Crosby, Stills & Nash Release More Tour Dates With Tom Petty

David Crosby, Stephen Stills and Graham Nash have just added another U.S. leg to their ambitious 2010 summer tour, and many of the newly added dates include Tom Petty.

First announced in March, the Crosby, Stills and Nash tour already included treks around the Western United States and Europe, and will now incorporate stops in the South and on the East Coast. The 14 additional tour dates begin August 11 at Philips Arena in Atlanta, Ga., following the band’s European performances throughout July. The tour itself opens May 21 in Sonoma, Calif.

Tom Petty will perform with Crosby, Stills and Nash at seven of the tour dates just announced — in Atlanta, Ga., Nashville, Tenn., Darien Lake, N.Y., Washington, D.C., Hartford, Conn., Toronto, Ontario, and Saratoga Springs, N.Y.

Last June, the folk rock supergroup released Demos, an album of demo versions of songs recorded between 1968 and 1971 by the band and its individual members.

40 Reasons to Be Excited About Music: New Issue of Rolling Stone

“You hear it all the time: Rock is dead,” David Fricke writes in the new issue of Rolling Stone, on sale at newsstands today. “But the current state of music is the same as it ever was: There is the good and the bad, and there is always plenty of the former, if you’re willing to seek it out.”

To prove the point, the Rolling Stone staff assembled a rundown of the 40 top reasons to be excited about music right now, starting with our cover stars, the Black Eyed Peas, a group that has perfected the art of global domination thanks to the brilliant maneuvering of philosophical leader Will.i.am. The producer/rapper/friend-of-Bono tells Chris Norris about his theory that music works in circles, not squares (the proof: the success of the 45; the failure of the 8-track), the moment he realized an electro album would be a blockbuster (see: The E.N.D.), and how it’s possible to make a whole song a chorus. “Lots of people say, ‘Black Eyed Peas shit is simple,’ and I’ll be like, ‘No, fool, it’s the most complex shit you even could fathom, that’s the reason it works everywhere around the planet,” Will.i.am says.

RS also spotlights MGMT (Number 17), who tell Vanessa Grigoriadis about rejecting fame in the wake of their blockbuster Oracular Spectacular and returning to their real psychedelic roots for their new disc Congratulations. Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser also open up about their unique dynamic and their personal struggles after their first disc blew up big: “We needed to figure out how to exist in the real world, but we had no idea how to do it,” Goldwasser says. “To have a record deal come along — well, we pretty much convinced ourselves that aliens had done it.” Stay tuned for bonus Q&A, only at RollingStone.com.

The countdown also includes supergroup Them Crooked Vultures, Chuck Berry’s incredible monthly residency in St. Louis, the returns of the Strokes and T.I., the rise of ridiculously cool gear (like the micro music player), Dr. Luke’s awesomely trashy radio hits, badass country singer Jamey Johnson and U2’s epic stadium tour. Plus, RS spotlights female pop divas who are ruling the charts from Rihanna and Katy Perry to Miley Cyrus and Lady Gaga.

No. 23 - Rock's Most Tasteful Guitar Player Is Finally Letting Loose

The Heartbreakers' Mike Campbell has always been a strange breed of guitar hero: He's reluctant to engage much in the way of heroics, preferring to deliver taut, perfect melodic bursts like the four-bar solo that introduces "Refugee." "He's such a great player," says Tom Petty. "His problem is he's so tasteful and doesn't like to show off much." But on the latest Heartbreakers album, the raucous, bluesy Mojo (tentatively due in June), Petty pushed Campbell to step forward. "I think this new record has probably more guitar solos than our whole career put together," says Campbell, who nailed all his ballsy lead parts live in the studio while the rest of the band played. His secret weapon for the sessions was a 1959 Les Paul Standard Sunburst that he recently purchased with his wife's permission (there are only 1,500 of them in the world, and they sell for more than $250,000). When Campbell plugged in for new songs like the unexpectedly riff-y "I Should Have Known It," he found a thick, aggressive Peter Green-era Fleetwood Mac tone that had long eluded him.

