland was the first indoor concert of the tour and so tonight was also the debut of the band’s full light and stage production. Laser lights enhance the etherealness of “First Flash of Freedom,” a new song off Mojo penned by Petty and Campbell. Six enormous flat screens above the stage give the crowd an up-close view of the band normally afforded only to those in the first few rows.

With three shows in the books, the 2010 Mojo summer tour is off to a fast and exciting start. Check back often at TomPetty.com for tour updates including photos, show recaps and more!

Майк считает,что блюзовое звучание Mojo,было достигнуто в большой степени благодаря его гитаре sunburst '59 Les Paul,она их даже вдохновила на такой стиль нового альбома.

Guitar inspires Petty's Mojo

Tom Petty got his Mojo working with Mike Campbell's guitar.

The Heartbreakers' new blues-based album was inspired by the sound of Campbell's recently acquired sunburst '59 Les Paul, says Petty's longtime lead guitarist and musical foil.

"I got a new guitar which is actually an old guitar," the 60-year-old picker says from his Southern California home. "It's the classic Jimmy Page, Peter Green, Eric Clapton-era guitar. There were only 500 or 600 of them made that year. There's just something about the harmonic overtones in it when I picked it up and plugged it in, it immediately had that classic British blues sound. It was kind of eerie.

"And Tom had been listening to a lot of blues on our break. So when he heard that guitar, he said, ‘Why don't we build an album around that guitar?' It kinda came from that. It was a combination of Tom wanting to explore that aspect of our influence and wanting to feature this guitar."

And what Petty wants, Petty gets. The 15-song throwback Mojo, in stores June 15, is knee-deep in the blues, with licks and grooves reminiscent of everyone from Muddy Waters to the Allmans to Jeff Beck and with Campbell's tasteful playing and Les Paul in every song.

Recorded live in the studio in old-school fashion, it's the band's first CD since 2002's The Last DJ, and their most vibrant work in much longer.

En route to The Heartbreakers' Canadian tour-opener June 8 in Vancouver, Campbell talked about the blues, Petty's beard and his old-new guitar. Here are the highlights:

This album feels like a travelogue. You've got British blues, but also the sounds of Chicago, the Delta, Texas, Memphis. Were you trying to check all those boxes?

The influences were just instinctual. There wasn't any conscious effort, aside from wanting to put the guitar up front and do it live. And of course, we wanted to have really good songs, not just have a bunch of jamming. Tom worked really hard to write good songs. Growing up in Florida, we listened to a lot of blues, Muddy Waters, Howling Wolf, Jimmy Reed, Lightnin' Hopkins. And that's still the stuff we listen to when we're on break. And then there's the influence of the British stuff. So this is just a hybrid of all the things we've been influenced by.

Were there specific songs or artists you were trying to honour?

Not really. I know Jeff Beck's name came up. But only in the sense of saying, ÔLet's make it sound like a Jeff Beck record, where the guitar is really loud and the band is behind that.' Which we'd never really done. The only other criteria we had was we didn't want to do overdubs. So it was all live off the floor all the solos and most of the vocals. We played without headphones, except for Tom, he had a little earplug so he could hear his vocal. But we were all in the same room, and we just played together. I think that's the beauty of the record, everyone's in the room, everyone's listening, there's no polish. It was, 'We're going to play this top to bottom, and the solo better be good, because if I screw up we've gotta play the whole song again.' And that's really a fun way to do it; it's like playing a gig. You count it off and you go for it. You just have to know in the back of your mind that there's no punching in, no fixing. It steps everybody's game up quite a bit. Everybody focuses more and listens and makes more of a performance out of it.

What's your relationship like with Tom after all these years?

That's interesting. We've gone through a lot of ups and downs over the decades, but we're really close right now. We really have a love for each other and a respect. And we still love working together. I feel like he's my brother. We're so close you can't put a word on it really.

I've read you've never had much interest in making a solo album.

Well, I do. But not while I'm in this band. I was working toward it for a while, and then I thought, 'Why do I want to compete with myself?' The Heartbreakers is my life and I love it. I wouldn't want to do anything to conflict with that. So my attitude is, I'm going to work with The Heartbreakers as long as we can. If that ever does dissolve, then I'll take it seriously. And I have a little side band called The Dirty Knobs I play with locally. I can try out tunes, and some ideas eventually find their way onto a Heartbreakers record. We have a lot of fun. There's no pressure. It keeps me out of trouble. And it's nice to be the boss every now and then.

Is Tom a stern taskmaster?

Stern? He's got a very powerful opinion, and he's usually right. But he's a great boss, a great leader, a great force. It's like having Bob Dylan and Keith Richards in one guy. He's stern when he needs to be, but he's also democratic. And we've been together this long, so obviously it works out well.

So what do you think of his beard?

I think it looks great. Overall, he's really healthy. He had some knee issues a couple of years ago, and he fixed that. So he's in great shape. I think the beard makes him look really good. He's looking the best he has in a long time. And he's real clear, he's focused, he's excited to get out and play. That makes me happy.

Will you be bringing the Les Paul out on the road?

No way! I couldn't deal with the pressure. Gibson has made me a replica that's almost identical. It sounds 95% as good. That's the one I'll take on tour. It's just too expensive to carry the real one around. I may play it locally when I can carry it with me. But I want to use it on the next record. I don't want to damage it out on tour.

Tom Petty Works New 'Mojo' in Oakland

By Barry Walters
Jun 07, 2010 9:31 AM EDT

In a two-hour show that combined hits, covers and an uninterrupted chunk of their upcoming Mojo album, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers once again justified nearly 34 years of popular rock classicism in Oakland on Saturday night. Every new track evoked different early '70s sounds that predate the Heartbreakers' own formation, and most of their enduring FM staples rework styles that stretch back even further. But Petty and cohorts performed with both precision and commitment — a rare combination for a band of vets with a median age nearing 60.

Although he'll hit that milestone this fall, Petty certainly didn't look or sound his age. Like his Heatbreakers, he was dressed primarily in black, which in his case included a velvet suit with fat silver buttons that flanked his shins. Aside from his Grand Ole Opry-inspired fashion sense and the occasional shake of his thick hair mop, Petty remains a low-key entertainer. His sole concession to arena-rock showmanship was in leading a few call-and-response chants that nearly contradicted his lyrical content: A cheery string of "ohh-ohh-ohh"s broke the otherwise sulky mood of his 1985 MTV smash "Don't Come Around Here No More," yet the response that echoed through Oakland's nearly 20,000-capacity Oracle Arena proved his fans didn't mind the occasional mixed message.

From the chugging rhythms of set opener "Kings Highway" to a final encore of their Byrds-y early hit "American Girl," the Heatbreakers maintained an authoritative roar, and the Bay Area audience paid them back with equal enthusiasm. "That you're still here tonight means so much to me," he told them after "Good Enough," a moody Mojo track that evoked Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here" during the verses and the climax from the Beatles' "I Want You (She's So Heavy)" during its thunderous instrumental coda.

The evening's first new song, "Jefferson Jericho Blues," suggested the Allman Brothers' layered guitar leads, while the current radio cut, ""I Should Have Known It," hammered out heavy Led Zeppelin-esque riffs. Covers of Fleetwood Mac's early hit "Oh Well" and "Mystic Eyes," Van Morrison and Them's follow-up to "Gloria," further acknowledged the band's ties to rock's past.

The most satisfying songs of the evening came from the Gainesville, Florida-born rocker's own back catalog. Balancing and bracketing the five-song string of soon-to-be-released album tracks was a cross section of singes from Petty's first 13 years of hits. The Heartbreakers' very first one, "Breakdown," provoked a particularly enthusiastic response: "Come a little closer to me, babe," Petty drawled to the very vocal delight of his female fans. "Why don't you go ahead and give it to me?" he continued, and the women screamed louder. It takes a special kind of talent to make a song about acute depressive disorder seem sexy, and Petty's still got it.