"The guy who sold it to me said, 'A guitar like this could change your life,' and he was right," says Campbell. "I'd love to take it on the road, but I don't think I'd be able to sleep at night."

About Mojo

TOM PETTY & THE HEARTBREAKERS MOJO
Tom Petty - Vocals, Guitar
Mike Campbell - Guitar
Benmont Tench - Keyboards
Ron Blair - Bass
Scott Thurston - Harmonica, Guitar
Steve Ferrone - Drums

Some time in the last few years Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers took a left turn. Maybe it was when Petty woke up in the night with the idea of reuniting his first band, Mudcrutch, to cut the album they never got a chance to make back in the early 70s. Maybe it was when the Heartbreakers assembled the mammoth multi-disc The Live Anthology, which detailed thirty years of concerts. Maybe it was when they gave all their home movies, outtakes and live footage to director Peter Bogdanovich to create the Grammy-winning four-hour career documentary Runnin’ Down A Dream. There have been side projects and experiments since the band last went into the studio to cut a new Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers album. With MOJO, they have taken their recent freedom and experimentation to heart. They have gone off the reservation and all signs indicate they aren’t coming back.

The first thing that hits you about MOJO is that the spirit of the Mudcrutch sessions has carried on with the Heartbreakers. This is the sound of a band playing together in a room - not a studio - facing each other, all singing and playing at the same time. The music is alive, with no overdubs or studio trickery. What you hear is what they created on the spot at that time.

Tom Petty says, “With this album, I want to show other people what I hear with the band. MOJO is where the band lives when it’s playing for itself.”

As for the songs, MOJO showcases a wide variety of American music from rock ‘n’ roll to country and both electric and acoustic blues. And then there are the images in Petty’s lyrics which slip in on the melodies and set up a home in your head: The barefoot girl in the high grass chewing on a stick of sugar cane, the run-in with the law that begins when a carload of buddies decide to party with the motel maids, and the hilariously audacious idea of opening an album with an electric blues rocker about Thomas Jefferson’s love affair with Sally Hemings. Petty would probably chuck a rock at anyone who called him a poet, but he sure is a southern writer of humor and sensitivity.

MOJO has juice and guts but it also has some sweet balladry for the slow dancers and even a wacked-out reggae number that is unlike anything that Heartbreakers have done before. It’s the kind of album nobody’s supposed to be able to make anymore. It got here just in time.

The album will be released on Reprise Records on June 15.

Mike Campbell e-mail interview

April 1, 2010

An interview with Mike Campbell became a reality through his birthday present guitar. It is very difficult to put our feeling into words, but we felt like we were climbing to heaven through a series of incredibly pleasant surprises. After years of maintaining a fan site, we feel that we got a present for ourselves. We wish that TP&HB fans will be excited to read this interview.

< Introduction >

Happy birthday Mike! We are so glad to hear that you LOVED the birthday present guitar.
At first, we would like to know? was the Guyatone similar to your first guitar? What were your impressions and memories to the guitar?
Thank you. It is almost identical to the one my Dad bought for me. The only difference is mine only had two pickups. Playing this one brought back a lot of memories. This is the instrument I learned to play on and used for several years performing. It sounds remarkably good compared to more expensive guitars that I now own. It is similar to a Fender Jaguar.

I. The Live Anthology
What challenges did you face when selecting the songs for “The Live Anthology”? How do you want your fans to enjoy this album?
The biggest challenge was listening to hours of performances over the 30 years to find ones that were significant; then, narrowing them down to a final set that represented the best of the band. Many of the analog recordings had to be "baked" and transferred to digital format before we could even listen to them. We found that if the vocal was really good then the band was invariably good too, so we listened to the vocal first as a focus.
What is your favorite track on "The Live Anthology"?
"Lost Without You" ... it was unrehearsed and totally spontaneous...caught a very real emotional performance.
What kind of special emotions occurred when you listened to vintage recordings for "The Live Anthology"? Did you have heartbreaking moments on tracks with Howie and/or Stan?
Hearing Howie was particularly heart-wrenching...and we were reminded how much we miss his friendship and talent. We were pleased to hear our original drummer, Stan, sounding so good on the early stuff. He was always a great source of energy and inspiration.