Set list:
"Kings Highway"
"Listen to Her Heart"
"I Won't Back Down"
"Free Fallin' "
"Oh Well"
"Mary Jane's Last Dance"
"Drivin' Down to Georgia"
"Breakdown"
"Jefferson Jericho Blues"
"First Flash of Freedom"
"Running Man's Bible"
"I Should Have Known It"
"Good Enough"
"Learning to Fly"
"Don't Come Around Here No More"
"Refugee"
Encore:
"Runnin' Down a Dream"
"Mystic Eyes"
"American Girl"

Review: Critic won’t back down from praise of Petty

There aren’t that many bands like Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers playing arenas any more.

The Florida sextet’s mastery of no-frills rock ’n’ roll is in short supply in these days of Auto-Tuning, lip-synching and “helping” backing tracks.
And, let me tell you, it sounds awesome.
With a simple lighting rig, some projection screens around the front of the stage and a sound mix that didn’t hide any mistakes, the band got greasy from the get-go.
Opening with “King’s Road”, the gang got down to jammin’ the grooves with a slinky version of “You Don’t Know How It Feels” that showcased its ability to play just the right notes and never any more than that. The aroma of homegrown was everywhere.
Then “I Won’t Back Down” started the singalong — at least the first one of the night. Guitarist Mike Campbell wasn’t kidding when he said that the set was hit-laden. This band has nearly 40 years of them to choose from.
Earlier, I’d been ad watching. It’s always intriguing to study the demographically targeted advertising that precedes a concert.
For Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, it was Steve Nash fitness centres, customizing your diabetes monitors, legal counsel and Air Canada. So, his fans like to travel, stay fit and do drugs to keep themselves rocking with customized tech while occasionally requiring advocacy.
Hmmm, exactly the same at most 20-something club shows, with some tweaks.
The fitness would be the condom ads, the pharmaceuticals something for being able to function at work the next day and travel — universal. Law firms, guess we all need those. Maybe where the don’t drink and drive PSAs come in?
Whatever the target market, once the guys got rocking, all ages were getting a treat.
Loved the response to song No. 4. Who wouldn’t when it’s “Freefallin’”?
It was surprising to hear a group with the kind of catalogue this one has pull out the old Peter Green-era Fleetwood Mac ditty “Oh Well.” Petty seemed to be having a ball with his dual maracas and Campbell got to showcase that sunburst ’59 Gibson Les Paul that so much of the new album Mojo is prefaced upon. The axe’s attack is fierce.
“Mary Jane’s Last Dance” tore it up next. Never noticed how indebted that tune is to Neil Young before. Petty ripped out some fierce leads on this track. He’s no slouch, either.
Heck, every time anyone solo’d they were spot-on. Particularly the band’s “secret weapon,” keyboardist Benmont Tench, whose work in familiar hits and lesser known rockers such as the triumphant “Driving Back to Georgia” was aces. If you came for pyrotechnics and posing, you were at the wrong gig. If you came to hear one of the few bands that came after the rock heyday of the late ’60s and early ’70s who can hold its own against any Beatles, Stones, Dylan, Zeppelin, what-have-you, GM Place was the place to be.
Woodstock-era legend Joe Cocker opened the night. While I only heard a snippet of the last tune, someone seated next to me said it was a “passable trip down memory lane.” Can’t say, as it’s before my recall, but always loved Cocker’s UK soul stylings on songs by the Beatles and Buffy Ste. Marie. An interesting opening act, but one that appeared to grab the audience.

Tom Petty: Something Good Coming

By: Dennis Cook

Gris-gris, jack ball, hoodoo bag – all different names for the same thing, a totem that signifies rejuvenation, root energy, life force. When one's mojo is workin' they hum from the inside out and their actions strike like a marksman's arrow, sharp and true. So, it's fitting that the latest long-player by Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers is dubbed Mojo (arriving June 15 on Reprise/WEA). Despite 35 years and counting on the ramparts, this band sounds like they scored a swell new mojo bag, coming on as fired up and ready to wave rock's banner as they did back in 1976. Mojo feels engaged on every level, the unadulterated of a rock band making rock music.

"That's exactly what it was. We had a terrific time doing it. I don't think we could have had more fun," says Petty. "We recorded it live-in-the-studio. We did a few overdubs, not a lot, and the rule was to try and not do any. We like it and feel really good about it."