In general, we were surprised how good the band played in the early years. Though we have grown tremendously over the years, our early stuff holds up quite well.
I (Mayu) was personally delighted to hear the 1997 Fillmore concerts - I flew from Japan to the United States for the very first time to see your shows. I went to three shows (January 31st, February 1st and 2nd), and I remember Roger McGuinn joining the stage for the first two days. Do you have any memories about those nights?
I LOVED those shows. Very free and inspired. The band was able to get really tight playing night after night there for so long. And we were able to be free to do more covers and deep tracks. My best memory is playing there on my birthday... it was the best of all the nights and everyone played beyond the beyond.
A lot of people must have made tons of requests about selection of the songs and/or takes. What did they say? Do you have plans to release "The Live Anthology Part 2" for the tracks that barely did not made it to the album?
There are few if any "left over" tracks. We did our best to include all the best performances. so I doubt there will be a "part 2". However, We DO intend someday to put out the best of the Fillmore run as a special release..... there are so many great performances in there, that the deserve to stand on their own.
Do you plan to release particular concert(s) in its entirety as live albums? We heard that you referred to a possibility of releasing the Fillmore shows on your interview with an Italian magazine.
Yup

II. New Album / Tour
How long did the band spent on recording the new album? Was the recording process elaborate or swift?
The new album "MOJO" was done over a few months... allowing for writing time. It was recorded relatively quickly... live in our warehouse... little or no over dubs.
The band's website states "Mojo" as "the sound of a band making some of its most exhilarating music". Could you share us your further impressions of the album? What are the album's highlights?
We had a great time, because we were performing LIVE... with no headphones. So, the whole group was really listening and reacting to each other instantly. Many of the vocals and all the guitar solos were spontaneous. Two of the highlights for me were "First Flash of Freedom" and "Good Enough".... both of those songs have extended guitar sections like we have never done before, and capture the band at its best.
Does the new album contain songs composed by you (or you with Tom)?
There are three co-written songs... "First Flash of Freedom", "Good Enough", and "I Should Have Known It".
How do you feel about the upcoming summer tour? Are there special things that you do in prior to the touring?
I'm anticipating our best tour ever.... prior to the tour I will probably sleep a lot!!!
How many new songs would you want to play for the summer tour?
Many fans, including us, would love to hear new songs as well as tunes that have not been played for a while in recent shows. How are the set lists decided ? does Tom make the decision, or is it more of a democratic process? If possible, could you take our comments into considerations?
Ultimately, Tom makes the final decision on the set list... and as the singer, it's best that way... naturally we all put in our 2 cents.... (I put in five cents!! ) Tom told me that he wants to do a show with some hits at the beginning, then a large chunk of the new album in the middle, then some hits at the end... this is exactly what I would love.
Tom recently talks in his interviews about his emphasis to recordings rather than touring. Do you agree with him on this topic? If not, what would be your short- to mid-term goals for your career?
Well, recordings last forever as a piece of art... whereas a live performance is in the moment, then gone... so in many ways your legacy is the recordings you leave behind. For that reason we take great care and devotion to the recordings. I agree with him, and we both still love to play live. In many ways, playing live creates the inspiration for what you play in the studio, so both are essential.