Mojo is the first studio Petty and the Heartbreakers studio release since 2002's The Last DJ and the first time recording together again after the 2008 self-titled Mudcrutch record, where Petty and Heartbreakers Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench reformed their pre-Heartbreakers band. That record was similarly cut with a live approach and influenced Mojo's general feel.

"I think the Mudcrutch record turned a lot of things around for me in terms of how I approach recording. That was such a pleasurable thing. It was a record that we made that I actually like to go back and listen to [laughs]. I don't normally do that; I'm usually fed up with it by the time I'm done with it. [Afterwards], I thought, 'Why would I do it any other way?' and let's see how it works on the Heartbreakers," explains Petty. "With the Heartbreakers, we hadn't made a record in so long I really wanted it to be really good."

The new record has a darker hue in places than some chapters in the Petty catalogue, with a thick, present sound and lyrics so sharp they draw blood. A bit of Mudcrutch's psychedelic bent also finds its way into the proceedings, particularly on standout "First Flash of Freedom."

"The takes were usually very early takes, and I wanted to leave room for improvisation. We didn't really demo this up. I just came in with my guitar, played them a song on it and took it from there," says Petty. "So, everyone had a lot to contribute. I guess 'organic' is an overused word but it is pretty organic because it was created right there on the studio floor. We didn't polish it up. We just took it as it was. The groove was the important thing. I wanted everything to have a deep pocket, and I think we succeeded pretty much on that level."

In 2010, rock has largely lost its hips, ceded the dance floor to urban soul and mainstream pop and country, forgetting its early primary purpose of getting folks to sway and grind together to the beat. Thankfully, masters like Petty and his running partners haven't lost the script.

"Swing is the key word. The swing has kind of gone away, and it's become a little stiff to me. I really admire what Booker T & The MGs do, that sort of groove. JJ Cale has a great groove, too," offers Petty. "This is what the band has grown into [laughs]. This accurately reflects what we've turned into. We've got a lot deeper pocket than we used to. In the early '80s I don't think we would have or could have made this record."

Even Rock Stars Get The Blues

There's a blues undercurrent to the album, from the title to opener "Jefferson Jericho Blues" to something more indefinable and haunted in the shadows. If anything, Mojo hews close to the blazing blues-rock of early Fleetwood Mac.

"I love Peter Green! He's one of my idols. I could listen to Peter Green all day. And that's very much what I had in mind on a lot of the [new] stuff. I wanted to get a sound that mixed up say the Chicago Chess stuff and John Mayall, Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac, early Jeff Beck Group. These were records I played to the engineer a lot before we began the project," says Petty. "I told him, 'I want the guitars right up loud, as loud as the vocals when [Mike] plays,' and I think we succeeded at that. Mike's just amazing. He really stepped up and did his part."

Campbell is right out front on Mojo. It's a refreshing change of pace and perhaps a chance for folks who haven't paid close attention the past 35 years to discover just how tremendous a guitarist Mike Campbell truly is. Often he's an extremely tasteful, subtle, respectful player, working into the muscular of the music rather than riding on top.

"I tried to kinda drum that out of him [laughs]. It was like, 'Okay, let's show 'em what you can do. Just rip and have some fun.' He never let us down," enthuses Petty. "I've known Mike and Ben for so long and they still amaze me. I couldn't dream of playing with anyone else."

Tench, Campbell and Petty have played together for close to four decades, and yet their chemistry and obvious camaraderie make each new chapter feel fresh and exciting for them, which in turn sparks off fan enthusiasm in a very tangible way. Nothing compares with the force of a shared endeavor that guys put their backs into, and these three do that again & again.

"What else would I want? I've always been so satisfied with them and the position I'm in with them," Petty says. "When we came together we had very similar record collections, very similar tastes, and that's always been important to us, that our reference points are really clear. But I've always felt it was a little bit of luck that they walked into my life when they did. And I think we all respect each other and we're who each of us wants to play with."

The impression from the outside may sometimes be that this is Tom Petty's band but spend a little time talking with the man and it's clear he sees this as a full-blooded collaboration. And it always has been in his mind.

"We've never looked at it as me and a backup group. We've always treated the band as equals. Maybe I'm sort of the final stamp of approval, but I think everybody has an equal input. And it's not something we work on; it's very natural. We don't talk about it a lot, we just do it," says Petty. "I'm very grateful for whatever force of nature brought them to me."