III. Guitars
Do you remember what guitars you had used for the original Mudcrutch?
Well, for a time, the Guyatone was all I had... then later I got Gibson Firebird... then a Fender Stratocaster.
For the Mudcrutch reunion tour, you stuck to a single guitar, in particular, a blue telecaster with a string bender. What were your policies for using that guitar?
It was white, not blue... I used it exclusively, as Tom suggested, it would give the album an identity. Also, it was the only guitar I had with a "string bender" which gives a bit of a steel guitar sound.
Your 12-string Rickenbacker guitars apparently have high octave strings below the original octave strings. This configuration is different from the original ? do you remember when you had started this, and for what reason?
It's simply the way it was when I bought it. I didn't know any difference really. Later on I realized it, and now have another one strung the other way for a slightly different ring.
How did Duesenberg bring your custom guitar offer for you? How did you feel about it, and what were your requests for the guitar?
Nathan from Duesenburg brought the guitar to a gig, and I liked it the way it was, so I did the endorsement with him. I like the guitar, and I am proud when I see other artists using it.
Are you interested in having other guitar brands make your guitars? For example, Fender Custom Shop has been very eager to restore signature guitars for various artists, such as Eric Clapton and David Gilmour. We are wondering if they would offer you to make your relic Broadcaster.
Never gave it a thought.
Is Alan "Bugs" Weidel still in charge for your guitars? He is quite famous among many fans, and some desperately wish to speak to him in person. Could you tell us more about him?
Bugs has been with us since day one. He is a one of a kind guy; very down to earth and loyal to the band. He keeps the other roadies under control.
Have you been hunting for particular guitar(s)? What makes you decide to buy a guitar ? are there certain standards for the decision?
Lately I have not been looking... I hardly have room for another guitar in my house right now, and I have pretty much all the ones I ever wanted. When I DO shop... it is for vintage from the 60s and earlier.

IV: In-depth
Tom often refers to Elvis as his childhood hero. Did you have any childhood heroes? Do you have any childhood memories of going to concerts?
Elvis would be one of mine as well.... and Johnny Cash... those were the records my Dad played around the house when I was a kid. Of course, I always focused on the guitar players (Scotty Moore and Luther Perkins). But there are so many from that time that are my heroes.... George Harrison, Keith Richards, Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page, Mike Bloomfield... it was an amazing time to be learning guitar from so many innovators.
What are your current interests, music-wise and non-music-wise? Did you have any recent records that you particularly enjoyed?
I tend to not gravitate toward new records much... I always end up listening to older stuff... J.J. Cale, Howlin’ Wolf, etc... Too much of the music today sounds the same to me.... nothing jumps out like in the 60s. I like a band called Tinariwen...... from Mali..... they are pretty cool.
Could you name five Heartbreakers tracks that are valuable to you?
American Girl
Refugee
Here Comes My Girl
Runnin’ Down a Dream
The Waiting
We have always loved not only your band performance but also your collaborations with various artists. Could you also name five sessions that you are especially proud of?
Don Henley ..... Boys of Summer and Heart of the Matter
Johnny Cash ....... the Rick Rubin recordings
Taj Mahal ........ Lovin in my Baby's Arms
Wallflowers ..... 6th Avenue Heartache
Bad religion ....... Hills of LA

Furthermore, could you tell us five guitars that have been important your career?
Fender Broadcaster
Rickenbacker 12 string
Gibson Gold Top Les Paul
Gretsch Clipper
Gibson 59 Sunburst Les Paul

V: Miscellaneous
How do you spend your time when you are not on tour or recording? Do you meet with Tom or the Heartbreakers on such occasions?
The Heartbreakers don't socialize much outside of work... occasionally we might hang out on NEW YEARS EVE. That's part of the reason we still like each other!!
I tend to write all the time and record in my home studio. I also play small venues with my band THE DIRTY KNOBS. My family is important to me and I spend my time with them.
Who decides the band’s stage outfits? If so, are there certain rules within the band for them? What are your personal fashion preferences?
We just wear what we wear... self-styled if you wanna call it that... we aren't hung up on fashion long as no one shows up in a tutu.
Many fans were surprised by your dramatic hair style change a few years ago. What was the reason for the change? How did the band members respond to you?
I assume you mean my so called "dreads"? It's no big deal... I just quit brushing my hair one year and that’s what happened... I like it because it is low maintenance.
What changes had Mudcrutch reunion brought to you, in terms of guitar playing and spirituality? Would you like to have another reunion album and/or tour?
It was great to reconnect with our old friends and make a fun record that people seem to really like... and time permitting, we would love to do another one. Playing guitar with my old band mate Tom Leadon was inspiring... we like to teach each other things.
Do you plan to expand the Dirty Knobs' activities outside of California? Do you plan to record an album? Would you be willing to tour Japan if someone offered you?
The Dirty Knobs are the world's best kept little secret!! It's a really good band and the guys are way cool... no egos and amazing players. I wouldn't feel comfortable promoting them in a big way as long as the Heartbreakers are together and working so much.... and they understand that, so we play when we can and have a great time. It gives me a great opportunity to try out new material on a live audience that sometimes finds its way into the Heartbreakers songs.
You had visit Japan twice; in 1980 and in 1986 (with Bob Dylan). Do you remember anything about the trips? What are your current impressions about the country?

I love Japan... my step mom is from Okinawa also. I remember the kindness and enthusiasm of all the fans there... and the fascinating culture. I hope we can go there again...
Could you give us messages for the long-awaited Japanese fans?
Thank you for listening... we love you all.

Petty Uses 'Electric Cigarette' Device To Quit Smoking

Rocker TOM PETTY is using desperate measures in a bid to kick his smoking habit.

The Free Fallin' hitmaker has been puffing away for much of his life and now he's determined to quit, so he has taken to using an "electric cigarette" device that he hopes will gently ween him off nicotine.

He tells Parade magazine, "It gives you a shot of nicotine and steam. I'm using these to edge off the smoking."

Petty, 59, admits age, combined with poor health in recent years has made him think seriously about his vices: "It's just part of getting older and realising you have to straighten up."

'Go After What You Love'

At 59, rocker Tom Petty still finds happiness in making music

by Ben Fong-Torres

'I have a very blessed life,” Tom Petty says. “I think any time you’re making a living at what you love to do, you’re blessed. That’s what I try to instill in my kids. Go after what you really love and find a way to make that work for you, and then you’ll be a happy person.”

On this sunny spring afternoon at his Malibu beach house, sitting yards away from the Pacific Ocean, Petty appears to be pretty happy. What he loves to do—and has been doing for more than 40 years—is make music. He and his band, the Heartbreakers, are getting ready for a major tour through 45 cities, coast to coast.

Petty and company will play songs from their first new album in eight years, Mojo, on which they dive into the blues and add a splash of reggae, along with the melodic rock that has taken them to the top of the charts time and time again. Since 1976, he and his band have been known for hits such as “Breakdown,” “Don’t Do Me Like That,” and “Free Fallin’” and for accumulating sales of more than 50 million albums. In 2002, they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Over the years, Petty has played with the greats: George Harrison, Roy Orbison, Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Stevie Nicks.

For the past five years, he has also had a weekly show, Buried Treasure, on the SIRIUS XM satellite radio network. “I play what I want to play and say what I want to say. It’s a labor of love. The feedback I get is so rewarding. I get such nice mail: people remembering things or discovering things. A teenage girl wrote me saying she’d never heard of Chuck Berry. I couldn’t believe it. It’s so rewarding to be passing that music on to people.”

A blessed life, indeed.

Petty and his wife, Dana York, to whom he’s been married since 2001, have a main residence, also in Malibu, and a third place, a “clubhouse,” where his band can rehearse and where he keeps his collection of some 140 guitars.

In front of Petty is a small bottle of Coke. His right hand twiddles with a thin brown stick.

“Got my electric cigarette here,” he says. “It gives you a shot of nicotine and steam.” The vapors substitute for smoke. “I’m using these to edge off of the smoking,” he says. “It’s just part of getting older and realizing you have to straighten up.”