"Mike has always understood [me]. If I have a song he'll play something better than I picture it. He'll always hand me something better than what I handed him. There's very little to say but, 'Oh yeah, that's great.' It's a great little group and I'm really glad I'm still in it."

Capturing Mojo

"We did [Mojo] at the Heartbreakers' clubhouse/rehearsal space and studio where all the gear is stored. Literally every piece of gear we've ever bought is there, and it's really handy and accessible," explains Petty. "Over the years it's morphed into more of a studio. We've built a nice control room there, but it's very casual. We'd just roll in and start to play. There's no headphones, and that changes things quite a bit to not be separated and playing in different rooms. So, we're playing with just floor monitors. We can't have them up very loud but that's what we're using. It's pretty much like a rehearsal in some ways. By the time we learn a song we've got a couple of takes."

"And [engineer] Ryan Ulyate (ELO, George Harrison) has really changed my life since he came into the picture. He's very good at understanding what I want without a lot of discussion, and I can stay on the studio floor and worry about the arrangements while he worries about the control room. It's a real good tag-team we've got between he, Mike and myself. And I didn't feel the need to bring a producer in. I felt I had a clear idea of what I wanted to do."

Over the years, Petty has built up his production skills, learning better and better how to capture the sound and vision inside his head on tape.

"The great thing is when it surpasses what you had in mind! I often didn't know exactly what I had in mind; I just had it with a guitar and could sort of picture what they'd bring to it. But they always surprised me and did something better than what was in my mind. I sometimes didn't know if I had that strong a song and they'd turn around and give me something incredible, like with 'Don't Pull Me Over' [on Mojo]. I didn't even intend to show them that song. It's got a slight reggae groove to it and I thought that might rule it out. But we ran out of songs [laughs]. So, I said, 'Well, I've got this thing, but I don't know…' They came out with this fantastic groove on it. We weren't going to put it on the record but anybody who came by the studio said we should put it on the record. So, it got us all thinking it was something."

"We all didn't want to quit. I felt so in the pocket – I was coming up with songs and the band was cutting them so easily and having such a good time doing it. I think we'd still be there but we had to quit because of the [summer] tour coming up on us. It could have very easily been a double album. We still have a few tracks that didn't end up on the record because of time constraints. I just never felt so comfortable recording. I could have just kept going."

The Trip To Pirate's Cove

The lyrics on Mojo have the density and intensity only a life deeply lived could produce. But, it's largely not sing-along Petty fare, instead delving into gray areas and culling memorable but not necessarily bright moments from Petty's long road. One number that slithers with a grimy, realistic underbelly is slow burn "The Trip To Pirate's Cove."

"I think it's probably got some reality base [laughs]. That was a really particular one where I really liked the story so much and Ryan and I talked about it a lot. We really liked the story but when we started to do the song I had a whole different set of music to it. It was much quicker, a faster tempo, and it just wouldn't play," recalls Petty. "It was one of the only difficult ones, and I rewrote it three times and came in with different ideas that we'd try. We got a little discouraged and thought we might have to throw it away. But it was too good a story, so we felt we had to find the right groove for it. We finally found the music that we used, and I was really relieved. Now I can't imagine it any other way."

The track has the quality of Santa Cruz, California on a stormy day after the tourists and college students have left and only the locals move through quiet, windblown streets. Petty says, "That's what I kept thinking – that we had to find something that captured the feel of the story. It just took a while to find the feel and the groove and the melody."

One of the first shows on the brief 2008 West Coast Mudcrutch tour was in Santa Cruz, and it drew in a colorful bunch of bikers, aging hippies, curious roots rockers and Gainesville expatriates [see the original JamBase review here]. It was a marvelous affirmation of rock's power over some folk's lives, not the least of which the five guys up on stage.

"That was the second show we played, and we were just elated by it. That was such a fun little tour. I wish it could have gone on & on. We were just so happy to be back together. They were all staying at my house, and we were all just having such a great time," says Petty, who confirms the impression that what one heard inside the Santa Cruz Civic was the sound of guys rediscovering why they'd picked up instruments in the first place. "Yes, very much so. There was no other agenda other than to enjoy ourselves and play that music. It really did feel like the old days having those guys all together. Everything we played, all the covers, were things we used to play. It was really nostalgic for us. And Tom Leadon and Mike have such a cool guitar thing going together."

Bringing The New Into The Old

The tunes on Mojo seem readymade for the road and likely to thrive once they've had some time to breathe in front of a fired up crowd.

"I didn't ever use more than six pieces. The idea was to keep it down to combo size, and I didn't really go for any major production. I just wanted to get a nice sound on the band and let them play," says Petty. "When we've been rehearsing the new stuff has been very strong, very powerful, maybe more powerful than the record."

Tom Petty and The Hearbreakers began their new tour last week. The challenge with any band that's been around this long and had as many hits as these guys is how to integrate the new material into the existing body of work in a live context, where, face it, many fans pony up the bucks to hear "American Girl" and "Free Fallin'" rather than what's happening today. It's part of the American tendency towards major brand loyalty and fear of the non-familiar that creates a challenge to Petty in balancing audience expectations with artistic needs.

"It's something we've really been talking about a lot lately. You really do walk a thin line when you've got this big a catalog. We can do shows where people sing the entire show, and when we interrupt their sing-along they tend to get testy. But I think it's time we really focus on the new stuff, and we'll give them enough of the old stuff. Okay, I'll give you what you came to hear, but I think it's important that we keep this a contemporary trip or we're gonna start to feel like this is some kind of oldie-goldie thing, which it isn't," states Petty. "I love the old stuff but I think this tour you're gonna hear a lot of the new stuff. And if you don't like that then don't come."

"I really believe we're gonna be able to play a great deal of this new stuff and no one is gonna go for a beer. It's really strong in the rehearsals. And I'm just really taken with how strong it is in general," says Petty, who knocked it out with the band recently on Saturday Night Live, shaking maracas and looking hell bent for leather [see the performance below]. "I did the run-through with the guitar and I just didn't feel good with it. And I thought, 'I'm not really doing anything here,' and I wasn't even playing it till the end of the song. So, I decided to put it down and try it without it."

One can see Petty egg Campbell on in this performance, literally motioning him into the spotlight and firing him up. This is what a great bandleader does – aids and abets his players, draws out the best in them – and Petty is surely one of rock's finest bandleaders at this stage in his career.

"That's my job – to get the most out of them I can get and to keep them focused. It was just fun. It isn't really that hard."

Очередные рецензии на новый альбом,хорошие и не очень.

With 'Mojo,' Tom Petty happily sings the blues

By Edna Gundersen, USA TODAY
MALIBU, Calif. — Tom Petty's plunge into the blues left him ecstatic.

"We finally made a record worthy of the band, one that makes use of the musicianship," he says. "Every rehearsal for years started with blues. It's how we sound after hours. I thought, 'we should stay where we naturally play.' I'm more excited than I've been in a long time."

Mojo, out Tuesday (June 29 on audio Blu-ray and vinyl), is Petty's first album since 2006 solo disc Highway Companion and first with The Heartbreakers since 2002's The Last DJ. Recorded live with minimal overdubs, the 15-track set's blend of blues and melodic rock draws inspiration from the Chess Records vault and especially seminal bluesmen Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf and Little Walter, resulting in the sort of earthy alloy delivered by the Allman Brothers Band or early day Rolling Stones.

"It's very much us," says Petty, whose retro tastes are reflected in a vast collection of vintage guitars, a film noir library and an appetite for World War II history books. "I used to be a little insecure about whether I could sing the blues authentically. I can do my version of it, and this has our stamp on it. It would be an empty exercise if we weren't bringing something to the party."

He's spending this afternoon at his knotty-pine beach house, not far from his main Malibu home. Dolphins frolic along a kelp bed off the coast just yards from his deck. Petty takes a drag on a slim electric cigarette, the device that helped his wife, Dana, quit smoking.

"I've cut way down," he says. "You get vapor and a shot of nicotine, nothing burning."

At 59, Petty says, mortality and health are growing concerns, as is the vitality and integrity of his career. Although long devoted to the blues, he could not have recorded Mojo in his youth or with hired hands.