Petty has reason to be thinking about his health. In October, he turns 60, and that’s all right by him. As he likes to say, “If you’re not getting older, you’re dead.”

He is not ready to slow down. “I’m really enjoying playing,” Petty says. “I think we’ll always play. The great thing about the Heartbreakers is that we seem to actually be getting better. And we’ll always give it everything we’ve got.”

Mojo is a looser, bluesier album than any of the others. “I always liked the blues, but I fell purely in love with it about 10 years ago. I started to think, ‘I should be doing that; that’s where my heart is.’”

One theme of Petty’s life and career is embodied in his 1989 hit “I Won’t Back Down.” Soon after signing his first recording contract in the mid-’70s, Petty confronted his record company over his publishing deal, saying he’d been coerced into signing away most of his songwriting royalties. He got his rights back. In 1981, the record label decided to raise album prices by a dollar. Petty would have none of it—and forced the company to retreat. “I honestly thought, as naive as it sounds, ‘Look, I don’t need the extra dollar,’” he says. “‘I’m doing fine.’ But it makes a big deal to the people buying the music.”

His outspokenness, he says, is rooted in “a rough childhood. I developed a problem with authority. Any time that authority was what I interpreted as being unjust, I stood up to it, and that became my personality.”

Tom and his younger brother, Bruce, are the sons of Earl Petty, an insurance salesman, and his wife, Katherine. The family lived in Gainesville, Fla., where his father liked to fish and hunt and would take his sons along. Tom was not interested in his dad’s hobbies or in sports. He was drawn to the arts, and especially to rock ’n’ roll. “I was just a super music fan,” he says. “The first time I tried to write was when I was 14, after I got an electric guitar. I put a song together, and it wasn’t that bad! The writing came natural to me. I thought everybody could do it.” This, he says, drove his father to anger.

“He was very abusive,” both verbally and physically, Petty says. “I had a couple of bad experiences. There was one big fight where he came in and smashed up a lot of records. But it didn’t stop me. Music was in my blood. I couldn’t quit. I never had any choice about what I was going do.”

When he let his hair grow long as a teenager, his father “called me everything in the book,” Petty recalls. “But it just made me stronger in some ways, more determined. And I think music to me, subconsciously, was a safe place.”

He and his father, who died in 1999, never reconciled. “He was a curious person,” Petty says. “As much as he hated rock ’n’ roll and the haircuts and the lifestyle, he kind of got off when we were onstage and it was going well. I remember seeing him in the back of bars here and there watching, and then saying to me later, ‘That was really good.’ One of the best days of my life was when he bought me a Gibson bass and a Fender amplifier. I was knocked out. I was 14.”

Others were more consistently supportive. His mother, Katherine, he says, “was a complete angel. She was cool. She’d give me Rolling Stones albums. My mom was always there, always great. I lost her kind of early. She had cancer, and she also had epilepsy, which was brought on by a car accident. We had to watch her fade out slowly. It was very painful.”

Katherine died in 1980. Petty’s grandmother, who had helped raise him and his brother, remained close. “She thought I was the greatest thing going. ‘You can do anything you want to do. Just do it,’ she would say.”

Inspired by bands like the Byrds, the Kinks, and the Rolling Stones, and blessed with a gift for songwriting and a voice that’s both world-weary and vulnerable, Petty didn’t take long to attain success.

But the rock ’n’ roll lifestyle would exact its toll. In the mid-’80s, Petty had a “huge wake-up call” about his drug use, and in 1996 he separated from his first wife, Jane, after 22 years of marriage. (They have two daughters, Adria, now a film producer, and Kim, an artist. He also has a stepson, Dylan, 17, from Dana’s earlier marriage.) Petty moved into what he has called a “rundown shack” in the woods of the Pacific Palisades. It served as his “bachelor pad,” he says, while he coped with the end of his marriage.