"We have to be the experienced band we are today to pull off playing this with any conviction," he says. "We found a comfortable identity. I don't want to be turning flips at 60. I see rock musicians who really don't understand how old they are, and it's undignified. I find those people embarrassing."

Musical collaboration

Mojo kicks and gallops, but its maturity is undeniable in the thick blues of U.S. 41, timely immigration tale Don't Pull Me Over and Jefferson Jericho Blues, based on Thomas Jefferson's dalliance with slave Sally Hemings.

On High in the Morning, Petty's the weary voice of hard-earned wisdom: "It hurts my heart to see a young man fall."

"A lot of those great blues records are cautionary, an older man talking to a younger one," says Petty, who draws inspiration from his huge vinyl record collection, also fuel for his Sirius/XM radio show, Tom Petty's Buried Treasure.

Petty credits much of Mojo's loose, vibrant sound to a stronger collaborative effort with Heartbreakers Mike Campbell, Benmont Tench, Ron Blair, Steve Ferrone and Scott Thurston.

"In the past," he says, "I would bring them finished arrangements of everything, which they were never fond of because they felt, 'Where's my contribution?' This time I just brought a bag of songs and we guided the arrangements together. The sound was created in the room.

"We didn't worry about whether someone else would like it," says Petty, who co-produced Mojo with Campbell and Ryan Ulyate. "It was about pleasing ourselves. We couldn't wait to come back every day. Part of that is not having a stern producer there. It might have dampened things had we gotten extremely serious. It was fun. I don't think we had disagreements about anything, which is rare."

Individually and with the band, Petty has sold nearly 60 million albums since 1976, racking up such hits as Don't Do Me Like That, Refugee, Runnin' Down a Dream, I Won't Back Down, Free Fallin' and The Waiting. His sales success and steady popularity on the road and on radio don't mean he lacked fodder for the blues.

He grew up in Gainesville, Fla., with an emotionally and physically abusive father, filed for bankruptcy in 1979 after legal disputes with his label and lost his house to arson in 1987. He split in 1996 from his first wife, Jane Benyo, after 22 years of marriage and succumbed to drugs and depression.

"In my childhood, I was in such a troubled household," Petty says. "I see why I became a rock 'n' roll fanatic. Music was a safe place."

Forty years after forming Mudcrutch, the forerunner to The Heartbreakers, Petty remains fanatical about looking forward, refusing to settle for the safety of nostalgia. On his 45-date North American tour, which runs through early October, Mojo tunes make up 25% of the set list.

"We have no intention of turning into an oldies group," Petty says. "It's very lucrative, and everyone has a great time if you play hits for two hours, but I'm not done and I want people to know it."

Despite amassing three decades of hits, Petty admirably refuses to join the lucrative circuit of touring jukeboxes, says Chicago Tribune music critic Greg Kot.

"I wish more rockers of his generation would continue to make vibrant music," Kot says. "Neil Young is a good example of someone who puts out new music and stands behind it. As a fan, I welcome the opportunity to see my heroes evolving and playing music they're excited about, rather than pandering and playing those 10 hits again and again."

Translated to the stage, Mojo will "bloom and show the band's muscle," Kot says. "It's definitely a vehicle for the band to strut its stuff and improvise. It reminds me of Bruce Springsteen's late-career appreciation of the E Street Band. This is Petty acknowledging The Heartbreakers as a great band."

Petty's shows are never less than thrilling, says Billboard touring editor Ray Waddell, who has followed his career for 25 years.

"He instinctively knows how to put together a set list with drama, surprises, his best-loved songs and obscurities, with intelligent pacing and a ton of rock muscle," Waddell says. "This guy puts on a show that every aspiring rock artist, and plenty of experienced ones, should see and learn from."

Petty isn't sweating ticket sales; early dates sold out, and he's headed to full venues at Madison Square Garden and the Hollywood Bowl. Nor is he worried much about whether fans will like Mojo.

"The challenge these days is getting people to know there is a record," he says. "We used to send a track to radio, they'd play it and alert everyone. That isn't the case now. Radio doesn't play much new rock 'n' roll."