“I think there are points in everyone’s life where they’re tested, and that was certainly one of mine,” he says. “I had deep depression. I just had to find my way out of it. I had some good friends, and I had the music, and if I didn’t get myself together, I wasn’t going to be able to make it. I knew I had to make more music. I wasn’t ready to give up.”

Petty, who played small clubs for years in the ’70s, is amused by the impatience of today’s aspiring singers on American Idol. “They want to start at the top now,” he says, smiling. “I just saw music as something I was compelled to do, something that made me feel good, and I wanted to do it.”

Would he ever do a Tom Petty Rock Band video game? “If we want this music to be accepted by coming generations, it might almost be a necessity,” he admits. “But I wouldn’t want to do a commercial. A lot of younger groups want to be on commercials, but I don’t.”

Petty insists he will keep writing songs and touring until it’s no longer fun or he’s no longer creating good music. “Then I would stop instantly,” he says. “Maybe it’s part of my makeup, but I just take things as they come and go where the wind blows me musically. I just make records. That’s what I do.”

Tom Petty Web Exclusive

In this week's issue of PARADE, Ben Fong-Torres talks to rocker Tom Petty about finding happiness in making music. Plus, why he's showing no signs of slowing down. In the web exclusive below, Petty names some high points of his long, illustrious career in rock music.

The best shows aren't always the biggest.
"I've had a career that I'm so humbled by. There've been so many great moments on stage; it's hard to pick one. Sometimes it's the oddest gig; in the middle of nowhere. Some of them are small moments."

Rocking out with Muddy.
"I got to jam with Muddy Waters once. This was in 1981, and it was at a little club in Phoenix. We had played the big arena and heard Muddy was at this club, so we went straight there to hear Muddy. Someone from his camp came out and said, 'Muddy would like to see you backstage and meet all of you.' It was strange. But he'd married a girl from Gainesville, and he knew all about us. He said, 'Let's play' (on his encore)...So we were walking out to play, and I said, 'What are we gonna play, Muddy?' He said, 'Let's play some blues.' We had such a good time. We left there floating on a cloud."

Another memorable spontaneous gig.
"And I had a thing not long ago with J.J. Cale at McCabe's (a folk music club in Los Angeles). 'Come on down.' He knew Mike Campbell, our guitarist. We practiced a number, and J.J. said, 'When you come up there, stay there; don't leave.' We stayed and had this marvelous time. I left there feeling really great about things, and I think it had a lot to do with this new album (Mojo). He played with such a loose structure to everything, but it worked like crazy. So I found myself playing songs for the first time but really getting a big bang out of it. I looked at the way he structured his songs, and I took a lot of that back to my record. He plays a song once, verse and chorus, and everybody falls into it. And the rest of it is how you express yourself."

Paying homage to Dylan.
"Bob Dylan had a huge influence on us. We worked with him in 1986, backing him up, and we're just forever in his debt. He gave us a whole different way to open the music up. He gave us a lot more confidence on stage, too. Some of the things were really bold, too. We'd have to play stuff we'd just learned. He went for the feel of things; 'If this is feeling good I don't worry about dotting the i's and crossing the t's.' I saw his music very much like jazz or blues; it was very free. It made us want to be a bit bolder on stage, maybe improvise more."

A changed music man.
It had an effect on my writing, too. I wanted it to be a wider thing, where you could take it in on many levels and it would still work. Hard to explain. But we were different after we did that."

Tom Petty - Petty Considers Rock Band

Rocker TOM PETTY is considering adding his name to a new Rock Band video game - but he'll never allow his music to be used in commercials.

The I Won't Back Down hitmaker admits he's on board for fronting a new Rock Band, which enables gamers to play along with his hits.

He says, "If we want this music to be accepted by coming generations, it might be a necessity."

But Petty tells Parade magazine that doesn't mean he's about to relax his rules on using his tunes in commercials: "A lot of younger groups want to be on commercials, but I don't."