Music's 'in their hands'

Petty is flagging fans by including an MP3 Mojo download by e-mail with every concert ticket purchased.

"It's an attempt to get the music in their hands," Petty says. "We're not giving (Mojo) away; it's built into the ticket price."

Though piracy is difficult to thwart, the solution isn't capitulating to thieves, he says. "Fans should support artists. They're not all wealthy, and they'll make better music if they have the resources. I was watching Amadeus and it struck me how musicians had royalty or aristocrats to bankroll their trip. When we started, our record company housed us, gave us a weekly salary and let us make mistakes in the studio for a year. That's over."

Annoyed that illicit file-sharing siphons profits, he's "more concerned about the devaluing of an album as a complete statement. That's all I know how to do."

He has stopped tracking the industry's shifting business models and has lower sales expectations after seeing CDs tumble the past decade. Wildflowers (1994) sold 3.1 million copies, compared with 487,000 for similarly lauded Highway Companion (2006), according to Nielsen SoundScan.

As other artists seek fresh revenue streams through commercial tie-ins, "my reaction has been to retreat," Petty says. "I don't think it's worth it to associate your song with a truck. And we don't have tour sponsors. It's tempting, because they do offer significant amounts of money, but I like the feeling that this is our band, and we own it."

Besides, he says, music isn't about money. It's an unquenchable passion. Any young wannabe weighing a decision between law school or electric guitar should head for the legal library, he says.

"If you have a choice, you won't be able to do this," he says. "It will beat you up so bad. You need that love of music in your soul or you won't survive."

Album review: Tom Petty, “Mojo,”

While his recorded output has slowed in the new millennium—he hasn’t released a studio album with his long-time band the Heartbreakers in eight years, though he did give us a strong solo disc in 2006 (“Highway Companion”) and the decades-delayed debut by his original group Mudcrutch in 2008—Tom Petty has long been on a very short list of classic-rock heroes such as Neil Young and Bob Dylan who rarely could be accused of resting on their laurels, phoning it in by issuing new product as a mere excuse to go out and rake in the cash by playing the greatest hits in the arenas one more time.

That is, unfortunately, until now.

Dominated by bluesy, stretched-out jams largely devoid of melodic hooks or engaging lyrics, “Mojo” is the laziest album of Petty’s career. He’s tried to justify the absence of heavy lifting by positioning these 15 tracks as a showcase for the Heartbreakers—whose guitarist Mike Campbell and keyboardist Benmont Tench remain two of the greatest sidemen in rock history—and saying that the group tried to record as live and in-the-moment as possible. “It’s blues-based. Some of the tunes are longer, more jammy kind of music. A couple of tracks really sound like the Allman Brothers—not the songs but the atmosphere of the band,” he told Rolling Stone.

But the sad truth is that on meandering tunes such as “Jefferson Jericho Blues,” “U.S. 41,” and “Good Enough,” Petty, who’s made a trademark of sounding disarmingly laid back, for once comes off as just bored and disengaged. This is especially disappointing given the fire of his last effort with the Heartbreakers, “The Last DJ” (2002), which unleashed a barrage of songs harshly critiquing the music industry in particular and rampant capitalism in general, including “Money Becomes King,” “Joe,” “Can’t Stop the Sun,” and, infamously, “The Last DJ,” widely perceived at the time as a take-no-prisoners assault on that monopolistic, corporate-rock radio behemoth, Clear Channel.

Now, even though Petty is making “Mojo” available as a free download for anyone who buys a ticket to his summer concert tour, he’s undertaking that jaunt with the monopolistic, newly merged concert-industry behemoth Ticketmaster/Live Nation, which splintered off from Clear Channel a few years ago, and he’s charging a top ticket price of $136.92 when he plays the United Center on June 17. (That is, unless you opt for the special “Mojo Package” priced at $300 per person—and Ticketmaster doesn’t even explain what perks you get for that absurd amount.)

Famously a champion of treating his fans well and battling for lower album prices, it certainly seems as if Petty has given up the fight and decided to go with the new corporate flow. And maybe we could even live with that—if only his new music was as strong as the best of what he’s given us in his storied past. But these half-baked jams don’t even come close.
